I'm talking about the chime I used to get when I plugged my MacBook into power, not the boot up chime. I'm not sure if this went away with Big Sur but I can't find a setting for it anywhere. It's happening to both my M1 and early 2020 MBA.

I do not remember that chime ever existing, and I’ve been using a Mac laptop since 2001. Perhaps you are confusing the Mac with the iPad/iPhone, devices that indeed have a power up chime.

Nope, for sure it happened with my Macbooks. Maybe it was something off by default that you had to turn on but my Macbooks always chimed when I plugged into power.

I also tried terminal commands to turn the chime on but that didn't work. Again, this happened with a brand new out of the box M1 MBA.

It works on my M1 Air. It also worked on my 2018 and 2019 models, and I enabled it on my 2015.
Well there goes my theory that it went away with Big Sur. I'm assuming you're using the power adapter that came with your Air? I'm using a 65W from a previous Pro so maybe that has something to do with it?

No- I’m actually not using my Air power adapter. It happens regardless of what power source I use- as expected. I have some aftermarket chargers too. It even chimes when charged with a 5W brick!

So a bit more info... I get the chime when my system is on with the lid open and I plug in power. If the lid is closed (but the system is not shut down, it's just sleeping) I do not hear a chime when I plug into power. This is a new behavior...it used to chime when the lid was closed.

I don't have it on my 2015 MacBook Air, but I (vaguely) remember having it in the past, possibly on a previous MacBook.

You seem to be right. I still do not remember this chime on previous MacBooks, but on my current 16" MBP there is indeed a chime when connecting to power.

I hadn't noticed it before, so it is more than plausible there was one on the 2015 rMBP but I didn't noticed it either.

Do you also get the chime when the lid is closed? Running Big Sur?

The Magsafe Macs never had a chime when connecting power. That was new with the USB-C Macs, presumably because there was no longer a light on the cable to indicate if the computer was actually receiving power.
Makes sense, I also use USB-C MacBooks sometimes so that's probably what confused me. :)

Nah, he isn’t. Macbooks from at least late 2016 played the same connection/charging chime when power is connected.
