What? There is a Core2Duo Mac comming out?! When, i plan to buy a new mac over the summer around july/august. Will it be out before then?

Depends - Some guys around here think it will be in the MacBook Pro by the end of August (Around WWDC) others think it may be later. Only the guys and girls at Apple really know...

Go to the right Apple store and get your self a open box Macbook pro 2.0 base for $400 off or a 2.0 with 1.5gig of ram and 256mb video card and be happy. That is what I did and I could never be happier. Very little whine, the heat is not to bothersome and the size is a delight.

unless you do graphical stuff, need a bigger screen and the expansion slot, i reckon go for the MacBook. It is an absolute ripper of a machine. It does everything i need, and more.

Uhh.. this is so hard! I have narrowed down my decision to portable computers only I think. I just have too much chance of having to bring it to work from time to time. I am trying to decide between a ThinkPad T60 with similar specs to the MBP or just going with the MBP. There is about a $600 difference so I'm tempted by the Thinkpad... so hard to choose!

You tried the PC only road before, remember!! My vote is for the MBP...

This is true! Actually, I'm running Beta 2 of Windows Vista on a separate partition of my Latitude D620 as I type this. I'm not all that impressed to be honest. I know it is just a beta, but usually public Betas are close to the final release. There is just too much eye candy eating up sys resources.

Also, is it possible for an Apple store to get in an entire bad lot of computers. I have noticed that both my macbooks that had problems and my roommate's macbook that whines and moos were all week 24 machines. Also, all the macbook pros on display that are screaming with the whine are the same week as well. Would I be better off ordering straight from Apple?

As a personally experience I had two open box macbook with no mooing or screen noise but I did have the normal wine. Maybe you can go to an apple store and check them out before you buy that particular model.

Finally I have arrived.....
Does anyone have any more comment on the newly purchased MBP? I am interested in getting the 15" model for my work as my current "outside duty" iBook has only 40 GB of HD (I have managed to keep 20 GB free so far as I am storing data on the external firewire Lacie Mobile drive).

I keep reading the whine, noise, and heat problems on various forums. Before I purchase my computers, I check on various forums so that I can hear what the other users are talking about the product I am interested in buying. So far, it appears the MBP and MB are having noticeable amounts of negative feedback.

So, what's the story with MBP with the most recent built?

I JUST got an MBP today for work. 2.0GHz. Came with 10.4.6.

And I'm sad to report, the whine is terribly annoying. Perhaps more so to me because I'm very sensitive to high pitched noises, and it's very high pitched, and it's massively annoying.

This is in an office with many, many, many noise computers and 2 desktop fans to move the heat around... I can still hear it whining away.

I just shut it down and started it back up, as soon as the LCD came on.. WHIIIIIIINNNNNEEEEE.

Annoying.

But I just discovered that it only whines on Max loudness if the brightness is maxed out. As soon as I turned it down 4 notches, the whine was inaudible to me.

I've not heard any "moo"ing.

my sister and I both have custom built 2.0 ghz 15" MBPs (1 GB RAM and glossy screen) coming either tomorrow or thursday, and I will let you know if they have whine/heat problems... i also shared your concerns, but after talking to many people who dont have any issues, my sister and I took the plunge. Remember that only the people with problems will voice their concerns, while the 98% of people with perfect MBPs arent saying a word
