I think the question comes down to is "to create a lot of buzz" a marketing activity. While some people consider buzz creation to be marketing, you do not. You agree that Apple hasn't said anything in order to create a lot of buzz. The only difference is that you don't consider buzz-creation to be marketing while some other readers here as well as other business writers do.

Oh - and don't forget that everyone who thinks that buzz-creation counts as "marketing" (whether they approve of it or not) are to be seen as apple-fanboys... out-****ing-standing

They are just trying to artificially build hype. Personally, I was all geared to check out and possibly buy this generations MBA but because of this game they are playing I decided to go a different route.

I might buy a MB when they stop the games.

Be 100% assured that Apple is devastated by your decision. They're both shattered and gutted, and disoriented to boot.

Steve will probably be contacting you directly.

Never have I seen so much angst over what a company HASN'T said. Any hype created is your fault and yours alone.

Rather than waiting until the new release for the current used prices to drop, its happening prematurely due to people expecting a new model. It will save you money, and reduce your wait time, this should make you happy.

Which reconfirms that it isn't a "marketing" strategy...but a "business" strategy.

Agree 100%

Certainly Apple is happy about the "buzz" over the MBA and the new OS. But they are in the business of SELLING computers. All the inventory sitting on the shelves right now - they want to sell - RIGHT NOW. They don't want people who are looking to buy a notebook computer to be holding that money in their pocket for a month until the next notebook comes out.

Finally an informative posting which explains the point of view. Thanks :)

Apple is intentionally uninformative because they believe it is more profitable for them. Just like when they claimed that tons of revenue was potentially lost when someone actually found a prototype iPhone (aka, not playing their game). Not saying other companies don't do the same thing but Apple has by far perfected the art.

I am not sure why I really even wanted a Mac. Mostly because it would communicate better with one of our Mac servers here in the building. Other than that, I was already put off by Apples closed box system.

Yeah, the more I think about it the more I realize I dodged a bullet.

I actually work at a very distinguished marketing firm in Florida and what they're doing isn't a "marketing" strategy.

I see your Firm and raise you the 3th largest advertising, communications and marketing holding company in the world. :)

Hrm, think whatever you want. The only thing I like is their design, I can give them credit for that. Although, I don't know if I can do that anymore considering the iPhone 4. How do you spend millions or R&D yet fail to realize and antenna issue?

Ok, I am getting off topic to defend my stance so I will leave it alone. Have a nice day.

Pretty much every other company... Look at the Vaio Z21, LG P330, the Asus that will come out in September.

I'm actually more excited about the Z21 and the P330 right now. Last month I was ready to give Apple my cash for an Air refresh. Today I'm not so sure.

They did realize it. It's easier to just let it go, chalk it up to "users holding it wrong", and throw in some free, plastic bumpers that you later sell for 30 bucks.

It's called cutting corners and still making money. They do that a lot. People just don't see it.

Only if you factor in weight. The M11X kicks its ass all over the place.
You can get a faster than C2D i3 + better GPU and 8GB RAM for under $850
or an i5 + better GPU + 4GB RAM for $999

The Alienware is also tested better battery life than the current Air. Appearance depends on the person, and SSD/HDD depends on the need of the user, but pretending there aren't really and nice 11in competition is just wrong.

I said ultrabook category. The m11x is not a ultrabook. Do you even know what an ultrabook is?

Also the m11x is nothing more than a 13-14" laptop with a smaller screen. The weight of the m11x is equivalent to that of most 13-14" laptops.

Yes I have. I thought it would be better than the Macbook Air for a while (I assumed they would refresh the Air lineup after October of this year) but with the highly probable Macbook Air refresh this month I don't think it will be the case anymore.

There is no such thing as an ultra book category. I think you mean ultraportable.

If it is only $100 more expensive, why not just buy it there? You would probably pay $50 to have it express mailed to you here.

Honestly, the current MBA is a heck of a Mac too. Granted, Thunderbolt will be better on the new MBA and more storage and RAM standard sounds nice, BUT the current Nvidia MBAs are rocking when it comes to graphics vs. the Intel IGP. It is like two steps forward but a big step back too just to wait for the new ones.

I do understand about wanting the latest, but sometimes the latest doesn't actually produce results when anti-competitive actions like Intel made with its IGP/chipset make latest not all it's cracked up to be. I think many people may be better off wanting the 2010 MBAs for huge discounts on clearance vs. the new... whether they know it or not.

You just won't let it go, huh? :p
Well, that's fair enough, if graphics were important to me neither would I probably.
But for most people this new one will in fact be an upgrade, the GPU is rarely utilized to its fullest, and never so while doing "regular" work or other non-gaming activities.
