It's a glitch, mine was bright but when I moved onto other springboard page and back, it turned to traditional darker blue.

I think the difference in shade denotes how long ago it was updated. Like blue iMessage bubbles.

I know it dark blue dot means that the app has been updated... like on day one for example..

But what is the light blue dot like on Twitter?

I also know that a red dot means that it's a beta version.

I just gave myself an all black background and all the dots that were once light blue went to dark. The reason for the change is the background

Doesn't seem like that would quite explain seeing a dark and a light one on the same background as in the screenshot that was included in the quoted post.

i can confirm it seems to be a glitch.
got a light blue dot, and after switching left to "today" and back it got dark blue.

Haven't tried that, but I did see some light blue dots suddenly yesterday after update some apps.

that doesn't indicate how long ago it was sent. simply how high or low it is on the screen, as evident by scrolling through messages and seeing their colour change. the date/time on messages doesn't change just by scrolling. there is just a gradient from top to bottom.

the obvious indicator of how long ago they were sent is their position in the conversation and the dates and times attached to them...

the gradient is probably just stylistic, or perhaps to draw more attention to the most recent messages.
