The main use for my 800 Mhz TiBook is to scan in documents from an older Canon scanner -- it isn't supported on Intel Macs.

I also use it to run OS 9 and play a few games.

I have two MDD G4 desktops...

One is pretty much on standby for parts just in case my original ever needs a transplant.

My original G4 (Sept '03) currently runs a good portion of my recording studio (but have recently purchased a mini and have transferred video and graphics duties to it)...with a Digi002 and PT7 running smoothly.

I do still have CS2 on it for any quick graphic updates I need to do when time's a factor and I'm already planted in my CR.

I also need it to do MiniDV transfers from my DVX100 camera, as there are currently (and I assume there never will be) no methods in FCPX to import straight from that camera.

lol

Back in the winter of 2008-2009, I kept a large room in my upstairs heated by doing video conversions on my Quad and running Folding@Home on my PS3. PowerPC space heaters FTW!

When I run my G5 overnight, the room is easily 10+ degrees warmer than the rest of the house, even in the winter (in Midwest).

I find all this talk about G5's and heat really odd.
I have a quad 2.5 G5 sitting on my desk, near my right elbow, and it's only when I reach around to the rear vents that I notice any heat, and even then it is not very much.
I also like the fact that it is so very quiet.
Guess I'm just lucky.

it's my main machine

adobe cs4
office
fcp

and basically anything those programs can do.

late 2005 dual core 2.3ghz 16gb ram 1tb sata 7200rpm boot drive geforce 6600 dual 23" cinema displays

It's pretty snappy.

It won't run a few newer programs and of course only 10.5.8 but I don't need them. I'll probably upgrade to a mac pro in a year and a half or so when prices come down some. Swap the HDD's out into the Mac Pro, keep the monitors, sell the g5 rig. But I don't see the point unless it's the 2010 Mac Pro for me and increasing the ram beyond 16gb or if I have to buy a newer edition of software such as FCP X.

I still sell people G4s, G5s and older ppc Imacs regularly, so there is definitely a market for them.

Today...

...on my PowerPC mac I downloaded five documentaries from the BBC kind souls had uploaded to youtube. I'll watch them later this week.

I watched BBC world news live on XBMC.

Watched three TED talks, also using XBMC. While XBMC 12 is not available for PPC, 11 still works fine.

Did some word processing in Office 2004.

Downloaded Auroafox 17.0.2, which has all the security backports from Firefox 18, 19, and 20 applied to it, which is very cool cause then I can still use the Quicktime plugin at will.

Used Auroafox to visit weather.gov and keep a close eye on the heat and humidity here in Phoenix. Our evaporative cooler is just keeping up with 107 degree heat due to only 8% humidity. Its 23 degrees cooler inside the house, which is still quite bearable. Much above 107 and we'll have to switch over to air conditioning. Evaporative coolers use water to cool the air, and use 10% of the electricity that an air conditioner does, in case any east of the Mississippi is wondering what the hell I am talking about. Using a swamp cooler as long as we can saves us high hundreds to low thousands of dollars a year in utility bills.

Admittedly my computing needs are fairly basic. No gaming, no heavy video editing. All this talk of PowerPC being dead or at the end of the road has me scratching my head.

My PB is still a work horse

While I might have my mac mini in my sig, after moving to Texas, I would rather be out on my back deck. I use my Powerbook to listen to music, surf the web, email, admin for my job via team viewer, ssh, etc. As well as logistics for my EvE corporation. There is something about these PPC machines..That keeps me going back to this one. :)
