OS Neutral What Happened To Shoot Em Ups ?

I haven't played one of these in forever. Tyrian and Raptor were probably the last ones I played back in the 90s (I think). I'm guessing the market on PC isn't very good for these. Older consoles like TG16 and the Saturn is probably where it's at. I think I saw a few in the App Store though.

The "current" ones I've seen out -- I know I wouldn't last past the first level in those bullet hell shooters.

If you have a Mac you already own a PC. You simply need a Windows license.

A timely thread -- I've just done my bi-annual check to see if Xenon or Xenon 2: Megablast have appeared on the App Store. No joy (again!)

After Speedball 2 was released, I had some hope that one of the Xenons would be released. I absolutely love those games.

That genre has somewhat become out of fashion, but there are still a couple of recent, mostly indie shmups, for instance Jamestown, Psichodelya, Syder Arcade or Jets'n'Guns. (I only linked to the Steam versions, but most them are also available at other stores without ties to Steam.)

Just purchased Syder Arcade. Not a bad little shooter

My favourite genre, making a couple of them at the moment (for PC and consoles).

I don't know if you're locked to Mac or not, but there are a ton of Japanese-style bullet hell shooters on Steam. Gundemonium and Ikaruga are two of my faves and they're pretty well priced too considering their age.

Favourite historical ones;
R-Type 1 and 2, UN Squadron, Project X '99, Sidewinder, Pop N Twinbee, Parodius (Gameboy).
