Great - thanks! I tried downloading the High Sierra installer, but I can’t get the App Store to give me the full version, so I’ll just try his Mojave patcher.

If you want Linux for that machine, give MX Linux a try. Very nice fully-featured desktop, good hardware compatibility and a great community.

I’ve recently installed openSUSE Leap 15 onto my MacBook Pro ( 2013 ) and all is working so may be worth a try of that.
openSUSE includes a fairly stock and not tweaked version of GNOME that seems to work well.
