Yeah, fair enough. I think we can all agree that we would've preferred the B2S promotion to have been the iPod Touch again. Then we could've all sold it and brought our overall costs down a little more. I guess we can't have it all. :(

Yeah, I'm guessing they finally realized that if they did that promo, people just used it as what you said - because if someone is buying a Mac, odds are they have either an iPad, iPod, iPhone, or all of the above, so I'm guessing it didn't reel in a bunch of unearned sales.

However, now with the $100, it's basically getting people onto the App Store. I am not a huge fan of that tactic, and I'd have much rather seen them do a $50-$100 credit toward an accessory if they really wanted to attract sales. It'd be really cool for them to throw in an extra charger for on-the-go or whatever, and the cost of something like that is about $5 to them. If I go in the app store and buy a Microsoft Product with the credit, Apple's cost on that deal is 70%.... but oh well, we can dream, ehh?

I got pretty excited when the news first broke about the gift card because I misread the title of the article and thought it was a $100 Apple Store gift card rather than iTunes. Being that this will be my first Mac, I'll need to purchase Office and $100 off would've been a nice discount. Too bad Office isn't downloadable through the App store, heh.

But hey, at least they're giving us something. I do appreciate the student discount. Anything helps.

Edit: I considered the Best Buy B2S program since they are offering a store gift card for $100, but without the Student Discount on the machine, it ends up being a wash for me. *shrug*

If you're a student I personally think Apple Store is the best place to get a new MacBook Air.

Advantages of the Apple Store are...
1. Student Discount
2. $100 AppStore promotion
3. If there's something wrong with the unit, you can get an exchange right away.

Disadvantages are...
1. You pay tax...somethings online retailers are cheaper than your student pricing plus tax. But $100 promotion makes Apple store a good deal around the summer break time.
2. Various configurations are not possible...however if you want the ultimate, Apple store will have it.

If you're getting stock or ultimate and you're a student, I think Apple store is the best place...if you want a perfect machine and don't want to deal with the hassle of exchanging it or returning it...Apple store is the place...

Other than Apple Store, Amazon has pretty good pricing once a new model is introduced (give and take a month) - not right away...and I believe they have pretty good return service.

I personally bought my MBP 15 from Apple.com and didn't like the waiting time and since mine was a lemon, I had to return it via mail and reorder another unit...it took me almost 3 weeks to get it right...

Not always the case. When the 11" air came out, the stores only stocked the 11" in 2GB for about a month. It was extremely annoying for me because I had to CTO the 4GB upgrade, which to me was a no-brainer.

Then it came, and it had a big scratch on the housing. Apple built a second one and shipped it without me first returning the first one. Their customer service is decent if you get the right person, but yeah, compared to walking in a store and out with a laptop, the website is a long process, hehe.

Apple only tend to keep standard configurations in stock in store. If you want to customise or "max out" things you need to buy from Apple online.

That's incorrect. I bought a "maxed out" MBA 11" from the Apple store. I also know of at least one other person who bought a "maxed out" MBA 13" from the Apple store also.

You just need to ask the rep and have them check in the back.

Yeah, not immediately on release though. Here at the flagship stores they got the "ultimates" in about 2 weeks later, and only occasionally.

I was in a store a week ago and they showed the Ultimate 13" config on the display info iPad next to all the Airs, so they certainly do carry more than just base configs. Stock levels and such may be another story.

You really should read, what part of "Yeah, not immediately on release though." did you not understand? That was released 10 months ago, and like I said, they carry them, it just takes a little time post-release.

Easy chief. I replied to the previous poster without refreshing the page, and thus didn't see your reply.

I meant to imply with my line about "stock levels and such" that they probably aren't readily available in volume/in time as the base configs are. We're on the same page.

The only advantage is that you walk out with it that day.

However, going into an Apple store is brutal. There are 35 workers with blue shirts on, and everywhere you look, they are pestering you.

I once tested it, and had 7 different employees come up to me within a 5 minute span while standing in 2 different spots. Its relentless.

Least you didn't have to use the "Request a Rep" feature on the iPad, hehe.

As obnoxious as it sounds, I kind of wish I had that problem sometimes in the store. My last 3 or 4 trips to buy things I've had to stand around and essentially camp an employee while they were talking to another customer just to get some help (this was prior to the new iPad displays). I stood around for 15 minutes to buy an iPad camera connection kit...

Yeah I second this sentiment. Every time I go in I wait for someone to be able to ring me up. It's usually a 10 to 1 employee to customer ratio... Hence why they installed the customer queue on the price tag apps on iPad. Usually it says 5-15 minutes whenever I go to the stores here in SF

I think you meant to say 1 to 10.

I generally purchase my Apple products either at the Apple Store... or the online Apple Store. One advantage is that if you buy Applecare at time of purchase... the sell you the pre-registered version.

In Oregon (as well as some other states), there is no sales tax.

Can you buy MS office for mac on the app store?

While an odd place ton ask that question, I don't believe so. You can buy the Apple (and possibly preferable option) equivalent and get Pages, Numbers, and Keynote(or only the ones you need) from the Mac App store though.

I like the store experience. I can be a rush shelling out this kind of cash.

It's nice having Apple kiss up to you, considering they are drawing blood. :D

Also, the last time I was a one they started in on some kind of cult hugging fit, that was freaky.

Love that stuff.

Wow. Being dramatic but it is pretty much te opposite in my area. Usually there are 2/3 employees that have their own table they have domain over. Then there are the floaters if you are at the software or accessory area that come up to you seemingly every 2 minutes, that you keep having to say your just browsing.

To the point where I will go to best buy over apple store so m not overly harassed.

What do I mean by harassed? This is when they pry to see what I do for a living to see if they can reach into my business life. Has happened the last 3 times ive purchased something with them. This one guy when I told him I worked in finance tried to get as far as to ask what was in my portfolio.

Most apple shoppers know what they want. Just get out of my way and let me make my purchase!
