The new updates iMac should be coming June - October
1) What do you want to happen to the nextiMacs?
2) What do you think WILL happen in the next gen iMacs?
3) When do you think the iMacs will be updated

1) I want: USB 3.0 , light peak connector and blueray - however I know that it's very very very... Unlikly that this will happen.

2) I think tha the next gen iMacs will get: slighly faster processor ( i3 and i5 for the 21.5 inch and a i5 / i7 for lowest 27 inch iMac, better graphics (5xxx) and a colour consistent screen

3) after the Mac Pro / MBA gets updated, around June to October

I will probably be alone on this one but I would love future models to include a 24" 1900x1200 option. A pixel density of 94 vs 109ppi would make it much easier on the eyes and web images bigger. This is my only nit with the 27".

Oh yeah, perhaps a more ergonomic keyboard instead of a laptop keyboard for a desktop.

USB 3 and all that would be nice as well

As for when the next update will be, my guess is around Sept or Oct. The refreshes have been 11-8-11-8- month cycles.

I'd like the option for a six core i7 especially if the 970 is going to a bit cheaper than the 980X. Also anything in the 58XX series for graphics. I think USB 3.0 would be unlikely and Light Peak probably even more unlikely for 2010.

Oh, and, if they could make it so I could easily upgrade the hard drive I would not care about the above.

1) ATI 5750 or superior in 21" (Steam on Mac in May + stracraft 2 in July !)

2) ATI 5750 or superior only in 27" (too big for games)
crap Nvidia Geforce 330M in 21"

3) September

the 5750 is kinda crap compared to the 4850, so that would be a downgrade

Wishful thinking

What I would like to see in the next generation imac is what should have been built into the last generation... not that pointless SD card slot. An express card slot would have been exactly what the imac needs.

If you want an SD card reader, they have an express card for that. Want USB 3.0 when it comes out? You've got it once there's an express card adapter. ESATA? Or maybe you just want the imac to have some ports at the side and not the back. That's exactly why an express card slot makes more sense than a less useful SD adapter.

Maybe they could consider including a second hard drive in the 27 model. A 32 GB solid state drive accompanied by a 2 terabyte hard drive would be the best balance of speed and storage.

Well... yeah:p

Are we already talking about the new iMacs?

Of course we are; they're due for a refresh:p

1. Ideally what I would want would be bluray (not gonna happen due to paradigm shift), better CPU (CTO for hexacore i7-970) in 27", i5 in 21", CTO for 5850 for base and standard in top 27" (methinks they will have a 5870 2GB with six mini display ports in Mac Pro), possibly more/faster RAM (hopefully triple channel, although that's an X-58 exclusive), more HDD space and less screen issues.
2. What is likely to happen would be a better CPU, better GPU (5850 standard in top 27") and more HDD space.
3. My bet is before the end of the financial year (I'm hoping for anyway, since I can take advantage of specific tax incentives before the conclusion of this one).

Answers:

1) ATI HD 5800 series; blu-ray; usb 3.0.
2) Most likely a video card update...
3) Im hoping beginning of summer.

I said "or superior" ;) and the 5750 is not a downgrade for the 21".
I dont think we have a chance to get a 5850 in the 21" but a 5750 or 5770 is possible (cross finger).

Wow, I didn't know that you could use an express card slot as a host for USB 3.0,

but then you're spending more money - on top of the iMac, and it would be better if it has 4 USB 3.0 ports, than 1 express card slot - I might want to use my usb 3.0 and my SD card at the same time, it also saves you spending the time switching adapters. A good variety of ports would be somewhat like this (in my personal opinion)

Two Firewire 800 ports
Five USB 3.0 ports
One SD card slot
One express card slot
HDMI port
Mini DisplayPort
Ethernet
Audio in / out
DVD drive
Blue-ray Drive

... And a Backlit keyboard

Haha, 5 USB 3.0?!?!?! Most desktop motherboards have 2 and they are for enthusiasts and iMac is a consumer machine.

1. Where do I start? 2.5" SSD + 3.5" HD would be pretty awesome

2.
  • Clarkdale (i3 and i5) in 21.5" and low-end 27", same quads in high-end 27" (no faster ones from Intel available)
  • ATI 5450 in low-end 21.5", ATI 5650 in high-end 21.5" and low-end 27", ATI 5850 in high-end 27"

That's pretty much it, doubt there'll be new ports or anything like that

3. Either WWDC '10 or after BTS promo so Sep-Oct

A better GPU, but Hellhammer tells me that none exist!

There are three GPUs that are faster than 4850: ATI 4870, NVidia GTX 280M and ATI 5870. 280M is hotter than 4850 so doubt that  will use it and 4870 is only marginally better than 4850 (higher clocks). 5870 is the only card that would be a good upgrade as it's the fastest mobile GPU at the moment and TDP is about the same as 4850 has so not too hot. It's up to Apple, 5870 might be confused with desktop one if Apple releases one for Mac Pro.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Graphic-Cards.130.0.html Exclude all SLI, CrossFire and X2s, they are not official and  won't use them

Thats what I want in the next gen iMac

When the iMac does get USB 3.0, it'll probably be something like this: two USB 3.0 ports and three USB 2.0 ports. USB 3.0 ports are expensive as you have to change the motherboard (correct me if I'm wrong)

Just corrected you

Current motherboards with USB 3.0 have discrete NEC USB 3.0 controller because Intel hasn't adopted USB 3.0 so it needs another chip for it. I'm not sure are USB 3.0 ports more expensive but it could be a limitation of the controller. When Intel adopts it into their chipsets next year, I think we can see more than 2 ports, not sure though.

As you said, when it comes, we'll likely see one or two ports first along with several USB 2.0 ports and then sometime in future, only USB 3.0 (I hope for LightPeak though)

What about the looks?

I know that the iMac has a new "look" but what would you want in the next gen iMac in terms of looks?

Black keys for keyboard ( see post 12)
Backlight keyboard
scrap LG for the screen - get Samsung

Can't think of any more right now

I'd like to see new KB, but that's up to , we can only hope. The panel in iMacs is fine, the yellowing is because of the backlight, designed by Apple. Dell's 27" with exactly the same panel has been fine. As 27" use such an abnormal screen, it's VERY hard to change the manufacturer as LG is the only who makes it
