Prometheus lifted my hopes way up there and then crashed them down (Covenant), laughing at me the whole way... although I was braced for disappointment, and I got what I expected, after reading some reviews prior to seeing.
He really did not want to launch into a new chapter for this franchise, engineers their motivations, our possible interaction with them. He just poured black goo on them and said "forget them, I want to keep retreading spring loaded mandibles..." 👎
I feel Scott wanted to make an Ancient Aliens film, however even with his clout he couldn't get it off the ground so rolled it up in the Alien universe. He should have stuck to his guns as Prometheus was an interesting offshoot and deserved a sequel. Covenant is just a pile of garbage acted out by planks of wood, but it looks pretty...
As for the Black Goo worst lazy screen writing, as it's now just a plot convivence/device for anything they want to happen, but cant really explain in an intelligent manner. Ridley Scott should have kept well out of Alien as it was the perfect film and not mucked about with the lore. Explaining the unownable simply breaks everything set up in the original trilogy and inferior on multiple levels.
Romulus is better than Covenant, equally not an Alien or Aliens, just better. Well first three acts... Also should be considered that Romulus was never intended as a full theatrical feature and was intended to go direct to streaming so I can forgive some of it's missteps.
TBH the WW1 Alien fan film on Youtube is better as it actually has some imagination. Romulus is very much a fan service film following a well tread path, it's OK and will hopefully spark something better. Predator got it right with Prey, a completely different direction that both surprised & entertained...
