After you use redsnow to downgrade you still have to connect the device to the computer and run the redsnow jailbreak.

custom firmware is not the same as jailbroken.

You can make a custom NO_BB firmware for 6.0 and in DFU restore with that in itunes.

that works but still doesn't fix my situation. a few ppl said the antenna cable could have come unplugged that's whats giving me these problems and it could probably explain why it always says searching.

Yes, but the cable unplugged wouldn't give you the -1 error in iTunes.

If you try to do a normal restore in iTunes and you get the -1 error and are unable to activate, this is a baseband hardware problem and there is little you can do about it unless you know a very good repair person that can reflow the baseband chip on the logic board.

can i do it myself

I suppose you can try.
Google "iTunes error -1" and "baseband reflow" and you may be able to find instructions.

Surprised everyone here has no idea what they're talking about. -1 is the error you get when you restore via stitched ipsw with shsh blobs attached. You need to restore, get that error and then you need to click recovery fix and put the device back into dfu mode (it should be in recovery) just hold the home button and power button until it turns off from recovery and release the power button but keep holding the home. Then redsn0w will kick it out of recovery and you should be all set. Good luck.
