What is apple trying to do with the secret release time

Is this a marketing strategy? Or they are just not ready?

I'm going abroad next Sunday, 24th, and my current laptop just stopped working. I really want to get an MBA, which would be my first apple, before I take off. I'm really disappointed of all the rumors we had about the release date. If somehow they don't release it before then, I would have to buy another windows laptop, because I don't want to buy something that is going to be outdated in this month. I'm living in Wyoming and there are not any apple stores here.(we do have 1 bestbuy but it has no apple store either) I have to drive down to Colorado to get it. Yikes...

there are excellent mba alternatives out there. but, they aren't macs. so, i guess if you don't care about the operating system, no need to wait. if it were me, i would take my ipad. i posted a thread about getting things done on it in the ipad forum. basically, if you are wanting the computer for work, you might be able to get by for quite a while with the ipad.

Wow...

If a new generation of computers comes out a week or 2 after you buy then you would feel pretty bad about your purchase.

However, the current MBAs give the best bang for your buck in the ultrabook category so there aren't any real Windows alternatives at the moment unless you want to buy an overpriced Samsung Series 9.

I'm going to China. Apple online store in China is $100 more expensive than US online store, which makes me feel really bad if I have to pay more to get the same thing. Now I'm just crossing my fingers and hope they release the leak before the 24th.

My bet is that the Lion comes out on the night between Fri 22nd and Sat 23rd of July (it's symbolic, because we're entering the astro-sign of Leo). They might release the new MBA at the same time if it's already imminent.

If it is only $100 more expensive, why not just buy it there? You would probably pay $50 to have it express mailed to you here.

Honestly, the current MBA is a heck of a Mac too. Granted, Thunderbolt will be better on the new MBA and more storage and RAM standard sounds nice, BUT the current Nvidia MBAs are rocking when it comes to graphics vs. the Intel IGP. It is like two steps forward but a big step back too just to wait for the new ones.

I do understand about wanting the latest, but sometimes the latest doesn't actually produce results when anti-competitive actions like Intel made with its IGP/chipset make latest not all it's cracked up to be. I think many people may be better off wanting the 2010 MBAs for huge discounts on clearance vs. the new... whether they know it or not.

Well - to me it seems like Apple wants to appear mysterious, keeping a distance between the sacred and the profane - and thus amplify the hype around new releases. Can't really see how that makes me a fanboy. Everyone knows that Apple is more secretive than any other tech company.

I agree with this...apple has not done anything to enhance/perpetrate a mystery...it's all fanboys guessing. No diff than watching BMW or Porsche release their models: they do it when they are ready. Apple is no diff.

Actually it might very well could be because of the conference call this week. Perhaps to raise stock prices since Apple did close at an all time high this past week or it could just be a coincidence.

How is Intel being anti-competitive? It's not like having a Sandy Bridge chip automatically excludes other graphics cards. CPU/GPU integration is the future and the GPU portion is really starting to catch up. You can't really expect Intel to make a new chip just for Intel because the Macbook Air is too small to take a dedicated graphics card.

It is marketing. Really, it is. It does piss off a very few customers, but to be honest, most customers of Apple have no idea they came out with a new one three weeks later. There are a few no matter what that will be pissed off when new models come out- but in the end it makes us come back to this message board and have more and more discussions about when IT will come out.

to the OP- a computer is not outdated when the new one comes out. a computer is outdated when it won't do what you need it to do....what YOU NEED it to do. Not necessarily what you WANT it to do. For some that might be having something like Thunderbolt for data management and for others it might be loading aol.com Anyway, you could always buy a cheap PC at Walmart (they have those in Wyoming right? I know I saw one on my way to Yellowstone to fish) Then you could sell it on ebay for cheap and invest in the newest MBA if you need the latest and greatest one. If not, buy one and have it shipped two day air- for a light MBA it can't cost that much really.

Good luck- you will NOT regret coming to the Mac side!

Come on you must be kidding me, $100 more expensive? Who cares? The Apple Store in Germany is like $600 more expensive. The store in Japan around $400. What do you think how I feel after I went abroad last week right on the day when the new Air was supposed to come out! I was so prepared to wait at the Apple Store in the morning and then head to the airport with it Just get it in China.

Depending on where you are in China, head to Hong Kong. Electronics in Hong Kong is mostly cheaper than in the US because of their currency and they do not have tax. Was calculating the other day where should i purchase a MBA and all points to hong kong being the cheapest.
