Yeah, the next iMac refresh is not gonna happen before September 2020.

They can do yearly upgrades on their iPads, iPhones and Watches. Tech is still moving fast with these smaller devices and the adoption rate is higher. But introducing a shorter update cycle on their Macs would just enrage customers.

We'll get the new Mac Pro showcased at WWDC and probably a bigger update for the MacBooks. Apple will want to get rid of the Keyboards. But the iMac? Hell no, not before they are ready to switch to their new ARM CPUs.

Well I do remember the last time Apple changed CPUs when I had just bought my iMac G5 and I think after one OS update it was Intel only (if I remember correctly) . Back then I updated my computer a lot more frequently and it wasn‘t such an issue. For sure they didn‘t support PowerPC for 6-8 years.

It may be different this time in case they keep Intel Macs around, but I kind of doubt it.

Back then, computers were nearly doubling in performance every 2 years. Now it takes around 8-10 years for that same performance increase.

People used to update their computers like they update their phones today (every 2-3 years). But now people update their computers like they update their televisions (every 8-10 years).

The personal computer is now a mature product. Apple has been shipping 8GB RAM standard since 2012! Imagine RAM staying constant for 7 years in the past.

Exactly right and hence I am not sure if I shall go now for an Intel Mac or be better off waiting for an ARM that will be supported much longer. On the other side - all my apps run perfect.

Go with intel. No sense waiting for something that night never come. There have been rumors of Apple switching to their own processors for over 5 years now. It’s unlikely it will happen anytime soon.

Go for Intel. You are going to have a nice machine that will be supported for a while. If and When the ARM ones come out, you can always sell the Intel (yes there will be a loss but you would have used it for a while) and you can get yourself the ARM one.

On top of that, would you jump right into an ARM iMac which you don't know which issues might generate and how/when it is going to be supported by 3rd part developers?

I know I'm gettting one. Just waiting for GPU benchmarks and heat/fan issues

Im really debating what to do. I just love new tech and I have been waiting so long and my wife has given me the go ahead. My old iMac is running fine for my needs, but man I would love that 27" screen.
I can probably sell my current iMac for 680usd.

Same boat but I’ve decided to buy. They won’t have a redesign until at least next year (if we’re lucky). It should last at least 3 to 5 years and by then they may have worked the bugs out of the ARM chips they are probably moving to.

I was more conflicted when the iMac was stuck with 4 core processors. The only thing holding me back now are CPU temps. Even the PC guys say the i9 is too hot without overclocking. I hope to get one of the i5’s.

i5 is running at 95W too, and even higher so afraid it will be too hot. It has a higher consumption than the 2017 7700K which was a heat sink and loud

Hello guys and girls may you can help me out.

Rigt now I have a 21" late 2013 256gb ssd 16gb i7. Still running smooth.

I have been waiting and saving for an iMac upgrade. Now the 2019 upgrade is finally is here im thinking about ordering the following:

27" i5 9. generation
8 Gb ram
580x
512 gb ssd.

Price in Denmark: 3060 usd at educationstore. Im a teacher.

Well, for me its a lot of money and the specs are probably overkill. But I want my purchase to last many years. 5-10 years.

And that's where my concern comes in. Im thinking; what if the redesign comes at the next update? Will I have buyers remorse? I know it's a difficult question to answer. But what would you do in my situation?

If your old one is fulfilling your needs then you might as well just wait until it doesn't.
Also, this is little off topic but why do people need wife's permission to purchase something they want with their own money? I never understood that concept. :)

For me, I was waiting for this update but after seeing it I think it will be iOven so I'm waiting for tear downs and hands on reviews. Also, I will wait for WWDC to see the Mac Pro and the display to see what is on the market. I also don't think I'll get this version and I might wait till Fall to see if there is redesign as this iMac feels more like a "bridge the gap" kinda thing. Most of the tech inside is super outdated so I'm not feeling the love here. The new GPUs are around the corner so maybe we will get Fall update (happened many times in the past) so I'm waiting.

My advice is, wait for WWDC at least because the new display will most likely show you where the next update is heading. Then you can see (and just don't ask wife for a permission :-D :-D :-D ). Its just 3 months wait and in that time you will get many hands on reviews and experiences from other users so you will see if it really is iOven or they solved it somehow.

The 3.7 i5 9600K is 95W, but the 3.1 i5 8600 is 65 W. That's the reason I'm bouncing between the two systems. The 8600 at least has a chance of not overheating and throttling.
[doublepost=1553610390][/doublepost]Well, as for asking for the wife's permission, I can give my opinion at least. Any major financial decision in our house, that affects both of us needs to be discussed. We don't have to discuss buy a DVD, but a $3,000 to $4,000 computer I DEFINITELY discuss with my wife and business partner. And I hope she'd do the same with me.

Yes, I'm still waiting to see hit issues. If it heats to much I will go for the 8600, though it annoys me because it leaves you with the 575X.

I also understand your asking for "permision" for such an invested. Same here, I have saved my last 2 years of not getting xmas or bday presents to be able to get this :D

I am annoyed about being stuck with a 575X as well, but as long as I can run Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop and InDesign, I'm fine. Gaming is a Want not a Need. I use my PS4 for games anyway. And I don't do video editing or 3d modeling. I would consider buying an eGPU if I really needed it. I plan on running multiple monitors anyway. Some apps can run on the built in screen using the eGPU and others need the external monitor. I figure since I run two monitors, it would still work out.
