iOS 9 Predictions

Ok it won't be until next summer, but these are some of mine:

  • 3rd Party API's for Apple Pay
  • A 'Project Volta' style initiative to improve battery life through smart actions
  • Customise Control Centre or the addition of Settings.app
  • Side by Side apps on the 6 Plus/iPad's
  • Safari tabs broken out in Multitasking view like in Android 5.0 Lollipop
  • A Snow Leopard moment?
  • Further Apple Watch integration

Thoughts? Ideas?

The ONLY thing on my list right now is opening up Siri to change default apps.

"Play top 40" Will open Spotify
"Navigate home" Will open Google Maps
"text Bob hello" Will open WhatsApp

etc.

Currently, while driving, I have to say "Hey Siri, open Spotify", then touch the screen. Very unsafe. Same with "open google maps"

There are 3rd Party APIs for Apple Pay. If you mean to enable NFC for 3rd party developers, that's unrelated to Apple Pay.

Multitasking might be in the works for iOS 8.2 or 8.3 as predicted to be released before iOS 9. But iOS 9 seems like a good place to have it.

Personally, I'd like them to tighten up animations and fix all the slight quirks left in the system since iOS 7. For instance, the search animation in Photos app needs work. The app icons in multitasking don't animation when app is closed. Things like stutter control center at times and hard to open control center when keyboard is open. Things like lock screen frame rates.

Quick reply needs an API as well as some fixes. The text should auto-save to the messages app if you decide not to send them right away. This would stop accidental mistypes that cause the text to not get sent.

I'd also like a lock screen redesign that takes advantage of Touch ID. Currently with Touch ID, you see the lock screen much less because its quick to scan and unlock.

Kind of a minor thing, but I'd like the ability to finally edit a song title or info in the music app. For instance, I'll sync it with my iTunes/iTunes Match, notice one or two typos on the song, or the track listing might be a bit off, every once in a while I'm out listening, but there's no way to edit it. That would be a great feature to include.

I'd like to see IOS optimized for whichever device downloads it, meaning a device like an iPad 2 which was purchased not long ago at all is not obsolete on the most recent software.

I don't care if my iPad 2 or older iPhone can't do everything the new devices can't do. That's fine. But I'd like it to be able to do, at the same speed, what it could do when I bought it.

I'd like to see IOS enhance, or at least leave neutral, and definitely not degrade, the capabilities of my IOS devices.

No planned obsolescence. Please.

That's what I want.

We'll upgrade when the time comes, not because we must. My automobile doesn't lose capabilities over time, other than wear and tear. It just doesn't keep up with newer technology. I'd like to see the same of my handheld devices.

I'd like to see HDR stay selected once you chose until you chose to turn it off. I hate the fact it switches off on its own.

I'd like to see iOS 9 make use of the motion processor and have it detect when your driving to disable incoming texts and email, or a driving mode which would do this. And have it auto reply the person texting you to tell them your unavailable and to have them call you if it's important.

I'd like to see the ability to record video in less than 1080P, the file sizes for that are ridiculous, sharing them almost impossible at full resolution. Add the 60 fps and the file size is even more nuts. Almost 200 megabytes per minute.

good idea but what about passengers? Add a means to disable that for the passengers and irresponsible drivers would just disable it.

I want to see the Swipe to the Left Fully to Delete feature like in email become system wide.

VOICEMAIL

Solve the problem of voicemail getting full..

Voice mail auto delete setting -
Auto delete Voicemails from_____ within___ days.

Or delete oldest Voicemail feature (to make room for the newest one)

Save voicemails to the cloud so they don't take up space from your phone

New Feature: Visual voicemail 2.0: voicemails into text (see your voicemail transcription)

iMessage
Bold and italics
The ability to edit a photo taken while in an iMessage, before sending it. Currently if you take a photo using iMessage app, there is nothing you can do to it before sending it, it would be cool if all the editing options from the Photos app were ported over.

Email
Send more than 1 photos at once. I'm glad in iOS 8 they gave this functionality to iMessage but ignored E-mail. Currently the only way to do this is to select the pictures from within the photos app and tap 'copy'. Then you can 'paste' them all into e-mail. Why not just be able to select multiple photos from within the e-mail app?

Camera
Option in settings to auto-disable flash when app opens. I don't know about you but I always miss a good moment because the stupid flash was on, taking the time to turn it off also makes you miss the moment. I hardly ever use flash on my iPhone as its good in low light settings.

I'd love to be able to stop texts and iMessages sending

3rd party APIs and Safari Tabs already exist like that.

Seeing how quick reply was in Mavericks last year and made it to ios 8, would not be surprised if the social media widget introduced in Yosemite gets in iOS 9 next year.

Definitely would like Apple to get more aggressive with power saving optimizations. We don't need thin as paper phones of the battery life is subpar compared to the competition.

Fix the nagging issues from the iOS 7+ conversion.

More system wide use of the bigger screens for the 6/6+. I get the fragmentation argument, but Apple has already started on that path with the UI tweaks for both phones. Go all out.

Really wouldn't be surprised if UI elements from Yosemite and Apple watch gets introduced

i would like a way to save your settings to icloud.
if you have to reset your phone or ipad it can take ages going through all the settings again. if apple would let us just save a file to icloud and restore it, that would be great

If you backup to iCloud your settings are saved.

If you backup to iCloud your settings are saved.

As well as everything else that people may not want to restore.
It's always annoyed me that Apple's solution to many issues is do a full restore as new, but doing so loses certain settings, email accounts set up, and app progress.
Selective backup/restore would be nice, so you can leave behind the mysterious xGB of "other" wasted space, fix that battery issue, but get app data/progress back.

iOS 9 Wishlist

So, iOS 8 has now been in the hands of Consumers for a little over three months. But we are now around 6 months away from the unveiling of iOS 9. This should be a 'Tock' version, and should therefore introduce major changes as iOS 5 and 7 have in the past. So what would you like to see included? My personal preferences would be.

1. Split Screen Multi Tasking on iPad Air 2.

2. Improvements to Handoff Reliability and compatibility.

3. General Bug Fixes

4. Siri API - This would mean developers could display their own content in Siri. E.g you could say 'What is the latest news from the BBC'.

5. New Maps - Currently much of the imagery is far lower resolution than in Google, would be great to see this updated.

6. Customising Control Centre with other built in applications.

7. Group FaceTime

9. GeoPasscode - Only put the passcode on when I'm away from a certain area. E.g my house.

10. Return of share widgets in Notification Centre.

True multitasking and app split screen sound great. Some kind of restricted and touch ID based guest mode for the iPad would be nice. And the UI needs refinement especially on larger devices (nc uses so much space for so little information). Dark mode would be cool. And on top of that i'm really hoping for an adblock safari extension. Fullscreen Ads with a small X suck on touch screen devices.

I think for a little bit but if you close the app or your phone restarts it goes back to normal settings.

This hasn't been my experience. Flash always stays off for me (I almost never turn it on, and when I do, I immediately turn it back off), even between reboots. Just tested to confirm.
