I think Doom 2016 is the better game. Less FPS platforming for one. Might just be that I bought Eternal on Switch though. And can't be arsed to play through it again elsewhere...

Definitely one to pick up though!
For me the platforming adds to the mix in Eternal and certainly amps up the difficulty regardless of chosen level. Has a tremendous atmosphere. In some respects the campaign is like playing on line as need your wits about you to progress.

Also very into Doom 3, like the step change to survival horror and it's darker theme. Play it heavy modified with a new game engine and beautifully updated, yet very accurate graphics pack. Better still can run natively on Apple silicon thx to Mac Source Ports. Set up like this is basically a remaster...

Do you play Quake? I'm into Quake & Quake II. First game is a beautiful tangled mess, second set a standard in FPS, third a new genre, fourth more inline with Doom 3 yet equally entertaining.

I have all the Quakes but besides playing Quake 3 at LAN parties when it was a little more relevant I haven't gotten too into them I'm afraid.

Played a decent amount of Doom 3 though. I like it and it does run well on Switch. Much better than the original Xbox where I first experienced it. I'm not a big mod person TBH. Really only ever do enough to make the game work or a widescreen patch.

Into Modding mostly S.T.A.L.K.E.R. VtMB & Doom 3, others that allow me to play natively on Apple Silicon. Is easy on the PC, Mx Mac's not so much, but if there's a way, there's a will.

Played a good deal of Quake 3 in the day. These days more focused on single player. If in doubt will always go for Doom or Quake. Doom 3 Hell Barron - Macworld 2001 Preview, reworked as a Hell Knight with help from the OG creator. Is just an optional add in.

No change in play, just looks awesome in game and a nod to the past...

Focus is on the details, not changing gameplay. Is basically a remaster of the highest calibre. Both game engine & graphics pack run seamlessly on both macOS & Windows.

Still wading through Doom Eternal. Wanted to set up Quake II on the M1 MBP as already have Quake installed (enhanced edition maps on vkQuake). Yamagi Quake II source port needs to use the original game data, equally is easy enough to get the game running natively on Apple Silicon with both the official & unofficial expansions.
  • Quake II
  • The Reckoning
  • Ground Zero
  • Zaero for Quake II (unofficial expansion)
  • Juggernaut: The New Story for Quake II (unofficial expansion)
The advantage of the original game data is that you can play the two unofficial expansions that were released in 1998. The downside is that your not able to play the more recent Call of the Machine expansion.

The beauty of these older titles is that they remain ageless, are fun to play, have strong communities and if traveling with an Mx Mac you can play on battery with ease. Anyone interested in how to, you know what to do...

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora (2023)- Worthy, with the caveat you like environment of Pandora. I’m in love with it, but oddly have no place to sleep and no romantic prospects. Good lore, not too grindy, and decent combat. 🤔 See the Avatar thread for more info.

The Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena, which includes the remastered Escape from Bucher Bay.

Is cannon as Vin Diesel does the voice acting, both games are the prequels to Pitch Black (2000)

Landing pilot remains to be hot and Riddick just a bad ass. Games were produced with Vin Diesel and TBH capture the character better than the films...

CRUELTY
Absolutely not for the feint of heart, game literally warns the same. Most definitely for fans of the genre...Might just top Outlast on gore, but lacks polish, nor so deeply psychologically disturbing...

As for Outlast:
  1. Outlast
  2. Whistle Blower
  3. Outlast 2
Yet to play Outlast Trails.

FYI the link does not take you to the video you intended.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat natively on mX Mac's

Installed on my M1 MBP works as promised. Only seen one bug that if you increase the grass radius the game may crash, equally not a setting that you need to touch once set. Need play & test more but so far so good and you can work on it with mods for improved textures etc.

Feb 2025-
I’m currently jumping back and forth between World of Warships, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, and Conan Exiles currently building a bath house. WoWS gives me a taste of PVP, and AFOP includes an environment I don’t mind taking the time to explore.

IMG_3460.jpeg
Conan Exiles - you build it from scratch
  • World of Warships- Give US Your Money! I’m in it for the PVP. They try to lure you to buy stuff constantly, but you don’t have to. The most expensive free game you’ll ever play, I will say that to make somewhat timely progress, a subscription is required.
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora- I spent 2 hours last night searching for a plant that connects me to Eywa and gives a skill point. Unlike the large trees that serve the same function, these are small saplings. There’s another plant that permanently increases your health. Puzzle pathing is a staple of this game. I don’t mind because of the exquisite environment and my Na’ve Sense. The plant last night, there was a dot on the map, sometimes you can tell the elevation of the location, as compared to your icon, there were tall plateaus and pillars in the close vicinity, and I finally found it in a cave which is not unusual. Your Na’ve sense illuminates selected objects if you get close enough. I was up on the side of a large pillar, looked down and saw a speck which looke like it was on the valley floor but it was actually in a cave with an off set entrance. If not for your “sense” it would be mostly impossible to locate these things at all. I suppose in something like Elden Ring, they would not offer such a crutch. 🤔
  • Conan Exiles-Can be fun co-op, but as solo, I’m primarily indulging in base building. This game includes some minimalist, bare bones RPG elements, but it’s not a competant RPG, a game you would want to buy because it’s an RPG, because it’s not.
    • I completed the quest chain to acquire Freda as a companion. I’m using the term “quest chain” loosely. And now she’s my companion, as minimalist as the dialog was with her before, now I have zero verbal interaction with her. She’s just another NPC that’s bound to me, one of the stable of NPCs that I can take under my wing when I go fight and kill things so they can earn XP, raising their stats.
    • Regarding building, a lot of grind unless you make yourself an admin, and you can also select “Play Creative” which removes all grind if you just want to build. Funcom added some thrall mechanics that breath some life into your NPCs. There’s a “living colony” setting (something like that in server settings) which allows your thralls and hired workers to move about on their own vs standing there like statues as they did before. They will feed themselves, sleep, and just hang out, but they won’t talk to you. 😐 It still achieves the effect of making your settlement feel more life like.

A very stock build with only some weapons textures added which darken the models a little.

Console command to enable bloody splashes (bloodmarks) on bodies, disabled by default. Previously, the feature was enabled with no ability to disable it. You can enable it with
Code:
r__wallmarks_on_skeleton 1
Console command to show FPS
Code:
rs_FPS on

Playing Avowed on Steam Deck - and it is yet another excellent Obsidian game! Performance is solid - better than BG3 even after a year of patching, but with occasional stuttering for texture loads. Exploration and quests are loads of fun, and the hours are just rolling past!

March 2025
  • World of Warships- Still playing, still cursing.
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora- Incredible environment, many destinations have puzzle pathing as in they are hard to find, even with a dot on the map. You play as an orphaned Na’vi who was raised and somewhat assimilated by humans until, circumstances require your escape to remain alive. Good interactive dialog, yet I don’t feel like I’m really at home with either group, the Na’vi or the Rebel Humans who have side with the natives. No companions or romance. Polluting human resource extraction sites are all over the map, and it’s a pleasure, and sometimes challenging to destroy them. Humans are easiest (one punch kills), Scorpions (the smaller flying ships are fairly easy, and AMP (mechs) range from easy, to a bit more difficult if there is a pack of them. The story is going well, I actually found a quiet place to observe the jungle and sat in front of my computer eating dinner, just watching the trees sway, the critters fly and walk by and listened to environmental noises. It’s meditation worthy.
  • Conan Exiles- Playing mostly in creative mode, building my town, capturing or hiring exiles to work at. I would not buy this for its RPG qualities.
  • Detroit, Becoming Human- New comer to my active game stable, this is a very intriguing game, human/android facial animation are impressive. Here in the future, you play as three different androids and a simultaneous story. See the thread I started.

If into the SCP Foundation here's some updated & expanded versions of the classics that retain the same atmosphere:

SCP-087 The one that kicked it all off in the 3D realm, later evolving to improved SCP-087-B and many more.

SCP - Operation Decent
You find yourself at the entrance of a dark stairwell, containing many surreal secrets within its depths. You are Class-D personnel, sent by the SCP Foundation, an organization dedicated to containing and researching anomalous beings, objects and locations.
1740982692782.png
1740986708623.png

Your assignment is to recover an artifact brought into SCP-087 by previous Class-D personnel, the details of which are classified. SCP: Operation Descent is a first-person survival horror game based loosely on SCP-087 and the SCP Foundation, expanded to include new areas outside the stairwell. A mysterious entity lurks in the darkness, and your only options are to run or hide.

SCP - Containment Breach is a first person horror game where the player controls a D-class stuck in the middle of a large containment breach, releasing several dangerous SCPs that the player must evade before escaping. It was created by Joonas "Regalis" Rikkonen, a Finnish independent game developer also known for creating SCP-087-B.

Ultimate Edition is a global modification for SCP - Containment Breach. Includes new SCP's, new and expanded room's, increased performance, improved graphics & atmosphere.

1740987429593.png

The dark confinement Ultimate edition In early access. A further extension of the Ultimate Edition, looks to be a big update on the standard release so far.

All three bring many more dynamics to the games, with the latter two being the challenge for those into the genre.
All are free with no catches

I watched the video attached to the Operation Decent link, not all 40 min of it, about 5 min of descending a dark staircase, and then skipped though the remainder stopping several times, and it feels like an atmospheric walking simulator with some spooky elements. Similiar in feel to a primitive version of Doom 3 without the physical threat to your life that Doom represents. I could have easily missed it, but I’ll assume if you go far enough, there is there some action in that game other than observing and reading?

My question, the mod that’s in early access, any significant changes there?

SCP - Operation Decent, further you progress the more you will need to accomplish and deal with. I dont want to expand publicly as it's best to go in blind and the game is relatively short.

Have yet to play much of the early access game, so far; graphics, physics are improved with major mod packs combine.

Note: SCP - Operation Decent & SCP - Containment Breach are very different styles of game. SCP games are very experiential experiences so to spoil is not warranted.

Thing with these small dev teams is they have to focus on gameplay & narrative. Think outside the box, not scared of taking the risk...

AAA is failing in the west as many studios have lost their DNA, producing games for the wrong audience that are dull & soulless that overly rely on graphics to impress. So small wonder AAA is collapsing as when you make games for everyone you generally end up making games for no one.

What annoys is that studios such as Monolith & Tango Gameworks have been shuttered due to corporate incompetence & mismanagement. Worse studios are being thrown under the bus to support financials while underperforming one's get a green light to produce another 200 million+ dollar flop due to executive's who know jack about gaming listening to focus groups who are equally out of touch...

This is now why I generally prefer indie games these days and my back catalogue.

SWAT 4 and it's superb mods which are akin to new games have yet to be beaten in the genre. While newer exist they lack the atmosphere, depth and sheer intensity of SWAT 4 more so Elite Force & Back to Los Angeles.

"spiritual successor" I don't think it is in EA anymore, the videos of EA play throughs were pretty stressful to me, lol.

SWAT 4: Gold Edition on GOG, add in SWAT: Elite Force & SWAT: Back to Los Angeles hell of a lot more play. Verges on horror at times of the worst kind. Much is visually depicted in the gameworld, you as the player & team leader need to be aware & unravel the ongoing circumstance. You will be held accountable for your actions & your team's... Is a must play. If you get into it, is deeply compelling.

The Gold Edition is frequently on sale for pennies and the mods free.
