I don't know, apparently a lot of people on this planet prefer carrying a bathroom tile in their pocket. It's ridiculous.
The only way it's comfortable to sit down with my 14 Pro in my pocket is when it's caseless, even that is cutting it close.

Maybe it would become less of a problem if I lacked any sort of self-discipline to put my phone away and notice life happening. Then it'd just be constantly glued to my hands and the pocketability aspect becomes moot??

Where will it end? Apple just released a mock-up of the iPhone 17. Three day battery!

I understand why they are moving to bigger screens, for a lot of people, the iPhone is their main "computer" these days, but that is why the Pro Max is so popular. If the motivation of offering 2 different screen sizes is so that users have a choice, it should be regular and XL, not big and bigger. 6.1 was a happy medium in 2024 (at least for me) but I do not want a Pro Max.

Unfortunately this is overshadowing my original topic of there not really being much of a tentpole feature that stands out like in years past, which is making me think about sitting out an upgrade for the first time in 13 years.

Pretty much anyone buying Pro Max is. And PM is the top seller.
That's definitely the only real objective thing that we can say.
If I was a company making phones and I see that most of my customer are buying the bigger model, I would understand only one thing : They like it more than the other models. So what can I do to make more sales? Follow what people wants and make it bigger. There is literally no other reasons behind.

And we can see it happening with the iPhone mini too which was a failure and replaced by... a Plus model.
If people actually wanted smaller phones, the regular pro and mini models would have done wayyyy better compare to their bigger sized alternatives.

The tentpole features are the 6.9-inch display, AI, and much larger 48MP UW sensor. You might not care about those, but that doesn't mean it's not a "tentpole" feature.

6.9-inch is larger than almost all Android phones on the market.

Some people couldn't care less about the notch/island, 5G, titanium, or USB-C.

Pretty much. The data says consumers want the biggest phone with the most cameras. Which is why it's confusing when some people suggest nobody is asking for foldables from Apple.

Foldables are not a solution if you want a "pocketable" phone. It might be smaller but gets massively thicker at the same time. And even more fragile if you might accidentally sit on it in folded state.

And for me, the "crease" at least I am seein on every foldable so far would drive me nuts! I want my screen to be nice and plain, without visible dents, creases and folds. Just my opinion.

Your information are pretty outdated.
So if we talk about how fragile they are, I think sitting on it is definitely the last thing you would have to worry about, especially folded. we are talking about a phone with basically double the rigidity of a normal phone... you would have to fold double the battery, frame and screen. If you want to see how strongly they resist folding (haha) I would suggest you to see the "tests" from Jerry Rigs Everything.

As for the thickness... well that's also very old news.
Most of the high end foldable nowadays are about 12mm (+/- 1mm) thick which is about 4mm thicker than a regular iPhone Pro (8.25 mm camera bump excluded). And some foldable like the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 goes down to 9.47mm folded which is barely different from the thickness of a regular phone. So yes they may be slightly thicker but "massively"? definitively not.

And finally the "crease" while still being present, is definitively so small on modern phone that you will really have to look for it. And I'm pretty sure that by the time Apple decide to release their model they will manage to make it as nice and plain that people like you will not find something to say about it :)

The only world in which Apple makes a foldable, I think, is one where they can figure out how to make the folding display out of actual glass. Or at least make it like 90% glass and use plastic for the folding bit.

There's something incredibly cheap feeling about a phone with a plastic touchscreen to me, not even to mention the atrocious durability. I don't want to constantly mind my.. freaking fingernails to prevent them from damaging my $2000 phone. And I'd also perhaps like to keep it past 2 years without it looking like a dog's chew toy.
The crease may be small initially, though still very much noticeable, but you're kidding yourself if you believe it remains that way 2 years down the line.

And thickness is not old news. The foldables are all thick as a brick. It being 2-4mm thicker is a huge difference for pocketability - you know, the aspect which MOBILE phones were meant to excel at.

The issue I have with foldables, is that when they open the operational size BIG. The purpose of folding phones is get even a larger tablet in your hand. I still want something I can use single handed. If I wanted a tablet, I would just buy an iPad.

in one way its good if there is no headline feature. We will get the best iteration of that product. Best example i could think off are the iphone 6s series and may be iphone 13 series . i genuinely think they are best products at their time without much design change.

I have been asking for an increase from 6.1". I have felt that 6.1" was a little too small so the 6.3" should be great. What I didn't ask for was the flat sides, we need rounded sides again.

Apple needs to offer like six different phones between all the sizes and sides. It is impossible for any company to make all their customers happy with limited choices like we have now.
If they have too many options, it becomes confusing but also costs Apple more money to maintain more SKUs.

X75 Qualcomm Modem And WiFi 7 are enough for me I might get good signal at Disney Orlando.
also before Apple screws everything up with its own proprietary Gen1 Modem.

As of now its rumored that only the SE and Ultra Thin iphones next year will get the Apple modem, so if you buy any of the other 17's you should still get Qualcomm.

Tandem OLED on iPhone?

Actually, this could be it. Tandem OLED is supposedly more efficient than single-layer, plus they get even brighter. It's not like it increases thickness too much either - M4 iPP is super thin with it.

Alternatively, better anti-reflective glass would be killer. S24U with it looks incredible.

I'm just hoping we don't go back to shiny sides.

Not committing to using their new homegrown modem in their Pro models is not an encouraging sign.

My guess is the surprised features will just be geared towards better Apple Intelligence support. They'll probably tack on some more NPUs, or something of design tweak to make LLMs more efficient, and marketing it as some amazing feature.

Either way, my 13 Pro's battery hit 80% of it's design capacity, and I was down to less than 10% by 3pm in NYC (and I needed my phone to Uber us out of the city around 9pm. Thankfully someone brought a charger), so I'll have to replace it this fall.

Right. Thick is almost as bad as big. Neither is good for those carrying a phone in their pocket.

I think the headline features will be the bigger screen size, Apple Intelligence, and the faster charging speeds. This could be presented with a tagline like “Always Ready” focusing on some of the minor features that make the phone quick and capable.

Honestly, the ecosystem approach will probably be the focus— new phones, watches, AirPods, and probably something like an AppleTV/HomePod [mini?] update (Apple intelligence capable of course).

I use Wifi 7 at home, so that will be a welcome feature on the next iPhone. Maybe not a headline feature, though.
