I think a 7" tablet is a terrible idea, whether it be an iPad or any other company's product.

If Apple came out with a 7" tablet, it would be the next biggest thing. Face it, right now if Apple slaps their logo on anything, people will buy it regardless of how good it actually is.

I don't see the point of them. I have a smartphone. Why would u want to walk around with a 7" smartphone that's not really a phone in your coat pocket.
What's the point of a tablet if you can't create documents. I don't want to type my school paper on a 7" screen. The only advantage a 7" tablet gives you is comfortable two thumb typing, something I can do with my iPad in it's vertical position.

Do you realize all that actually applies to your iPad? Well, except for the fact that you need a bag for iPad while a 7" device (like an ereader) can still fit in a coat pocket.
Anyway, if Apple would have come first with the 7" model, and these guys would be making the 9" one, you would be saying the exact opposite. But that's what you have to do when you are an Apple fanboy, haven't you?

I have iPad and it's 9.7 inch display. I think 7 inch is just too small...
What do you all think?

I think it's a waste personally, but that's only MY opinion of what I would do. 7" is too large to carry in a pocket, and if I'm carrying something in my hand might as well full screen it. The current ipad is almost the perfect size, I'd even carry it if it was 1-2" larger. Other than that though I'd have my phone, which fits into my pocket. 7" is just approaching the size of my phone too much, but loses the in-pocket portability.

I understand all you say and yes apple would have to change icon sizes and revamp the keyboard a bit, but thats no big thing.

Actually if Apple would fix the flaws of the first ipad, and made it a little lighter that would make me happy as well.

I don't want to belabor this, but this means that ALL apps have to be rewritten. Everything for the iPad assumes a certain number of pixels and assumes a certain physical size. That's why I'm saying this is a big deal.

I've heard this argument a lot, and I think it fails for one simple reason... Apple doesn't just slap their logo on any crappy thing.

The reason people will go out and buy products with an Apple logo is they know if Apple makes something, its almost always very high quality. At least for me, I'm not buying Apple products just to have a little Apple logo on the case, but because I trust Apple products and know they are not going to be putting out crap just to make a few extra bucks.

However, Apple isn't perfect, and has made some mistakes in products. But, the overwhelming majority of Apple products are high quality, well thought out pieces of technology. That's why people buy them! Of course, some people will buy Apple for a status symbol, but that's the minority I think, and they don't represent most of us Apple buyers.

I understand what you are saying but I disagree with your end conclusion. You retain ipad1 compatibility by keeping the resolution the same. The majority of the apps would be fine, including games. The UI would have to change, and maybe some apps would need to be tweaked for optimal results, but it would be nothing like iphone compatibility mode on ipad (although it would make that mode look alot better hehe)

That's simply not the case. The iPad and the iPhone 4 have similar screen resolutions, but the user interface elements have to be completely different to support the different form factors.

This is what I've been trying to get across. Adding a 7" tablet would have a huge impact on developers and I can't see any of them being happy about it.

You didnt see where I said the UI would have to be tweaked or what?

Huge impact? No more of an impact than adding the ipad and/or iphone 4 to the family. Probably less. As far as the developers, where are they going to go? Its not like a majority of apps are converted to ipad anyway. I am still waiting on slingplayer and skype to get their acts together. Once again iphone compatibility mode would look much better on a smaller tablet.

In any case, we shall see what Apple decides to do, and if they do release a 7", what the ramifications are.

So what you are saying is ..... Apple could release yet another device, with yet another screen size, which would demand the re-writing of all applications to support the new form-factor.

I wish I could bet on this not happening.

a 7" tablet could go to the 400g range, pretty much eliminating weight issues. Would certainly be a little smaller than the current iPad but not by much, and for the in-between tasks that I use the ipad for anyway I would welcome this change in form factor. If the 1024x768 resolution is kept there'd be no need to rewrite any apps.

No, you are missing the fundamental issue. If the resolution is kept the same then the finger sized button you need to press is now half the size and you end up pressing two buttons. There would be no choice but to rewrite apps.

This is difference between touch devices and computers. With a mouse it doesn't matter the number of physical pixels in an inch. But on a touch device this is fundamental to using it. That's one of the reasons Apple has succeeded in this area versus competitors. They get this. If they were to make a 7" device (which I doubt) it's certain that apps will need to be rewritten to use it unless they use scaling for iPhone apps. But existing iPad apps would certainly not work correctly.

Not sure about others but I like the almost paper size screen to be able to read PDF's nicely without having to contantly zoom in and out on a 7inch. 9.7" is the way to go.
