How would 32nm affect the average customer?

Currently there are no quad core 32nm CPUs. Lynnfield which is used in iMacs is 45nm. Die shrink such as 45nm->32nm gives ~10% boost and more importantly, reduces power consumption meaning that more cores and higher frequencies. It just increases performance, especially for laptops and AIOs like iMac which have limited space

Things I would like in a new Imac:

1) Blue-Ray DVD Player drive (and to be able to burn would be good to but reading and playing are essential IMHO)
2) eSATA port AND USB 3 ports
3) Wireless keypad WITH the numeric keys in their own pad (as is typical)
4) Advanced power controls in wireless magic mouse (less battery intensive)
5) Perhaps ports on the side of the screen so I do not have to fumble around or use a mirror to access and find the ports on the back of the screen.
6) Of course always better power consumption (less) when in sleep mode/standby
7) The ability to order as an option a Solid State Drive

1) Remove the removable disc drive
2) use space for better gpu cooling etc
3) have ssd option

  • Blu-ray, wake up Mr Jobs
  • 2 or more FireWire ports, there are still some of us who use these things for more than email and web surfing
  • everything faster than before, SSD drives would be necessary if we're ever going to lay iMacs down and to a Touch Mac OS

There was a fairly solid rumour for a 22" touch iMac later this year. I'd dearly love at least one model iMac running a Touch Mac OS. Touch is the future. MacBooks and iMacs will be giant tablets with an optional keyboard for serious typing.

If Apple doesn't make the leap now, Windows will wipe them out again like they did in the 1990s. Pundits are already (erroneously) claiming there's not much difference between Win 7 and Mac OS. I guess we'll find out at WWDC if there's any glimmer of a full featured Touch Mac OS.

It's Apple guys come on. I think that they would update the graphics cards a little in the higher end 27" iMacs like an ATI Radeon HD 5850 since Valve ported Steam for Macs. Other than that, they might put in a blue ray drive but that's unlikely.

ATI Mobile 5850 ain't faster than the 4850 which is currently used.... We need 5870

Why should :apple: add a Bluray drive?
They want to sell HD movies via the iTunes Store! And to be honest their quality is enough for the relatively small screens.
For the real movie feeling I have my Bluray player and my 42" plasma TV.

I want Blu-ray. I won't use it TOO often, but I just want to know that it's there. I want to know that my BRAND NEW $2000 iMac isn't obsolete.

True.... and why even add a CD drive when they are pushing digital music downloads for iPod [/SARCASM]

i would love love love to see a non glossy screen. Apple: Do photographers a favor, release your "anti-glare" screen like you did for MBP!

- SSD with TRIM function (so an update of MAC OS X):apple::apple:
- a matte screen:rolleyes:
- USB3/LIGHTPEAK/FW3200:D
- ati 5XXX:p
- HD webcam:eek:

There were some rumors stating the possibility of 32 nm quad-cores, but nothing further has materialized, either in rumors or actual products. The closest we have are 4-core 32 nm Xeons.

According to PC Watch, Intel looks to be doing the same thing with high-end desktop Sandy Bridge as they did with Bloomfield/Lynnfield. High-end desktop Sandy Bridge probably won't get a shrink, just like Bloomfield/Lynnfield (Gulftown is more of an addition), and may go straight to Haswell, but mainstream Sandy Bridge looks to have a shrink then a new microarchitecture.

...their quality is enough for the relatively small screens...

 The 21.5" is full 1080p and the monster is 2560 x 1440. Blu-ray would be a win. Not to mention large software packages that could be put on 1 BD instead of multiple DVDs.

That aside, how far off do we think USB 3.0 and FW3200 are? I'm curious about what kind of physical connectivity these things will have. Do you think Apple will include esata?

1. SSD Option
2. LIGHTPEAK and / or USB 3.0
3. Better GPU
4. Matte screen Option

Lightpeak will be available to manufacturers by the end of the year according to Intel.
Since Apple is working very close with Intel, and because Apple actually brought the concept of Light Peak to them, there's a big possibility we'll all see it in Apple products before that time.

Some say that the iMac is a consumer product.
Well, generally it is. But if it's only a consumer, non-professional product why do they have an option for 16 gigs of ram?
I know many professionals that bought the i7 model.

The bottom line is: Options are good!

Hmm, could be. Quad core Xeons aren't "real" quads as they are based on the same 6-core chip but two of the cores has been disabled. Prices of them are ridiculously high though.

There might be no need for 32nm quads atm, as Lynnfield is meant for desktops meaning that TDP isn't that big fuss. It's pretty important for high-end and mobiles as TDP does matter quite a lot, so investing on creating a quad-core 32nm chip isn't the best investment.

Hopefully SB will be on time

i am thinking since all the laptops lines updated and iPhone is expected and 4.0 we know already, high chance refreshed iMac will be introduced on WWDC

iMac, MacMini and iPhone - all on WWDC and possible preview of next OS X.

would not be surprised to see

21.5" iMac
AMD Phenom X4
ATI 5XXX Graphics

27" iMac
Intel Core i5 750 in both the models
ATI 5XXX graphics

there were some talks going on between AMD and Apple; i think AMD have a chance at desktop than a laptop ...

may be this way Apple can demand and negotiate with Intel put out the crappy intel integrated graphics away and sit talk with nVidia
