Yes, I am referring to when it wakes up from deep sleep.

Thank you. I'd ignore the other two who seem to take issue with someone inquiring as to what Apple means by "instant on" when the product is not instantly on.

Read again what I wrote.

At no time did I take issue with your questioning Apple's definition of "Instant on". Six seconds is not even close to instant on.

I simply questioned your definition of ordeal. And I thought I did it in a light-hearted way.

I guess not.

Does yours come on within a second after deep sleep? In other words, after a whole night of not using it? Mine does not. It takes about 6 seconds to be fully operational. However, as I noted before, it may be due to the fact that I have a screen saver and a password with that screen saver, which I have to enter every time I close the lid. Nevertheless, if I had to guess, I don't remember the computer being any faster when it didn't have that enabled.

I don't think you get 'instant on' after deep sleep. Mine is only instantaneous if it plugged it or if it was on within the previous hour (and that suits me just fine). I actually wished it moved more quickly to deep sleep.

I should have used another word. No hard feelings.

I was just wondering, in all honesty, what Apple meant by instant in because in my situation when I open my MBA from a deep sleep, it is not instant. That is all.

Within an hour of use, it's about 1 second on mine. Beyond an hour it's 5 seconds or less, a teeny-tiny price to pay for the awesome sleep time which is effectively infinite in real terms, assuming you use the mba practically every day. Much better than every previous laptop I've had/own, my mbp will drop 20% if I leave it unplugged for 24 hours.

If you have Parallels or Vmware it will kill your deep sleep. Ever since I got mine installed, Deep Sleep does not work as advertised.

In what way does it do that? Does it not go to Deep Sleep at all after 1 hour? Or does it just take longer to wake from sleep?

I'm a bit worried about this, planning to get the MacBook Air and definitely need VMWare on it. I don't really mind if it takes longer to wake up, even something like 30 seconds. But I would like to be able to put it in Deep Sleep mode for several days, preferably with VM's opened.

It behaves like any mbp

no deep sleep after 1 hour. Battery drains in sleep just like regular mbp

Something might be causing that. It's supposed to go into deep sleep after 70 minutes. If you are running a virtual machine through Parallels or Fusion that could prevent it from entering deep sleep. If so, try shutting down the VM.

I have quite frequently closed the lid on my Rev D without the battery connected at night. I'll open it a the next morning and the battery will be within a percent of where it started the night. Even after a full day disconnected it will be within 2 percentage point.

Note that I think Jim Kirk is speaking only about the Air's behavior if the VM is actually running. I fire up Parallels Desktop only if I'm using it. Otherwise, it's off. Parallels leaves some background processes running, but they definitely do not prevent the Mac from entering deep sleep.

jeez

I have 2 mb airs and a mbp.

I definitely know the difference between regular sleep and deep.

The 11 deep sleeps the 13 does not. I have tried both parallels and vmware and they both cause the laptop to not deep sleep.

It does not matter if the vm is running or not.

I think it is an issue with kext or driver.

There should not be all these variations. I use mine in bed off battery every night, shut the lid when finished, open in the morning and the screen is instant on with battery % just about the same.

Not sure if the cursor is instant, but it is active by the time I click an icon. I use the default settings for everything as were set by Apple except for Coolbook.

Try turning off your screen saver & password. Myne is near your stated 6 seconds, when using a password. Its much faster without. The "instant on" is assuming the stock configuration (no screen saver or password). Having a password has always made waking up take longer for me even on a MBP.
