What does the Maxx have for it that the Moto X doesn't beside the battery? They are the same as far as processors and camera.

Larger screen
Better battery life
32gb internal memory versus 16 for the X
Better build (kevlar body)
Wireless charging

From that list I would definitely say the Samsung S4. Why not consider the HTC One also?

iPhone 5s is my top pic but if you go android Moto x or Nexus 5 are the best suggestions. Android will not run like her iPhone. I own both and iPhone 5 and moto x but like my iPhone much better. iOS is much more stable and secure. My moto x crashes freezes, lags and randomly does funny things. But I will give the moto x that the battery life is amazing and the voce commands are very accurate.

My sister is getting a new phone soon and I'm helping her decide on which one to get. She has a 4S right now and is tired of it and she's currently on Verizon. Out of their current offerings, which would you use for 2 years if you had to? I know it'll be hard for a lot of us to answer as we upgrade when we please but bare with me.

Currently I have it decided between :

Moto X

Galaxy S4

Droid Maxx

LG G2

Galaxy s4

If you need battery life to be insane get the maxx

The x is good, but it's a mid range phone, if you're gonna sign a contract always get the best possible phone out there and on Verizon that's the galaxy s 4 or the note

If her kids won't play any heavy games then the Moto X will age very well. Android is getting lighter and the older phones like SII still perform all tasks very well, if apps start getting heavy all of a sudden then that could bring the Moto X down but I doubt that will happen.

This is good advice. If you are keeping a phone for 2 years, then get a top of the line one.

If you're using it for 2 years, the LG G2 is the most future proof with those specs. Although the skin is said to be very heavy. I'm not sure how LG are with their updates either. Samsung are proving to be a better option with keeping their devices supported, I mean even the Galaxy S2 I bought my Mum has a Jellybean update.

The galaxy S4 has such a small amount of storage available out of the box though, is she savvy enough to use Micro SD cards?

I'm currently using the G2. Why do you say the G2 is the most future proof device now, especially when comparing with, say, the S4?

That being said, Kit Kat is rolling out for the G2 in Korea now as we type. :) (Hope it will be world-wide soon enough!)

I'm saying it's future proof purely from a specs point of view, it has a snapdragon 800 over the S4's snapdragon 600, so in theory will run more Android versions than the S4 as the system requirements increase.

That doesn't mean anything. The OG has a superior chipset over the Galaxy S3, yet the Galaxy S3 is on the newer version of Android.

If updates are of any concern, the irony of that list is that based on recent trends, the least powerful device stands to see updates further out than the other three. The Moto X is already running KitKat while the others playing catch up.

Considering the OP's sister isn't really concerned about updates but rather good out of the box performance, I'd probably suggest the G2 based on overall performance. That being said, one's preferences (or distaste) towards OEM skins can have a big impact on one's overall experience regardless of the hardware so as I believe someone else suggested, I'd recommend she get at least a little hands on time at a retail store with any device she's considering.

Droid Maxx already has 4.4 also.

Yup, correct you are.

Funny how things change in just a year. Think back to the state of Android devices and manufacturers a year ago and I doubt any of us would've said Motorola and HTC would be the most prompt with their updates with some of the best devices available. Going to be very interesting to see what things are like a year from now.

I said it does mean I'll be able to run later versions of android, I didn't say it'd be guaranteed to get them. Did you read my post before? I said the lg g2 is more future proof spec wise but Samsung have been better with updates.

In reality she'll likely get tired of anything. I'm still using an iPhone 4S and while I'm kind of bored with it I'm just as bored with my Android devices (albeit I haven't used KitKat yet).

Just my own experience/opinion:

I've had countless devices ever since the coming of the smartphone: BB pearl, Bold, Storm, Droid 2, HTC windows phone, and iPhone.

I've also played with many devices that came out in the past few years (except for the windows phones). I can hands down say that my Note 2 has been the only phone I've been completely satisfied with for the past year and 1 month. It's absolutely excellent in any and every way.

My personal opinion on iphone is that the limited functionality is just not for me. I like to use my phone to it's potential and dive into it's core useability. Idk I feel so restricted when I'm using an iphone. (I don't want to start any arguments, this is just my view on the newer iphones).

That said, when I do need a change maybe in the next 6 or so months I'd likely be switching to the Note 3 (or 4 if it comes out). I might take a stab at one of those nokias if microsoft can expand it's appstore.

Never discount a Note 3 as an option. A surprisingly large number of women (surprising to me) seem to like the Note and it one of those phones that will never get old.
