Just go buy a boxee box. I sold my ATV's when I see the boxee around my mates house. It's far superior. It's a little more money but well worth it.

then install the Bluecop Repository (google all this for the latest instructions), which has a Hulu plugin for XBMC.

can you explain how to do this? i googled it and what i keep finding is download zip file which i did and and save to a location accessible by XBMC, then Open XBMC and browse to System > Add-ons > Install from zip file but when i do that all i get are folders which are not on my computer so i can not put zip file in them. where is var/mobile ???? i see no such folder on my computer so i have nowhere to put the zip file

I'm not Degalvan, but here's how you transfer files and different repositories from your PC/Mac to your Apple TV. (Took me awhile to figure out) Some people use terminal commands, but I just find that complicated.

1. Download Filezilla for either operating system.

2. Find your Apple TV's ip address by going to settings, general, network. Make sure your computer is connected to the same Wifi network as your apple tv.

3. Open Filezilla. In the host box, put sftp://[insert apple tv ip here]. In the username box, put root, and for password, put alpine if you haven't changed it yet. Leave port empty. Then press quick connect. Now your computer is connected to your Apple TV.

4. Browse to var/mobile/media on the Apple TV system files, and then find the repository (make sure its the zip file) you want to add on your computer and drag it into the media folder that you located before.

5. On your Apple TV, go to XMBC, System, Add-ons, Install from Zip. Then find the repository that is a Zip file.

6. Done! I might of forgotten a step as I haven't done it in some time so if it doesn't work, tell me which part.

That is not needed, what i did was download the zip file to my desktop. then in xbmc under files i added desktop as source, then went into system, install from zip file and the desktop folder was there and it worked.

a problem i have noticed when watching videos throgh XBMC is that the playback is stutters often, even on non HD content, files on my system that run fine just through appletv do not through XBMC. is there some setting i am not aware of that i need to try

I'm not sure, but one possibility: XBMC will play video files natively, but it won't compress them while playing. iTunes, on the other hand, provides a compressed version that Apple TV is "built" to play. So bigger, uncompressed video files, which the ATV would not be able to play otherwise since they are not sent through iTunes, will play on the ATV via XBMC. . . it's just the ATV is not the optimal hardware to be playing such files compared to say a full computer.

That's conjecture on my part, but I too have noticed that some video files can indeed be played through XBMC without having to have iTunes running, but the playback is often stuttery and not satisfactory.

That's why I only use XBMC for Hulu. All my stored content goes through iTunes.

I see you have figured out how to do this, but just for future reference and just in case anyone else is confused:

var/mobile is in /private on the ATV. It's here:
/private/var/mobile/Media

That's where the old instructions I read said to put the bluecop zip file. But apparently you found you didn't even need to transfer it to the ATV, which is news to me! Thanks!

By the way, I wrote up a set of step-by-step instructions to go from an out-of-the-box Apple TV to a jailbroken one with Hulu-watching capability. Perhaps some people might find it useful. See here:

the media player from firecore seems to work pretty good, no stuttering so XBMC is not needed.

a new issue is the storage on my appletv is falling , i know the cache needs to be cleared. i can find the files on the appletv but how do you clear it

I didn't know how to do this, but found this post here on macrumors:

How do you clear the appletv cache?
By deleting the cache files (everything but the .plist) in /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/AppleTV/Video/LocalAndRental and /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/AppleTV/Video/Other

Which is post #16 in this thread, which is VERY relevant to this topic:
