what is decent internet speed.

Hello guys As a Comcast user here i wanted to know if the internet speed im getting is currently right for what Im paying. I have an 8mb speed as comcast advertises for 75 dollars and currently getting speeds of 25713kbps download and 2223kbps upload. Is this about right? and if not what alternatives do i have as far as providers are concerned.

At&T is not an option for i had them before and it was just plain pathetic.

any feedback would be great and appreciated

I have comcast and i'm working on wireless right now. I'm in Boston.

If it makes you feel any better, I pay $70 a month for an avg of 120kb a sec actual download and about 40kb/s upload....the speed tests will score something like 700kb/s download and 100kb/s upload though.

Hughes-net satellite is what I have. its either 17.99 a month for 56k dialup (28.8 tops here) or satellite. Oh there is the option to run cable back 2 acres from the road but the $3200 installation is a bit pricey:mad: I cant wait to move to an apartment with cable!!:D

Hughesnet is pretty shady with their bandwidth though, you can only download 380mb per day and if you go over they bump you down to 5-8 kb/s for 24 hours...I just did that last night on youtube:rolleyes: though I am up again lol.

I really don't know how I would handle myself with unlimited 25713 kbps :cool:

How come it says 1026 kb/s but when I download an update or anything I get 120 kb/s tops??

The test is measured in kilobits where as download rates are measured in kilobytes; there are 8 bits to a byte, hence the smaller number.

Yeah, I know what you mean about being out of range of anything broadband. Where I live cable won't even consider providing services, and dial-up usually tops out at 40k. Finally we decided to give Wildblue Satellite internet a try, and it's a hell of a lot better than what we had, but certainly not up to seriously high-speed stuff.



But, it's fast enough to DL music and even video. Bandwidth usage is on a rolling 30-day basis (17 gig DL, 5 gig UL) which is pretty good since there is no daily limit. So far, reliability has been fine (6 months.) At least now we get to wifi the homestead.

Exactly, its either super slow or pretty good :) And the websites today are horrible on dialup, especially bank sites. The thing that bugs me the most is the 1sec latency delay, then bam its up a rolling. I will definitely get 8/10 Mbps cable when I can!

OUCH...musta hit the FAP ? feels like a brick wall hugh? :) I recently it does come back gradually, and in 12 hrs it will be faster.

I used the FAP monitor to tell me when I was getting close, it also gives you a refill time on the bucket...used it for XP havent tried it on OSX yet.

Nope, no FAP. It's pretty much unusable when that's activated. I don't understand the upload speed though, it's extremely rare that I'm able to upload anything over 50 KB. Almost every time I try, I get disconnected.

$800 setup plus $100 a month and I often wish for Dial-Up.

Wow I would call tech support thats really slow. I was getting 450-500 Kbps download. Actual download speeds where around 100 KB/S on the basic plan, and Upload was around 30-40 KB/S. What signal strength do you have? from what they say it needs to be 35% to get the Home Pro plan and I get 50-60% signal. Also you should never get disconnected, A couple times I had to re-commission the satellite.

What plan do you have for $100 a month?
