For its size, the 35mm lens attached to the rx1 is amazing. I have would gladly pay 2k for the lens alone.

Really? Why is that? Is that lens really that good? I read lots of comments about just how good it is but is it really that good? - genuine question. Not trying to wind anyone up. I have the FE55 and FE35 lenses and they are VERY sharp. But they top out at £900. Is the f2 on the RX1 that much better?

I was about to ask the same question.
I have the nikkor 35mm f2D on my d610 and i would certainly not pay 2k for it.

Yes, it is that good.

There are several lenses to chose from when it comes to 35mm full frame optics. Now if we're speaking of remarkable lenses with the kind of sharpness, contrast, bokeh rendition, etc that the rx1 lens has the field gets narrower. To go even further and limit the size to the rx1s dimensions, the choices become very limited. Basically you would end up with a bunch of leica optics priced well beyond anything else out there.

interesting. I take your word for it.
Dxomark also rated this lens very high.

I'm a collector of sorts and very few lenses catch my eye like the RX1 did when I obtained one.

There is of course the fact that the lens is perfectly mated to the sensor. Any misalignment or fabrication tolerances between the body and lens is therefor out of the question.

I agree that the form factor makes it fantastic. I saw a guy with one on holiday in Portugal. Thought it was Steve Huff. Embarrassingly, I now know it wasn't. Having asked him and got the "who?" response...

I just can't bring myself to pay that much for a fixed lens, fixed focal length camera. Now in my defence that is because I haven't yet found my sweet spot of where I like to shoot. That may change in the future and I may then be prepared to pay extra for excellence in "my range".

For now I will stick to learning how to take nice pictures.

Thanks for the response Cebseb. Interesting.

The new Sony QX1 E-mount lens camera looks interesting. I can imagine having a system of lenses, sensors and screen/processors that you could put together to suite the situation. If they made it open source and allowed people to create apps for it then it could be fantastic.

Looking forward to the Zeiss Loxia 35 f/2. Though being a Biogon design, it'll have a different look then that Sonnar 35 f/2 (which is not possible to be made as an interchangeable lens due to how near the glass element has to be near the sensor)

Didn't go after all. Thought my workplace would pay for me to go, but that didn't happen. :(
