After having re-engaged with MacOS for the first time in about 5 years, I’m convinced that adding MacOS as it currently presents itself to iPad Pro, creates a situation where it’s not a particularly great MacOS instance, and makes iPad Pro a worse device.

While the M1 SOC makes MacOS way more responsive in many ways, there are complexities to MacOS, like disc utility to restore devices that are just way more complex than on iPadOS, and for some activities, iPadOS continues to be way more efficient and “snappier.”

To eliminate the obvious UX pain points (what if you don’t want to automatically switch OS? What are the various settings permissible) and hardware pain points (more storage needed for partitions, more memory), you’ll probably get a device that is not as good as a proper Mac and a worse iPad.

The path forward is clearly better API for iPadOS and more general functionality and eventual touch displays for the Mac

Yes definitely. But its been 11 years. Progress to iOS and now iPadOS is incredibly slow when it comes to things like this. It took an entire decade to get mouse support on the iPad. I'm sure MacOS would not be anywhere near decent but its a nice stopgap to dream about while waiting another decade for what could just be better external monitor support ?
I just feel like theres a massive list of things that need working on for iPadOS and we seem to, if we are lucky, get one ticked off every 2 years. (iOS 9 - Multitasking, 11 - Files app, iPadOS 13 & 13.4 - Mouse)

This is probably the only legitimate reason I can think of for Apple not wanting to do something like this as Apple has consistently wanted to stay away from customisation and options when it comes to iOS (/iPadOS). They seem to be getting better (widgets etc) in this area but again it's still slow. At least I don't feel like I have to jailbreak these days to customise the simpliest thing, but I still remember when I needed to.

All the iPad features I want have nothing to do with the hardware. It's all about improving iPadOS. iPadOS feels like it's years behind the hardware. I still feel like I'm just using a really big iPhone when I'm using an iPad Pro.

I think having iPadOS literally turn into MacOS like that isn't quite realistic, however, I do think it's quite possible for iPadOS' UI to turn into something that more closely matches MacOS when a keyboard/mouse/monitor is plugged in. For example, I don't expect to ever be able to run MacOS apps on an iPad (even though I'd love that) but I do think it's perfectly reasonable to allow multiple windowed apps that can be moved around, resized, etc when using an external monitor.

I think it's only natural to move in this direction. If Apple really wanted the iPad to remain a touch-only device, they never would have released the Magic Keyboard and added external mouse and keyboard support. Just look at how they advertise it. They show people using the iPad like they would a laptop.

I fully agree with this and I think this is the reason why they changed the OS name to iPadOS, and why many of the widget/App Library features never appeared on the iPad in iOS 14.

They are now starting to slowly separate the 2 OS’s however slow this may be...

I am looking forward to iPadOS 15, as I think this may potentially separate the 2 OS’s quite a bit.

An iPad magnetically mounted to the Magic Keyboard with mouse and trackpad that can automatically switch into a Mac OS X environment; and then when pulled off the magnetic stand will run iOS; is a much better user experience; then having iPad OS limiting to what an overpowered device can do; and using a keyboard and mouse on iOS.

The roadmap for this and current devices is already there. Apple just has to implement it.

Magic Keyboard senses iPad is magnetically hooked up; charges device via MagSafe connection
iPad running ARM Chip
Backlight keyboard and trackpad built into Magic Keyboard
Mac OSX boots

iPad senses it's pulled off the stand; back into iOS with your Apple Pencil onto of the device that's magnetically charing

What's not to love there? Snap it into the device peripheral accessory; you have a Mac.
Pull it out - you have an iPad.

Total hybrid. Can be done. The accessories and chips are already there.
