What is your primary email service?

I'm curious which email service is most popular among iOS users. I'm debating between using Gmail (more features for me) or iCloud (more seamless to me) and just want second opinions.

Edit: I actually don't know how ActiveSync works, so I just paired it with Hotmail.

I used to have two gmails and a Comcast, and now that iCloud is here, I have both of the auto-forwarding everything to iCloud.

You should put a poll in there. I use iCloud, but I also use Gmail and have it's mail forwarded to iCloud. Honestly, the iCloud is just for posterity and ecosystem.

I used to use MobileMe, but when iCloud didn't allow you to use a third party alias, I went ahead and picked up a subscription to Office 365. I have to say that I like it better than anything else, but it does cost $6 a month. Still, hosted exchange and a few other features it throws in are well worth the money to me.

reason I ask, I was looking into this at one time to host my own email, but the software is expensive. I ended up hosting on google apps.

I run my own IT consulting company, so I run it at home. I am a Microsoft Partner and as such can purchase the Microsoft Action pack which costs around $499 US. Its a yearly subscription and lets you use software in your business; you get software that is valued at around $20,000.00, so you get Exchange with 10 licenses, Server 2008R2 with 10 licenses, Windows 7 Pro with 10 licenses, Office 2010 with 10 licenses and a whole lot more. You can't sell the licenses, give them away or let clients use them, they are for internal use only, but its a fantastic deal and allows someone like me to use the software.

Very nice. I run Windows home server 2011 (which I believe is based on server 2008 kernal). I have a couple of webpages I run off it as well, using IIS. I used to run it off WHS V1, I much prefer 2011. Maybe someday I will give an exchange program a go. Would be nice to learn....though it does seem that even large companies aren't even running their own exchange anymore.

I really want to use my MobileMe again, though.

Many companies have outsourced their infrastructure to data centres where they still run Exchange, others have outsourced their email to companies that offer hosted Exchange services. Many smaller to mid size companies still use Microsoft Small Business Server which includes Exchange and many companies made the jump to Google Apps.

Exchange is a pretty sophisticated server program but its not impossible to learn. With virtualization solutions being readily available now from VMWare, Microsoft or Citrix, its easy to setup a few servers and play around without it impacting anything. I run my environment in VMWare, both production and testing, makes things very simple.

I've been using them since it was in beta, but for the past few months I've had nothing but screw ups.

Lost files from my paid storage account, other files were empty, randomly deleted email, randomly removed email tags...they had no explanations, or solutions. Thus, I walked.

Same here. i got into it when Apple once and they said I can't merge my 2 accounts, I told them it's the same one (technically, it is). I can sign in with my gmail account (iTune account) or my .me also. I hope they fix this soon because they are basically telling us "use iCloud, but you'll can't change the iTunes log in to it, so you'll have to keep you old email as well"

Had Gmail fetch my Verizon accounts and forward all, including Gmail, to iCloud. Got very difficult keeping track of 8 accounts, so I simplified and eliminated Vz and Gmail, although those are still open just to be sure I have all important stuff on the new address. So far, iCloud has been excellent with email, contacts and calendar. Very happy with it.

Exactly. I want to roll with my me.com email address, but that expired so I went to Gmail. Now that it's free I want to use it again (obviously), but they're saying it can't be done.

Has anyone heard anything about merging Apple ID's and it being possible some day?

iCloud. Works fine for me, haven't had an issue yet. I've had it for quite some time so everyone knows when I'm out of the office to fire one to this email as well, since my military email can't be accessed from anywhere except a DND terminal...
