Apple Mighty Mouse

So I was wondering, since my iMac arrives tomorrow (fairly new to Macs), would I be able to replicate the up/down & sidetoside screen scrolling functionality of the Mighty Mouse, using say my Logitech or dare I say it, Microsoft Inteli-mouse? (both notebook size = small)

Both mice have a button function on the scroll wheel, whereas if you push the wheel down it switches to allow you to scroll up and down the page, just by move the mouse itself, not the scroll wheel.

I was wondering what functionality you can configure on a Mac's mouse-controls?

It really depends on the driver for the mouse. I don't know about the Logitech (don't have one) but the Intellimouse driver for the Mac is quite good. If you don't still have the CD for your MS mouse, I'm sure you can download the Intellimouse driver from Microsoft's website. It'll allow you to completely configure the mouse, and even create different configurations for different applications. Horizontal scrolling does work on my Intellimouse Explorer (it has the scroll wheel that rocks side to side). There are a lot of Mac users that really like Microsoft's mice (myself included).

All that said, right now my favorite mouse is the Mighty Mouse. A lot of people don't seem to like it much, but not me. IMO, it has by far the best scrolling mechanism of any mouse I've used. Right clicking is perfectly natural for me. I've always liked the feel of the Apple Pro Mouse, and the Mighty Mouse is the exact same size and shape.

I really like the logitech mx510-- I missed out on CompUSA having it for an awesome deal at $9.99 after MIR. Sigh. So for now I'll stick to my wired Apple mouse (occasionally I'll use my Apple BT mouse).

I'm going to have to say Logitech MX700. It's the cordless version of the MX500/510. I have the MX510 as well for my PowerBook (because the MX700 requires a power outlet nearby for the cradle) and I think these are the most comfortable mice out there, and also some of the most stylish.

The MX700 matches the PowerBook silver really well--but my MX510 is a darker, textured silver, which is why I have a grudge against it (I'd bought it assuming it would match my PB just as well).

I like my trackpad ...

But my favorite mouse was the Logitech MX 310.
It was nice, small, had just the right amount of buttons.

I like Apple mice, but one button doesn't work across OS boundaries that well.
Right-click is more of a necessiry in other OSes.

I wouldn't buy another Logitech mouse. Had problems with my MX700 mouse. They sent a LX700 as a replacement. You buy a nice mouse, they send you a crap mouse as a replacement, thanks Logitech.

I have that one too. It works great also, but i am constantly changing its batteries(good thing i bought re-chargeables)

Really? My batteries come from my digital camera when they haven't got enough guts to power it anymore - then I stick them in the mouse and it'll work for at least 3 months still.

On a new set of duracells its been about 6 months before a swap was needed!

With my PowerBook, I use a Logitech V500. It doesen't have all the features I want, but it's nice, and portable. @ home, the iMac gets a Logitech KB/M combo, the Cordless Elite Duo (I think that's what it's called, discontinued). I have been using a Apple keyboard with my Powerbook, and am starting to like it better than my Logitech. Thinking about getting the Bluetooth apple KB/M for the iMac..

Hook me up with that so I can plug it right into the ADB port on the side of my PowerBook G5.

Eh? Whaddya' talkin about there, ya young snot? ADB? In my day, we used SERIAL PORTS. And we liked it, too. Naw, none of that round serial crap. Good, old, RS-232! Hah! And we knew what those little pins did too, eh, none of that round serial or "ADB" nonsense...

I really like the Mighty Mouse. I think that Apple likes it to because they are packing it with every new iMac.

Danksi, did you get the old iMac or the new updated one with the better screen, PCI Express graphics, Radeon X600, SuperDrive standard, 1.9 or 2.1GHz G5, and DDR2 RAM?

am I the only one that thinks it would be smart for steve jobs to make a fricken blue tooth mouse with a scrolly thing? Mighty Mouse is getting closer, but god, how much enginuity would it take to do something that would satisfy so many people.

When I saw the mighty mouse, I have to admit, I laughed. Steve finally stepped up and made a two button scrolling mouse but forgot to make it wireless. :p

I love the Logitech MX 1000. I has a micros*** wireless one before, but the MX1000 is the best, no contest.

I have a Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 and it's excellent. It fits my hand perfectly and I love the location of all of the buttons.

Based on the packaging it's the Rev.B.

It's sitting in the hallway unopened. I've arranged for Apple to take it back - so I can order the new version.

It's a toss up though, since they offered CDN$400 refund instead, which I could use towards increasing the RAM to 1.5Gb total and perhaps an external DVD burner - for not much more than I expected to pay for the original unit.

iSight isn't much good to me since it's fixed - I need a 'moveable' webcam so I can move it to different positions (basically showing Kids to Grandparents!)

Front row is interesting, but the machine will be in the office, not the living room and I can use the mouse/keyboard when watching movies etc..

.. comes down to the extra CDN$200-300 to upgrade a newer model's memory to 1.5Gb total - as a 2Gb chip is WAY too expensive (CDN$800+) for what I need.

They haven't invented mine yet. I think it'll be gyroscopic, of all the pointing devices I've used, gyroscopic was the best... but it only works well on large, projected displays. At work I use a Trackman Wheel (below), it's a thumb trackball, and it works OK. I find since my hands are very large (snicker) using conventional mice hurts my wrist and palms very quickly. I do like the Pro mouse because it's so big, and ironically the hockey-puck because I could drive it with one finger.

Interesting. I use this trackball with all of my computers. I guess I got used to it playing FPS games.
