What Happens When Apple Music Dies On September 30

Like millions of others, I have opted out of the auto renewal and will not continue with Apple music after September 30. I don't want to spend $120 a year for the rest of my life simply to listen to songs I already have, and renting music perpetually makes no sense for me or my family.

What I am wondering is: what becomes of the Music app on iOS and the iTunes application for desktop when the Apple music trial expires.

Does any fragment of the current service remain? Will "for you" become some sort of "suggestions"? Does Radio default back to iTunes Radio? I haven't taken any songs off-line so I'm not worried about any impact to my Library. But I enjoyed the services in iTunes that were there before they converted it to this new money grabbing idea and want to know if they will revert back to what they were before.

To state that Apple Music is "dying" because you chose to opt out of Auto Renewal is fairly short sighted, don't you think? I personally am keeping my subscription, and by the way, if you're thrifty you can save on the $9.99 a month if you signed up to pay out of your iTunes account balance. I only top up my iTunes balance with 20% or better off iTunes gift cards which are fairly common. So I'm actually paying about $7.99/mo or $96.00/yr.

As far as what happens once you quit the service, all music added to your library during the trial will be grayed out I believe. Beats 1 and the radio stations will still be accessible. I don't know what happens to For You tab...

Apple Music does not suit my needs. I own 25,000 songs so there's no need for me to pay again to listen to Sergeant Pepper. I also believe the current state of rock music is weak and there were very few bands each year that actually get my attention enough to warrant spending money.

In today's world, free radio such as Pandora and iTunes will suffice for me. Trying to find out what happens on the 30th when Apple Music shuts down for me and what state of my apps turns into on that day.

The bigger issue aren't the millions who are opting-out and not auto-renewing as of next week. The bigger issue is that only 15M of the 500M iPhone users worldwide have even taken advantage of the free Apple Music offering to begin with.

And for the record, I like most aspects of Apple Music. I just don't want to pay for it. Because I can get everything Apple Music offers a-la-carte at no charge.

You asked for proof of that statement.

You just posted a link to an article that says a) there were 11 Million Apple Music subscribers and that b) 21% have opted-out so far.

11,000,000 x .21 = 2,310,000

If you knew I was correct you didn't need to go to such lengths to prove it.

or alternate Apple could remove all your music. It probably works like Itunes Match when u cancel, music stays around from a few days, then deletes from cloud.
 
I'd imagine what happens is the same as when you deselect "Show Apple Music" in iTunes preferences: For You and New disappear and Radio and Connect stay. But we'll find out soon enough.

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense.

I think iTunes Radio is terrific and I wouldn't want to lose it.

On the iPHone when you deselect Apple Music you are left with three tabs:

- My Music
- Radio
- Playlists

Radio still gives you access to Beats 1 and all the other stations. For you and connect are gone.

Where's the option to pay with iTunes credit?
 
I'm keeping it and happy with it. $5 a person for me is great ($15 for the family, 3 in our family). Then we get iTunes gift cards cheaper than face value, makes it better. Yes, I have over 21,000 songs in iTunes library, but this will help for new stuff. This has saved me money too. I listened to some only bands that I use to like, was thinking about buying their stuff, but didn't. I listened to the albums about 5-10 times and stopped, and haven't listened to them again. I would have spent $30-35 for those 3 albums and not listened to them again.

Just because it doesn't suit your needs, it suits mine.

Me too. Apple Music is complete garbage, so I tried out Spotify Premium to see how subscription music should work, and because I liked the concept of it. I'll probably keep my Spotify subscription.
 
The only problem really that I have with Spotify is that on my Android phone Spotify will not play local files, and Poweramp will not play Spotify files. This is the one thing where Apple Music would excel if 1) the Android app existed and 2) the bugs were squashed.

Can you elaborate? I can't wait for Apple Music to die tonight but two of my kids want me to keep it.

Super strange how I was switching between Apple Music and Spotify yesterday for a large part of the whole day, listening to music doing work/studying at the library.

Listened to Spotify's Discover Weekly Playlist (playlist curated specifically for you). Was blown away by the songs that were played. Didn't even have to like or tell it to play more of it. Would give an estimate that 80% of the songs were amazing. Ended up saving 7 new songs and artists I had never heard of before.

Now, I've listened to the Discover Weekly Playlist before, but it just felt like Spotify went all out and I guess they succeeded because they convinced me, that Apple Music's curation system simply just is not good compared to there's.

I'm sorry. But Apple Music simply doesn't do it.

- Apple Music has a great family plan for $15 but Spotify has a great student plan for $5.

- Pre iOS 8/Apple Music, I would argue that the Music app UI was a lot more better and easier than Spotify's app which was pretty slow. Looking at the UI for Apple Music after not joining it, it looks a lot more cleaner which is a flaw.

- Spotify, I can click once and have the song added to my collection.

- Finding genres honestly is just better on Spotify because there's a lot more of it.

- Love how Spotify notify you when they update their playlists that you saved. Wish Apple Music could do the same or even update them at all.

The cluttered interface of Apple Music is the main reason. There are so many problems with it.

1. If you're listening to a specific song, as far as i know there is no way to open up the artist page or the rest of the album. i recently found out you can tell Siri to do those things but that's no excuse for not having a way to do it through the interface.

2. The iTunes Store and Apple Music are still separated when I don't see a compelling reason for that. I should be able to read reviews of albums in Apple Music.

3. I have local versions of different songs from Live performances. When I use Apple Music to play an album and there is a song that is the same name and artist as a live version that I have, Apple Music will play the live version that I have stored and not the album version because it thinks that they're the same thing.

These are just things I thought of, I'm sure I have many other frustrations with it. Also, Spotify is faster on my phone. The interface is a lot better and I like having different places for my local music and my steaming music.
