Video. I got tired of managing storage every time I was getting ready to travel and wanted to download a bunch of movies to take with me.

The downside is with that much storage there's very little motivation to clean up Files so I have a ton of PDFs I've downloaded when researching things that aren't named sensibly and will probably never be opened again.
I bring my pdfs to pc first, rename them (sensibly), then download onto my iPad…lol. I did what you described for years before I developed a system. Cheers!

Photos. Lots of photos. Though not just for storage and viewing. A lot of photo retouching and manipulation. Keeping the working files with all the layers local until ready to archive.

I got mine so I could download photos App Library to it and keep it local.

Last night there was a problem with iCloud and I couldn't watch any of my videos in the photos cloud app on my phone or laptop.

Ta da! iPad to the rescue and I was able to watch the videos I wanted.

last night was rare as only happened once before but goes to show how vulnerable our photos are if we only trust iCloud!

I sync a lot of media to my 1TB iPad for use on planes or other poor/non-existent network areas. Also so I can keep full-size image library.

I have the 1TB model and I got it for two reasons: ability to store all my files locally without needing to download them from the cloud (which works in high bandwidth areas, but I don't have that luxury all the time) and for the 16GB of memory. I think 16GB is a practical minimum on macOS and iPadOS isn't there yet but I do think it makes a difference over 8GB in some software.

Definitely for video content. My movie collection that I ripped with Handbrake and other apps is hundreds of GBs. Tiny compared to others. In addition I have a large suite of home videos and downloaded YouTube videos that I keep locally on the device (no adult content, sorry) which adds up to another few hundred GB.

The size of my photo library is also notable, but nowhere near as large. I keep it fairly minimal in terms of what I sync to the device. Random shots are unnecessary. Only the best. I keep a decent bit of music on the iPad as well, my library is 1TB so again only the best. I also have downloaded large sections of North America locally via Google Maps since I don't have a cellular iPad and I like to view maps at a larger size. I could tether it, but no need. Not massive in size, but it all adds up.

To store my entire movie/TV show collection, it would require a 8TB iPad :). I use the 2TB to store a subset of my favorites. My iPad acts as sort of a personal media hub. I'll have something playing on it while I work at home on my MacBook Pro. The iPad also acts as a Teams meeting center and supplemental email terminal.

Itunes library and video lookup. I have a mountain of footage to sift through and I have too much to do, so while I’m working in CAD, the ipad sits on my desk playing through my footage library, and anything that jumps out at me I quick triple click to see if it works better in color or greyscale, make a note of the file, time, color & intended project on my cue sheet for later use.

As I noted in my post above, I use the iPad for TV and movies, most of it via iTunes. Which is why the death of iTunes on the Mac was the worst thing for us who used it for media management. The TV and Music apps are terrible and the Books app (for Audible books) is useless. At least on Intel Macs, you cold use Retroactive to get iTunes running. But that doesn't work anymore with Mx Macs. And it appears iTunes for Windows will be gone soon too, as there are betas for the TV app out now.

Something I didn’t realize until very recently was that Books will sync PDFs, so I drop all of my PDFs into Books and they’re available everywhere. This is particularly good for manuals. I won’t say they’re particularly well-organized, so sometimes when I open Books I’ll see some PDFs that need renaming and it distracts me for a couple of minutes.
