Weh....I'm not, I'm buying another netbook to hack. Unlike Apple I made the right decisions over the last few years regarding truly mobile computing and no longer have to worry about it;)

The prosecution rests. I have just seen this latest Apple tablet and it's a useless device, just as I've been describing the last few days. Koolaid drinkers enjoy, you brain-dead Apple sheeple. Thank any and all who have developed even one line of code regarding Hackintosh's, you are my heros. For me, Apple software is great, the severely limiting hardware is ****. Thank you Michael Dell for building netbooks with the proper hardware to support OS X. Forget you, you non-innovative blind following Apple scum. Bye bye, I'm back to my Hackintosh site to be with people I can relate to. Cheers and enjoy your kickstands!!......what a ****ing joke......

Maybe we are missing the point

We maybe in danger of missing the point.

Think of the IPAD as a surface (isurface doesn't work).

There are so many applications for this. We can extend through bluetooth / wifi to computers or other devices. There will need to be development but software will ultimately drive the innovation, and it doesn't have to be only OSX based.

Some ideas....

* Control home automation.
* PS3 Keyboard (well it could):p.
* Flight Gauges and controls for MSFS / X-Plane (predictable)
* Transport controls for Logic / Final Cut
* Midi Controller / Fader Banks / VI controller.

While it doesn't multitask, I think it is a smart move because it guarantees a level of performance so the app you are running is going to have all the resources, is this such a bad idea?

I think it's ballsy for Apple to challenge the way we use technology. We are so used to the convergence of things it almost seems to counter what we have seen happening.

I for one welcome a company that mixes it up and takes a risk.

Goodbye simpleton with no vision or insight.

I'm enjoying this so much i decided to stay:). My vision is clearer than Apples. They said they wanted something that did tasks better or it wasn't worth doing. And they did, it's probably great for surfing, until you want to view flash or actually save anything at least. But the problem is it does so few tasks that you have to lug all the stuff that is lugged around now in addition to the iPad if you want to actually be productive. OR, grab a netbook and your iPhone and away you go. Enlighten me, what insight am I missing, have they lied to us and will be holding another keynote where they appear with something "magical"? They even use language like they live in La La land, which they do.

Well...it's out...and I'm still not impressed...

What a let down -.-'

Why does it need to be able to do all that stuff like multi-tasking? It's not a computer, its just like a large iPod. Do you expect your iPod touch/iPhone to be able to do loads of different things at once like a computer?

I'm looking at it from an entirely different perspective. The Proloquo2go text to speech app was extremely popular on an ipod touch/iPhone for people with speech difficulties who don't want to lug around a huge communication aid.

As a person who has co-ordination difficulties and was unable to use an regular sized iPod touch cos it was too small I am thrilled that they have made a larger version of it as I can now finally have an iPod I can use AND have the added bonus that I can use it as communication aid if someone cant understand me.

Its a 'mainstream' device that looks cool, rather than having a 'special' device that makes you feel (and look I suspect) more disabled.

I have found my Apple Mac's very reliable and reliability is what you need if it is also your communication method, no more been stuck cos windows is taking 15 mins to boot up or wont boot up so you can't 'speak' to anyone cos your computer wont start!

I say WELL DONE APPLE for dragging AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) into the 21st Century!

It needs multitasking for things like AIM and Web browsing at the same time. Or looking up information and typing a report. Or listening to internet radio while typing something up or browsing the web. Going out and in everytime will be annoying.

That being said, I will be getting 32GB Wifi one on launch day :). A small little annoyance that I can deal with once developers start making "multitask-type" apps. For instance, AIM on the left, web browser on the right ;-).

I can't wait to get mine, so I can use it to do multitasking web chats in flash over the verizon network while charging with solar panels and typing on the backside buttons that operate the full OS X, since that is the only thing I would ever need it for.

That's technically wrong, but I see what you're getting at, and you're right.

You can still have AIM push you notifications, and read those while browsing, etc. But it's not as simple as throwing in a reply, and going on your way, you have to go home, open aim, respond, go home, go to the web.

I could see Apple expanding on the current simple push notification box to allow you to respond to messages within the box, but I doubt it.

I'm going to be selfish here because I'm glad some or a lot of people aren't getting an iPad. Less competition equals waiting in line less & more chance of getting on release day. Hate all you want but I'm going to participate & get one. :D

Does anyone know how much it maybe for around a 16GB one just the wifi version? (in UK) just a rough estimate? we talking £500? less? more? trying to juggle my finances here so i can get one when it comes out!

I tried to ask iTunes about how to download videos as it mentions closed captioning but they were unable to tell me anything as it isnt officially released yet!

I think the emails go to US when you click on help so i got instructions for US itunes (eventually when i asked how to add subtitled videos to an ipod nano instead!) but in UK store i could not get a list of subtitled films following the same directions.

Am I allowed to download from US store with same account, or do I need to create a new one just to download directly onto the iPad?

Lastly someone just mentioned 'typing on the backside buttons that operate the full OS X' what does this mean? I thought it was only the iPhone OS on it not like mac computer?

I'm sure this has already been elsewhere here on the forums, but an iPad is really the sci-fi computer I always dreamed of back in the day!

"When he tired of official reports and memoranda and minutes, he would plug his foolscap-sized Newspad into the ship's information circuit and scan the latest reports from Earth. One by one he would conjure up the world's major electronic papers ... Switching to the display unit's short-term memory, he would hold the front page while he quickly searched the headlines and noted the items that interested him. ... the postage-stamp-sized rectangle would expand until it neatly filled the screen and he could read it with comfort. When he had finished, he would flash back to the complete page and select a new subject for detailed examination.
Floyd sometimes wondered if the Newspad, and the fantastic technology behind it, was the last word in man's quest for perfect communications. Here he was, far out in space, speeding away from Earth at thousands of miles an hour, yet in a few milliseconds he could see the headlines of any newspaper he pleased. (That very word "newspaper," of course, was an anachronistic hangover into the age of electronics.) The text was updated automatically on every hour; even if one read only the English versions, one could spend an entire lifetime doing nothing but absorbing the ever-changing flow of information from the news satellites.

It was hard to imagine how the system could be improved or made more convenient. But sooner or later, Floyd guessed, it would pass away, to be replaced by something as unimaginable as the Newspad itself would have been to Caxton or Gutenberg."

i just want a ipad and use it as a main computer for emails, webrowsing and of course it needs to be able tp play flash , no need for hd video or other gimicks

no i dont want to spend thousands for a macbook which needs lots of space on the desk

i was fascinated by the optimus tactus a touchscreen keyboard , and thought would it not be perfect if there was a computer inside too ,and the iPad appeared , so you can use it at home and just unplug the monitor and take it with you , no need for extra keyboard or mouse , just a all in one design and a small footprint and affordable it has to be, but pricing it above the mini is pointless and makes it only affordable for the upper class ,as a look what i can afford... after showing off the 10 ferrari , the learjet, the boat and the house with 200 feet swimming pool comes the ipad :(

so it seems i need to settle for a dell mini 10 which runs osx and dream about a touchscreen keyboard

I think it will be around £399, I don't think they'd want to go throught the 400 barrier in the U.K.

Well...it's out...and I'm still not impressed...

What a let down -.-'

I am impressed! It is extension to the iphone, but much more! The chip is impressive. The hardware is there! Software is fine, but there is plenty of room for improvements. I think Multi-task is coming for sure! I think a hybrid pc unit can be like ipad+mac book pro hybrid!

No it will very likely just be a big iPhone/touchscreen laptop without a keyboard.

Look at the limits on the iphone due to the screen size! A large screen allows developers to do more creative stuff. Monopoly board on it!! We can tap all around the screen to play! Again, a combo with the mac book pro in the configuration with Ipad like the Lenova Ideapad hybrid!

I agree entirely. I'll admit that I'm a complete tablet nay-sayer and have no interest, or can even fathom why anyone would want one. If you have a PC/Mac (desktop or macbook) and an iphone (or any other PDA phone) this device serves absolutely zero purpose in my mind. Not to be one of those people who just slam a device without giving any reason behind it, here are the reasons I think a tablet is a waste of time :

1.) In a 6-800 price range, this thing WILL be an expensive netbook. Apple is cheap. In this bracket, you will not find expensive components.
2.) To maintain Apples great "user experience," this thing will have to run a modified iPhone OS. Sure, Apple will port over a lot of their iWork & iLife programs over, but what about 3rd party apps? Photoshop? Excel? Forget it.
3.) Sure, it may redesign how people view magazines and newspapers, but you better believe that Apple is also redesigning the advertising aspect of things. There will be annoying ads all over these things.
4.) At 10", you'll still need a bag/case to carry this thing around. It's really no more portable than a 13 MBP/MBA. That.. and your screen will scratch much easier than a normal notebook.
5.) A touch-screen based keyboard can never replace physical keys in my opinion. I realize that Apple wouldn't design the iPad to replace their notebooks, but is everyone really looking for that "extra" device they just never realized they needed?

I don't get it.

If all you do on a computing device is surf, game, and write a paper or two, then this is perfect. It cost less than a pc or laptop. Why spend a grand or more for just a few thiings.

I have a Macbook. I have an iPhone. Still, the iPad could be extremely useful for me for these reasons:

- For most of my school projects I use iWork. And while I won't do projects from start to finish on the iPad it will allow me to get some work done on the go. The virtual keyboard isn't a problem for me since I'm used to the iPhone keyboard.

- Now most of you will say I could just use my Macbook. The problem is that on the days I have school and work I also have to carry my work uniform plus the shoes plus makeup and then all my school stuff. Anything I can get to lighten my load is a godsend. Plus I don't really use textbooks, I mostly use PDFs. I can get those on the iPad as well.

1.) In a 6-800 price range, this thing WILL be an expensive netbook. Apple is cheap. In this bracket, you will not find expensive components.

This isn't supposed to be a netbook.

2.) To maintain Apples great "user experience," this thing will have to run a modified iPhone OS. Sure, Apple will port over a lot of their iWork & iLife programs over, but what about 3rd party apps? Photoshop? Excel? Forget it.

Again, this is not supposed to be a netbook or a laptop. And still, apps like QuickOffice and Documents to Go for the iPhone will work on the iPad and could eventually have an iPad version.

3.) Sure, it may redesign how people view magazines and newspapers, but you better believe that Apple is also redesigning the advertising aspect of things. There will be annoying ads all over these things.

The advertising part has nothing to do with Apple. And seriously, don't magazines and newspapers already have ads? What's your point here?

4.) At 10", you'll still need a bag/case to carry this thing around. It's really no more portable than a 13 MBP/MBA. That.. and your screen will scratch much easier than a normal notebook.

For me it will be like carrying a book with me, which I already do 95% of the time. And you can get case. Actually the Apple one is really cool.

5.) A touch-screen based keyboard can never replace physical keys in my opinion. I realize that Apple wouldn't design the iPad to replace their notebooks, but is everyone really looking for that "extra" device they just never realized they needed?

Emphasis on the bold part. And again, this is not really meant to replace anything, it's more to compliment what you already have.

For a long time I considered getting a MacBook Air since I wanted something lighter but it's too expensive for me. The iPad will do nicely for what I need.

Depends what you need from it.

I have a 24" iMac in office that has everything I need it to have photoshop, office mac, printer/scanner connected etc. Obviously its too big to be portable. I also have a white macbook in my bedroom (as i cant sit for long due to back problems) even that is too big to be portable as I also need a over sized trackball to use to 'steer' the cursor.

The iPad will be smaller and fit on my lap or a wheelchair tray to use as a communication aid (using the proloquo2go app from iTunes store). As its direct touchscreen I don't need any other device to select items on screen.

Due to the zoom feature it has built in for sight impaired people i can also use it to zoom in and make any links, buttons large enough for me to hit first time without it been so much of a struggle with smaller touchscreen phones.

I'm only disappointed that the 3G model is data only and wont send SMS text messages as this is getting a struggle on my blackberry storm due to fine motor difficulties. Otherwise I would have waited and get the 3G model.

I linked to a blog post I wrote a few days ago in another thread, but it probably fits better in this one, so I apologize if you've already seen this:

http://rittchard.wordpress.com/2010/01/29/apples-ipad-imagining-what-it-can-do/

For me, I see the iPad becoming my primary browser at home, the one I grab for everywhere use (by the TV, in the bathroom, at the kitchen table, etc) when I need a quick answer or to look something up. It will also be my "cozy" device (presently the Macbook Air), the one I curl up on the recliner with for longer periods of browsing, or reading, or maybe gaming.

I also see it becoming the central hub and command center for all my home electronics, sort of using the cloud computing concept but keeping it within my own home. Logmein can remotely run my desktops and take care of whatever need taking care of, I can access my HP home server for all my downloaded content, Slingbox to watch TV, wireless cam software to check security cams, Remote (and upcoming infrared remote device/app) to control iTunes/Airport, TV/stereo, etc.

Work-wise, I listed some examples in my blog post which I think are very realistic uses that only begin to tap the potential of the device. I was talking to a friend of mine (a medical doctor) and he had thought of a bunch of things he'd like to do on the iPad, everything from accessing patient records (replacing paper) to accessing medical references on the fly to examining digital X-rays and test results.

I also think the entire concept of "intimacy" (yes I know this sounds creepy with an electronic device) should not be overlooked, and I believe is something that most people will continue to underestimate until they actually try one out. If you are holding it in one hand and interacting by touch with the other, it's an inherently "closer" experience than you have with a traditional keyboard/mousepad on a laptop or desktop.

So "what is a tablet even good for?" - a whole lot if you ask me.

Weh....I'm not, I'm buying another netbook to hack. Unlike Apple I made the right decisions over the last few years regarding truly mobile computing and no longer have to worry about it;)

I'd love to see that badass netbook running some HD flash video! Please post a Youtube video so we can all see that 2 fps action!

Netbooks are a joke trying to run Flash, Hulu full screen? I've seen/tried to load it in stores on every model they had from MSI, DELL, Asus, HP etc.. they all fail to run it full screen. Let me guess you believe 1.6ghz Atom is faster and more powerful than the Apple A4 chip right?

I'm glad your standards are low enough to find joy out of your netbook, the rest of us require a much better user experience.
