I don't know if it's best, but I own and like the first generation Moto X. The form factor is very nice; it's not too large and the curved back fits comfortably in the palm of my hand. I use a retina mini iPad for anything where screen size makes a difference, and I don't push my phone very hard; it's almost entirely for phone calls. The current Moto X is much larger, but I've heard the Moto G has a similar has a similar factor as the original Moto X. It lacks some of features such as the ability to turn it on using one's voice. After a while I didn't use that anyways, and I've heard the Moto G retains some nice features I do use, like silencing the phone when you've scheduled a meeting on the calendar as busy, plus I've heard it has a very good battery life.

Since I'm using a Blackberry, not an iPhone, I'd probably have to choose Blackberry :p. If I couldn't use that, I'd go for Nokia or Samsung Windows Phone... then maybe an iPhone.

The iPhone 6+ would be my top choice due to circumstances. The Note 4 probably if I decided I wanted to continue using Android and the Lumia 1520 if I went to WP8.1

But the iPhone is not the best phone, all phones are amazing this year. I think all new smartphones are equal placed.

Hey OP, this thread has not gone the way it was intended, right

LOL it hasn't! He thought we would all be blind and think the iPhone is the best phone. For him to think so, is pathetic and sad.

No phone is the best, one can only be the best for YOU.
Amen. The simple and best answer here.

I see many, many brands of phones every mall I go to. There is no such thing as the perfect phone and the best phone is simply based on personal opinion and what strengths you prioritize MOST from a phone. Stephen Schenck from PocketNow prioritizes on PRICE/VALUE, so Nexus 5 is his daily driver. He simply doesn't want to be stuck on a 2-yr contract or pay north of $450.

I barely rank iPhone 6 on my Top 5. Why? Because while millions love iOS and ecosystem, I don't. My biggest qualm from iPhones is really iOS and the abundant reliance on iTunes to move and delete photos/music. They simply represent the CONTROL FREAK nature of Apple. And iOS simply hasn't matured fast enough for me. It is the same why some will never like Android for being laggy, complicated, or whatever.

I once loved iOS like a high school sweetheart. Back in 2008, iPhone OS 1.1.4 and I had alot of fun. But I grew up the way Android did while Apple's strict parenting stunted iOS' growth. Apple doesn't need to make iOS an open platform. They just need to make it flexible enough for OTHER brands to communicate with. Windows isn't open either but it isn't laced with proprietary handcuffs.

For me, the best phones -

1. Sony Xperia Z3 series
2. Samsung Galaxy Note 4
3. HTC One M8
4. OnePlus One (best value)
5. Apple iPhone 6/6+ (but barely)

I would throw in the Nokia Lumia 1020 of last year ($320) somewhere in the Top 10 because its photography STILL blows away anything iPhone 5s/6/6 Plus has offered. Some site compared Lumia 1020 vs iPhone 5s vs top of the line DSLR cams last year. Current DSLR cams still surpass our cameraphones by a few years. But 5s was like 9-10 years behind while Lumia 1020 was only 3-6 years behind the best DSLR cams of 2013.

It's when uninformed or inexperienced iPhone reviewers like from The Verge say iPhone 6/6 Plus have the best camera ever on a smartphone is when I start telling myself that more people should try out OTHER brands. Not just compare it from the prev iPhone or from a smartphone they only tested for a week to come to the conclusion that iPhone 6/6+ have THE BEST cameras.

Sony vs Samsung (former #1 vs current #1)

I believe a Sony smartphone is the best (for me) especially for needs like battery life and comfortable size. But I don't believe the Japanese conglomerate is a better brand than the South Korean conglomerate. I checked out the curved Samsung UHD display yesterday. I checked the Sony 4K ones after. I shook my head and said to myself, "DAMN. Sorry, Spider-Man/PlayStation fanboys. You lost." Samsung is simply destroying Sony in the TV market as if Samsung is Godzilla destroying the streets of Akihabara. And this is coming from a Sony fanboy who grew up with Sony products since the 1980's. South Koreans and the Chinese are starting to shed the label of inferior quality to the Japanese. I'm sounding like a Samsung apologist here.

I realized the things I dislike from Samsung is superficial. And it isn't even a race war. I have many great experiences with Japanese and South Koreans people alike. Japan is my favorite country I ever visited but I actually have more friendships with Koreans. Always gracious to me. And Samsung doesn't cater to just "poor" people either. They price a TV for $100K which is like 30X more than the most expensive product Apple offers. If Samsung isn't the TOP brand in tech, they are generally near it. They are generally CONSISTENT in most aspects and areas where they usually get roasted for like design/build quality is improving. And TouchWiz should be an easy fix after HTC and LG revamped their skins.

For smartphones - Sony Xperia Z3/Z3C
Overall better tech brand than most - Samsung

I think the OP was worded badly. It should say 'if you consider the iPhone to be the best phone, what would come second'. Some of us have iPhones through choice, myself included, but if I couldn't afford one or fancied a change I would probably go for the Sony Z3. I've owned LG and Samsung's in the past and it hasn't all been good, however I like the look of the Sony range plus I like the playstation features :)

First Tier (Class A)

Google (USA) - my favorite
Apple (USA) - likes sometimes
Samsung (South Korea) - likes sometimes
Microsoft (USA) - likes sometimes

Second Tier (Class B)

LG (South Korea) - sorta likes esp TV's
Sony (Japan) - fav manufacturer since PS1
HTC (Taiwan) - likes esp design
Oppo/OnePlus (China) - likes
Xiaomi (China) - likes esp specs/price
Asus (Taiwan) - likes esp design/price
Huawei (China) - sorta likes
Meizu (China) - still unfamiliar

Third Tier (Class C)

Pantech (South Korea)
Lenovo (China)
Gionee/IUNI (China)
Kyocera (Japan)
Acer (Taiwan)
BlackBerry (Canada)
ZTE (China)

I didn't really want to include Motorola (USA) and Nokia (Finland). Both were Tier 1 along with RIM prior to 2010. Motorola is now owned by Lenovo which I don't regard very highly among phones with its laggy skin and no software updates. Lenovo's ThinkPad purchase from IBM (USA) could be a different story. Nokia phones will no longer be called Nokia and be Microsoft. I only put Microsoft at Tier 1 because of their desktop OS market.

Other companies I like but with little presence in the smartphone industry -

Panasonic (Japan) - The old Panasonic products were more durable than Sony's. Their smartphones are overpriced.

Sanyo (Japan) - Made good and durable CDMA phones even if Sanyo is more obscure than its other Japanese rivals.

Toshiba (Japan) - Sony's fiercest rival in their home country and biological father of the iPod. Look it up.

Sharp (Japan) - Still makes nice displays.

Cowon (South Korea) - Made good mp3 and pmp before.

SanDisk (USA) - Makes good memory cards and mp3 players with triple or double A batteries.

Qualcomm (USA) - I still prefer Snapdragons over MediaTek (Taiwan)! My second cell phone was a Qualcomm.

Canon (Japan) - Excellent at P&S cams

Nikon (Japan) - Excellent at DSLR cams

SEGA (USA/Japan) - I miss the 90's SEGA but making a quiet comeback with mobile games.

Nintendo (Japan) - Grew up on them but I find them too redundant. Sorta neutral with them like I am with Disney (USA).

Other companies I generally dislike -

HP (USA) - Death of Palm. Two of the top PC manufacturers I can't stand.

Dell (USA) - Michael Dell. High defect rating. Nuff said.

Gateway (USA) - Another problematic PC manufacturer.

I also hate Facebook (USA) but love Amazon (USA) but not a fan of the latter's smartphone. I generally stick to Asian manufacturers similar to automobiles. I like fuel efficiency and cheaper/easier fixability of Hondas/Acuras (Japan) and Toyotas/Lexus (Japan) over the faster American and elegant European cars. Yet, most gadgets get MADE IN CHINA these days while OSes are DESIGNED IN US.
