I use and love a program called Socialite for my RSS feeds. You can use it with Google Reader, plus it acts as a Twitter client. It can read facebook updates, Digg stuff, and flickr. I like having everything centralized. I really just use it for Twitter and Reader though. If you like Instapaper, you can send articles that look interesting directly to it - I do that all the time.

It costs 20 bucks I think, but well worth it IMO. I don't have a link, but I believe it is made by Realmac Software, who also make some other good stuff.

google reader is king

I agree. Just use Fluid to turn it into a separate app window. I like it because since it's a webapp it keeps in sync on all my machines (MBP, desktop PC, iPhone). The UI is also very good IMO. Little wasted space.

I tried to like Socialite but its message view is just terrible. Even with the preview length at minimum a single RSS feed post takes way too much screen space and is much harder to read than the minimal one line ones in Google Reader. I also like how Google Reader shows the post below the title and not in a separate window.

I agree that the view on the RSS feed is bulky, but if you want a preview of the article, its okay. I like a preview, so it doesn't bug me. I am only looking at one headline at a time, and being able to just start at the top and work my way down keeps it organized, (for me, at least). Regarding showing the post below the title, Socialite does that...but I almost never read in RSS readers. I prefer having it open behind the window in my browser so that I can bookmark if I want.

What I also didn't like was the way read and unread items were shown. I like Google Reader's "new items - all items" style - if you want to read an old article you just either search for it or show all items. I often have articles that are older but I haven't gotten around to reading it. In Socialite I would have to dig them from between read items and since both methods (dim and dot) for marking read and unread items are a bit crap it makes for a worse read.

I would really like an app that combines Facebook, RSS feeds, possibly even Gmail under a single app but so far Socialite isn't doing it for me. It's fine for Facebook and possible Twitter (don't use it) but the RSS feed part seems half-baked.

I can see how the read/unread thing would get on some peoples' nerves. If they ever added Gmail support, it would be all over for me. I would have just one program on my dock. Now I am upset that it doesn't exist. Damn.

I totally hear you. That's exactly what I'd like to see too.

And yet another vote for Times - It has one of the best user interfaces I've ever seen (Steve Jobs could talk about how wonderful and magical it is, and he wouldn't be far off.)

I even emailed the developer to ask if they'd be porting Times to the iPad - talk about full of WIN...(no reply yet, btw.)

Ok, I'll bite...

Vienna, hands down. Smooth. Crisp. Customizable. Built-in browser. Supports plug-ins for Twitter, Facebook, Evernote, and others. And version 2.5's official release should be this coming week.

I'm glad it has nothing to do with the Google conglomerate. Pretty soon we'll all be wiping our arses with Google Toilet Paper. Don't let them take over everything, I say.

old dead thread but I have to say- google reader completely blows. It's in the stone age compared to netnewswire

Yep! Mail is gr8. Checking emails and RSS at the same time instead of having to open up another application or browser. The only problem I have with Mail is that it does not have an export function. I want it to export RSS to my iPhone!

I recently started using NetNewsWire instead of Safari and I like it a lot. Quick to sync via Google Reader from one Mac to another.

They finally released Times for the iPad maybe 2 weeks or so ago. LOVE IT. It's everything I would've expected from Times as an iPad app.

I think it's about $8 on the app store, and again, well worth it!

I can't recall why it stopped working, but I was unable to set up either PowerPC version of it (on 10.6 PPC) or Intel 1.5.4 on Catalina now (I kinda hoped it was Big Sur issue, and I got a Mac Mini with Catalina now, but no luck).

I'm sure that ELEVEN YEARS later this is still an issue.:oops::oops:
