When the embargo lifts on Tuesday morning, I’m eager to learn whether or not Face ID has seen improvements, and that Apple felt like it may be too taboo to mention them. I hope this is the case but being that we haven’t even seen a mention of this on Apple’s website, I suspect it’s missing.

We would have heard about it. If Apple is willing to put "Great Battery Life" you can bet if Face ID was improved, they would have added that word.

What a shame. Now I need to decide if I wait until next year for this to possibly launch. I also need to decide whether to go down to the 12 mini or up to the 12 Pro. Not an easy year!

Maybe because most users don't have any issues with the current (fast) FaceID?
It’s not the speed, hifimacianer. It’s the angles that need improving, which they were rumored to be working on. I said that I was surprised that more people weren’t discussing this, and then you spoke on behalf of “most users” saying they don’t have an issue with Face ID. I’m so glad I know have a single person to speak to when I need the opinion of most people.

I have a work iPhone 8S Plus - TouchID. My personal XS Max with FaceID is mostly good. Too many instances where it won't unlock/register/continue for whatever reason. Having a mask on with FaceID sucks. I have a long password and I hate having to enter it all the time. TouchID on the other hand, so simple. They need to really bring this back. Have both. It was a terrible decision to get rid of it. I also don't understand the split in products that have TouchID vs FaceID.

Seems Apple can't figure it out.

They need to ditch Face ID and move on to Retina ID. Masks aren’t going anywhere anytime soon unfortunately.

Yes! Users should have a choice (perhaps non-default) to drop down to retina/eye-only ID unlock. Let users voluntarily choose a weaker unlock when they are out and about with a mask on. After all most are resorting to punching in 4-digit passcode instead (which is far weaker than a eye unlock and can be seen by everyone around)

Yeah, I think I've made my decision to wait until next year to see what Face ID (and hopefully Touch ID in the power button, though unlikely) enhancements are made with the next model.

They need Touch ID under the display. Touch ID is so much better than FAce ID it’s not even funny. That’s the reason why I sold my XS and kept my 8 plus

I think most of us (including me) say Touch ID on the power button since we know it exists already and would be the quickest solution (fix) they could implement, but I honestly think the "under the screen" variant is the one they need to focus on and release ASAP. Having the Touch ID on the power button on a phone might be problematic with cases. It would suck that all case manufacturers would then need to make a huge cutout on one side of the phone for it. The volume cutout is fine as it is very small.

Seems like someone has a misunderstanding of the word "rumor" So here we go

Rumor - noun - a currently circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth.

You can't make decisions based on rumors, or get your hopes up over anything other than what Apple officially says they are working on. Rumor chasing on sites like this is fun at times, but you have to remember, at the end of the day, it's still just a rumor.

No. I seriously doubt that Apple (or anyone else) would tout Face ID in the midst of a pandemic where it makes FaceID useless when wearing a mask.
