2019 iPhone
I think we can pretty much bet this year is going to be a boring iPhone year. But it will be likely be a final iteration before another design change. And normally the last iteration tends to be the best.
Summary Below
*( 400ppi and HDR Retina display, 6.1” 2224 x 1028 @ 400PPI , leaving the old XR Res 1792 x 828 in 4.9” gives 400PPi as well. Assuming they do a smaller XR instead of a bigger one )
*( 5.5” 1570 x 882, @ 326PPI, so both iPhone E gets the same Retain PPI display, basically the Liquid Retina from XR.)
* ( For a lower price the iPad mini Cellular has 3GB Memory, I would be disappointed if Apple stick to 2GB in the lower tier )
The New Naming Scheme is basically dropping the Number, the iPhone E will probably just be called iPhone. ( That diagram was done quite some time ago )
Now before any one say 6.8” is way too big, the actual screen width, which determines how comfortable you are holding it, isn’t that much different. Even if you include 10mm Bezel, the width 82.4mm, compared to iPhone 8 Plus which is 78.1mm, i.e 4.3mm / 0.4cm difference. Remember the Bezel can be shrink in the future, with a 4mm bezel ( 2mm each side ), that gets rid of 6mm bezel, making it 76.4mm wide, even narrower than the Current Xs Max.
All three Class will now have Apple Custom GPU. All Intel Modem line up and no Qualcomm. I hope the S and R will get some Antenna Improvement as well, and I am waiting for Apple to introduce their own 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 5 W4 Chip. They have done it for their wearables, AirPods 2, I don’t see why not for iPhone, iPad and Mac, along with their own Power Management IC design previously brought from Dialog, both should be some nice cost saving.
Modem 7480 is form TSMC, so assuming Intel doesn’t want more TSMC orders, it makes sense to have 7580/7660 chip instead with capped transfer Speed, and it would be better for Carrier if they have all the 3GPP Rel14 features stays intact while just limiting the speed. ( e.g FDD- Massive MIMO support )
Storage Size
( With the introduction of iPad Mini Celluar 64GB, All iPhone could very well start at 64GB. )
I am kind of hoping they will ship an 18W USB-C to lightning PD Charger in S and R Class just to sweeten up the deal. Although I understand Apple wants the battery last longer, so not too sure if they will do it.
Just wanted to mention, the $699 iPhone R would be very similar if not better than the $999 iPhone X from two years ago
There is also an increase competition in lower end. But having an A12 in the Entry level, iPhone is faster than most of the Android Flagship in Single Core performance, even the Snapdragon 855. It will also make the iPhone much more appealing. You are getting industry leading performance for only $499. ( Of Course with other set of trade off )
What do you think of this lineup? It is pretty damn good if you ask me.
Note: This is mostly numbers crushing. Apple likes to reuse components, as it takes anywhere between 24 to 36 months to recoup their investment. And hence the 326ppi Liquid Retina, whether you like it or not It isn’t going away any time soon.
Liquid Retina HDR is a 400ppi screen. So to silence the critics of so call stupid 720P screen ( Which isn’t really 720P ) and brings back the old LCD PPI from Plus. In Reality the OLED used in Xs, excluding the green colour the other colours only has ~326ppi.
I think there is a trend that people are settling on iPhone 4.7” as the smallest size. I am not sure if Apple will ever comes out with a 4.9” Xr Edge to Edge Screen that is even smaller than iPhone 4.7’. It could be Apple tries to push the phone even bigger, and has a 6.8” Xr, it will be slightly bigger than iPhone Max. Huawei, Samsung and Xiaomi seems to find a sizeable market in the ~6.7" segment.
Personally I would love the 6.8” Xr for gaming. Other than that, I believe 2019 is going to be all about Software and Services - iOS 13 and Swift 5.
