Glad to hear it. Is your Mini the 2009 model? Is your drive model the WD3200BJKT?

I installed the WD Scorpio Black 320GB 7200rpm HDD in my Mac mini.

This disk is noticeably faster than the 120GB 5400rpm HDD it came with.

Yes, I have the '09 Mac mini.

The drive I bought is the WD3200BEKT. This is the same as the WD3200BJKT but does not have the free-fall sensor. I did not feel it necessary to spend the extra $10 for the sensor since I am not using the HDD in a laptop and will not be moving the mini around.

Cheers.

That is strange alright. Try removing everything except a mouse just to see if it makes a difference.

Tried removing everything apart from the mouse and the boot up times still about 60 seconds???:confused: I don't know if to re-install leopard 10.5, do a erase and install, then use migration form my other mac? See if this speed the drive up.

Monkey magic could you please do me a favour. Shutdown your mini. Then start it by the power button and time how long it takes for the desktop to appear? :)

Agreed. I noticed the two available options and clearly the free-fall sensor is not a requirement in a non-mobile computer.

My suggestion is that you only allow the Mini to have 1 OS to boot from. If you have an external drive connected by USB with an OS on it, it may be confused, even if you have selected the internal HD as your startup disk. I suggest unplugging the external HD and reboot with only the internal HD available. Then see how fast the Mini boots.

I've only been using 1 Hard drive with os on since I did the upgrade, and that's the internal one. The external one has been in my draw as a back up and never plugged in to the mini, apart from when I did the boot tests earlier.

Big bird could you do the same as I asked magic monkey 'could you please do me a favour. Shutdown your mini. Then start it by the power button and time how long it takes for the desktop to appear?'

Actually, you should never use a drive with a free fall sensor because apple portables already have their own. I've heard bad reports on the boards about drives with sensors conflicting with the mac's sensors and causing premature wear and failure on the drive.

Im gettig so f/ing sick n tired of waiting for the 500GB 7200 drives to come out. WTF.

I am using a WD 1 TB Green WD10EADS drive in a transcend enclosure

is there any way to convert firewire 800 to esata??

Seagate Momentus 5400.6 or 7200.4?

I have the X25-M 80 GB SSD as the first internal drive and am looking at perhaps replacing the optical drive with another HD.

I will be getting either the Seagate Momentus 5400.6 or the 7200.4 version.

Anyone have either of these in their 09 mini?

I am more concerned with noise/heat than with slower transfer speeds.

Any thoughts if the 7200 would be noticably noisier/warmer than the 5400 version?

Here is a review of the 7200 one, comparing it to the 320 GB Scorpio and 320GB Travelstar http://www.barefeats.com/note05.html

And a review of the 5400 one, comparting it to the 500 GB WD http://www.silentpcreview.com/500gb_laptop_drives

From Seagate's data sheets (both are 500GB models):
5400.6:
Power: 1.54W (Seek), 0.81/0.22W (Idle/Standby)
Noise: 2.6bels (Seek), 2.4bels (Idle)

7200.4:
Power: 1.55W (Seek), 0.67W (Idle)
Noise: 2.5bels (Seek), 2.3bels (Idle)

This suggests that the 7200rpm drive should actually be marginally more quiet than the 5400rpm drive!
And heat dissipation is almost identical for the two drives.

The 7200.4 has twice the cache (16mb vs 8mb), weighs 11.2 grams more and costs a third more (here in Denmark - something like 153$ and 116$ respectively).

maybe it's a little bit off topic but....

i've just installed a wd 7200 320 gb BEKT hd.
the mini is Really FAST .... but it's noisy, becouse it's vibrating!
if i put the mini on some sheet and then on the desk, no noise.
but if i put it directly on the desk it becomes noisy

suggestion???

Thats what im waiting on THEN i will upgrade the ram to 4GB aswell!

Im seriously tempted to just go for the 320 HDD!

Why don't you install your ram, then install your hard drive when it comes in stock! :D That's what I did, I've had my mini open twice, 3 times if I include my brothers mini, get's easier every time!

How is everyone doing with their 7200 drives so far? Any issues?

I read some reviews on newegg that the seagate 7200.4 500gb is actually SLOWER than the 5400 version in some cases.

I also read some expert say that unless your 500gb drive isnt like 70% empty all the time it wont be faster than a 5400.

Off course there are tons of reports that say the opposite..

I just cant decide and my mini arrives in a few days!

Any comments?
Thanks :)

Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM for the internal.

Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB for the external, in a newerTech miniStack case.

Got it all put together last Friday when the mini arrived. Easy to install, and tons of space!

Cripes!!

Snap.

Still waiting for it all to arrive and the fun to begin.

Did you go with the ministack v3 or v2.5 - I went with v2.5 as I'm only planning on using it for backups.
