I have one of these:


hanging off my MBP. Two ports are occupied by a mouse dongle (Logitech) and a USB-to-SATA adapter that I use for external 2.5" SSDs. Sometimes I have projects going that use USB to communicate with homebrew devices, and the other two ports are used for that. I've not had any issues with insufficient power, but I don't think I've ever had all four ports going at once.

The Lenovo workstation I'm currently using has a similar internal USB 3.0 port. It's a pin header normally for a 50-in-1 card reader, but if you don't order it, they have an option for a short dongle.
 
I use mine for my iLok dongle. I thought at first it was for MFA keys like Yubikey, but you need to physically press a button on those to get it to generate a response code
