Ok I'm sorry but this ad is just cringeworthy. And Microsoft's focus on keyboard is odd since the touch and type keyboards are not included with a Surface purchase, AND, there are a number of high quality keyboards for iPad. Seems like Microsoft is way too obsessed with iPad. If they really think Windows 8 tablets are superior then focus on your own product, not iPad.

Apple's ads were light hearted and fun. These Microsoft ads are just sad.

The only bad thing I would say about MS' recent bevy of commercials is that they're kinda boring. The Nokia phone ads were really good and funny, but these? Eh. Bland.

As for the whole "they're attacking muh Apple" angle? Who cares? They're commercials. Like has been mentioned above, they're not any better or worse than the Mac vs. PC ads Apple aired back in the day. Well, these are maybe a little less smug, but really...not much different overall.

Are there any keyboards for the iPad that are similar to the one for the Surface? I haven't looked around for a while, but when I did I just couldn't find anything that wasn't awkward and thick. So if there are - I'd like one :)

No they're still awkward and fat but they're made for iPad so they're AOK with everyone. The attractive thin ones made for the surface are pretty silly of course.

If all you can get are keyboards that end up working worse than the on-screen, you might as well not have a keyboard at all.

since that's not the case, I don't know where exactly you are trying to go with this. It might surprise the uninformed Microsoft crowd, but besides having decent keyboard covers like the Logitech ultra slim etc., you can attach a Bluetooth keyboard, so how the hell can it be "all you can get are worse than on screen".. wow... just wow...

Again, it's misleading and sad that they assume that the clients are too stupid to know that there are tons of third party keyboards out there. you won't be able to apply a spin that will change this. thanks.

There are good ones around. I use a zagg cover which I'm very happy with, but it's a matter of taste, I found the surface dirt mat pretty disgusting, haven't tried the other one.

Every keyboard I've tried, even the Apple bluetooth, was inferior to the Type Cover.

And I type faster with the iPad on screen than all of them. :|

Is there any evidence that consumers like negative advertising? Did the Mac versus PC ads really increase Mac sales that much?

But these ads aren't saying that iPad keyboards are inferior, they're giving the impression keyboards don't exist for iPad. Also if Microsoft is so focused on tablets needing a keyboard to be useful, why are their Surface keyboards an expensive accessory? Why aren't the keyboards included with the purchase of the tablet?

That may well be but it's irrelevant (and I don't care how good or bad the surface type cover is compared any existing bluetooth desktop keyboard - which you can hook up to the iPad).

Back to the original point - the ad makes it sound like there are no keyboards available for the ipad, doesn't it?

Quite right.

It's mildly dishonest at best. Usually you'll have to actually look for iPad keyboards in another aisle. I would have rather they pointed out that their keyboards are generally better.

I don't think the positive or negative messages matters, so long as it's memorable. Regardless of what you thought about the content of the Mac vs. PC ads, they did at least stick in your head. These? They're...well...they're space filler.

Would anyone but a fanboy be upset by these commercials? If my choice of wording cheapens the argument for anyone, they're not receptive to the argument no matter how it's worded - or they're too emotional invested (i.e. fanboys), this proving me right...

I don't watch much TV, but even so have been repeatedly assaulted by that ad for the MS tablets that features a pudgy smug bearded ginger "teacher" extolling the Windows tablets.

The very first thing he says is, "It's got Windows," as if that's a good thing. Or even a salable thing.

Microsoft seems oblivious to the fact that the mad rush to the post-PC world is propelled by Windows' bloat, fragility and complexity. Trying to sell a tablet by proudly pointing out it "has Windows" is like trying to sell a vegan main course by chirping about how it has blood sausage and sliced liver.
