As was said, OSX will run scripts periodically to maintain itself. I just learned about a program called Yasu that will let you run those scripts on demand

You can also do it directly from the Terminal, with the "periodic" command (for example, "sudo periodic daily"). However, I would advise just letting the system run them itself.

Once you realize that all these "cleaner" apps are mainly placebos and curb your inner cleanliness OCD you'll feel OS X being fast all the time.

I use Onyx, but I find that deleting everything, and I mean everything, manually in the Caches folder in the user library seems to speed everything up.

I wouldn't exactly recommend doing that, as it may cause problems. It technically shouldn't, since anything in that folder is supposed to be temporary, and Onyx simply deletes cache files in a similar way.

I haven't had any problems yet by doing that, but just be careful. It's the only method that actually has a visible effect for me besides clearing Internet caches.

Only Repair disk permissions like others here. Cookies and things shouldn't be deleted. Even if your mac is so slow, first search for other things than could slow your mac.

The only thing I run on my system is Scannerz once a month to verify the integrity of the drives, particularly the backup drive. Scannerz doesn't change anything or clean anything, it simply checks the drives or SSDs for emerging problems or other system problems. It's a very conservative program.

There are more than a few complaints about stuff like MacKeeper and other "cleaning" programs cleaning out stuff that either should be left alone or it will just cause the system to regenerate it.

For example, both Yosemite and Mavericks use a process called IconServicesAgent, which is taking "snapshots" for icons. The icon library is stored (at least in Mavericks) in the /var/folders system directory, and it's often gigabytes in size once created. iconServicesAgent periodically updates this. If the folders are "cleaned" as in deleted to save space or because the cleaning applications see them as junk, IconServicesAgent will kick on at about 100% CPU power and regenerate all the icon files all over again. This slows the system down and you can sit there and watch gigabytes of space disappear from your system when it's going on.

The best way to "clean" a system is delete what you know is junk on your system by yourself, like old photos or documents you don't need.

Just my opinions.

I always wait for the .2 of OS X so major networking bugs have been worked out. Then I now use the free EtreCheck to find incompatible services after an OS X major update.

Also about once every three months I run the free program Yasu since it uses builtin Terminal commands with simple check boxes to clear Internet, System cache and Font cache.

Lastly IMHO when using Migration Assistant NEVER transfer Network Settings! I say this because it seems like Apple constantly changes the Network stack with every OS X update. Transferring the stack from an older machine could mess the Network stack up during the transfer.

Did anyone mention "Yasu" yet?

Cleans caches, does cron jobs, repairs permissions, cleans logs, all in one easy-to-setup panel...
