Both brothers and I ate out; what a seasonal cliché - turkey and ham in an excellent restaurant.

Sounds wonderful, last year we went with Mom and a couple of close family friends to an excellent Punjabi restaurant after similar events. This was in Abbotsford BC which has one of the largest Sikh populations outside India.

Not dinner, breakfast if anything.

Experimenting with potato stacks.

Last night we had our delayed Solstice dinner, (the perils of having a teenaged daughter with a birthday 2 days before Solstice, with friends who want to throw her a party). Made a rib roast, baked Brussels sprouts and garlic mashed potatoes with Irish butter as the topper. Also had a great chocolate pie for dessert. There were no leftovers. I guess that's a good sign!

Tonight's repast was something simple. Fired up the grill to a ripping hot temp and grilled some ahi tuna steaks. Served them with medium grain white rice and Japanese eggplant pickles. For dessert we finished off the last pieces of chocolate pie from last night.

Looks delicious. How were they?

Thank you. They were good and easy to make. I’d like to try adding a little onion powder between the slices while building the stack, but it’s tricky. The starch is all that holds them together while frying. I might end up with nothing more than square potato chips. Haha.

If you're going to go for onion powder I am going to suggest you make your own. Get some dehydrated onions in the spice aisle and grind them yourself (I usually use my mortar and pestle for it, but you can use a coffee grinder, too). It makes a world of difference in the taste. Much better than the pre-ground stuff they sell in the bottles! And the dehydrated onions will keep a lot longer, too!

I tried this last night and it was an improvement. It did result in a few square potato chips but that was a mishandling mistake on my part.

In a coffee shop.
Potatoes Boulangère (potatoes sliced very thinly and layered with thinly sliced layers of onion and garlic, the lot cooked in stock), and artisan garlic sausages.

A robust Portuguese wine to wash down.

Fish and chips (and salad) for me, while my brother had roast lamb and mashed potato; we ate out yesterday evening in a place - a restaurant that is over 60 years old - that we used to occasionally frequent (the kind of place we were brought to for birthday treats or other celebrations as children).

Soothing comfort food and very welcome, too.

Knowing that we - my brother and I - were (and are) a bit down, and somewhat saddened, a friend of the carer (her closest friend, who also works as a carer), materialised at our door with several Filipina noodle dishes, so that we would have something tasty to eat.

How kind and sweet and thoughtful and caring is that?
