ExchangeMyMail is another great hosted exchange service. I've been using them since 2007 without any problems.

Gmail, it used to be hotmail but having one Google account for everything was just easier

Im considering some even paid service - Im really concerned about privacy and I dont think Google is company I can trust (search, plus, emails). They just know too much about me in these days. Any tips?

Thanks,

Tom

Something like bluehost.com is what I used to use. Personal domain, tons of storage space, the RoundCube HTML5 webclient wasn't bad 5-6 years ago and it's probably only gotten better. You can play around and setup all sorts of custom PHP stuff for yourself.

I have my own private domain and an exchange which I push to my iPhone and PC at home. I pay ~£7/month for the privilege and it's well worth it. I dislike using generic @emailprivideraddress as my email address is used for both private and more professional uses.

I am also concerned (as others have posted) about the security of free services, especially with the larger companies in this day and age of hack-attacks.

Moved to iCloud as primary after Google's latest shenanigans. I just don't feel like they're moving in the right direction for consumers, and I don't think my data is safe with them anymore. Of course my email needs are not very complex, so the more basic approach of iCloud is just fine for me. It's been a couple of months, and so far everything has been smooth. iCloud is pretty reliable as far as I'm concerned.

What are you specifically looking for in a pay email service? Some suggestions are in this very thread.

And exactly that's what Im going to do instead of paying for some service. I have multiple domains hosted, even one used on google apps and I better move my email to a provider.

Yop. I've walked it through and end up on running emails on custom domain and hosting.

Thanks.

To be honest, I'm kind of surprised at the number of people who said they were happy with iCloud. I wonder if those people use multiple iOS devices. The fact that iCloud can't keep badge counts updated across devices (is that ActiveSync?) is a dealbreaker for me.

I'm curious which email service is most popular among iOS users. I'm debating between using Gmail (more features for me) or iCloud (more seamless to me) and just want second opinions.

Edit: I actually don't know how ActiveSync works, so I just paired it with Hotmail.

I have my email spread over several accounts:

* Comcast - VERY personal email, only close friends/family get that address, no
commercial ties.

* Yahoo - The Workhorse: use this for casual email/friends/buying items/getting bill
notices on the 'Net. My oldest address on the 'Net and a good spam filter
to catch the junk.

* Gmail - Used for Travel related items, booking flights/hotels etc

Hotmail/Me accounts used in the rare instance when items don't fit the above. The me address has NO commercial ties to it.

I actually have, well, numerous email accounts all for different reasons. I mainly use my Gmail account. Previous to that was a Yahoo account but with all the dumb changes they made to it, it started looking and working like crap for me. I also use my iCloud/Me.com address for more personal stuff whereas the Gmail account is where I get all my paperless bills and such sent to. My hotmail account I've had for over 15 years and that thing gets pummeled with SPAM hourly.

iCloud for personal.
Gmail for contacting online. (Devs, Twitter friends if needed, forums)
And Yahoo for most online things (rewards, random services, online orders)

Have all on my phone, so i may not care about them all all the time, they're all checked regularly.

Webhosting is one thing, but email is different.

If you want push email on iOS, I only know of five choices:

  1. Microsoft Exchange-based hosting.
  2. iCloud
  3. Hotmail
  4. Gmail
  5. Yahoo
Seriously, that's it. Everything else is either IMAP or POP3, and you probably want to avoid POP3 like the plague. Neither supports push (while IMAP can support push, iOS doesn't support it).

Of course, if you don't care about push, any IMAP-based email will work.

For a comparison of email access methods in iOS, see, "iOS email recommendations", in the macrumors wiki.

There are lots of exchange-based providers, but one of the better ones is Microsoft's office365. While it's not free, a basic email-only account is $4/month (per account):

  • You get 25GB of mailbox space per account. Other exchange providers only give you 2GB or less.
  • You can use your own domain name for email. You must, however, know how to futz with MX records.
  • It supports server-side mail filtering rules. While the rules aren't as complex/rich as gmail's, and does not support tags, they're decent. The rules do support categories, but I don't know how iOS supports this, if it's supported at all.
  • Contacts can be organized into contact groups, and you can see these contact groups in iOS. (google sync doesn't support contact groups.)
  • You get calendars. You can create multiple calendars and sync them with iOS.
  • Tasks get synchronized as iOS reminders, with some issues and limitations.
However, it's not perfect. Perhaps, the biggest issue is that password aging is enabled, and I don't think they really make this clear when you sign up. Not only do they not tell you that your password is about to expire (they suggest manually adding a calendar reminder), unless you use the webmail interface, but you get locked out of your account until you change your password (once your password expires). While you can supposedly turn off password aging, you have to use windows-only arcane command-line software. (For those of you who think you can use Wine: no, you can't. You don't use cmd.exe -- you use the windows powershell, and you have to install windows powershell extensions.) Talk about user-hostile.

Yes same for me

Just can't get passed the fact that I read and delete an email on my mac, and its still there as unread on my iPhone

So its Gmail all the way for me

Same here. i got into it when Apple once and they said I can't merge my 2 accounts, I told them it's the same one (technically, it is). I can sign in with my gmail account (iTune account) or my .me also. I hope they fix this soon because they are basically telling us "use iCloud, but you'll can't change the iTunes log in to it, so you'll have to keep you old email as well"

Would like to have @me as first but have double account problems so I have to stick with gmail.

I've tried many, but found Gmail remains the best. Having used it since it was an invite only service, it's evolved into a stellar mail service.

Concurrently I've been using MobileMe prior to iCloud, but the narcissistic image that "@me.com" paints is just too egocentric and disgusting for my tastes, I refuse to use it.

iCloud? If they would have given us @iCloud.com, I'd have no objection to that and would use it immediately.

However, when Apple refuses to listen to customers, they cannot provide what we desire.

I have been using Rackspace for several years (and its 2 previous incarnations). Bullet-proof reliability and support is outstanding:

I went from Gmail (contacts, calendar and email) to iCloud, once it was available. Before I did that, I was working with the two together. My Google data ended up with a blank calendar, a total disaster in contacts (old, deleted, duplicated data), and an increasingly less-secure email delivery system.

I agree with other posters that Google has thrown it's customers "under the bus" in the reach for profits with compromised personal privacy to such an extent I don't want to do any more than use it's search engine... and that's even questionable.

I've been very happy with iCloud email, contacts and calendar ever since I took the time to shift everything over. It was that or spend the same amount of time to fix all the Google issues.
