I have a 2017 12.9 iPad Pro, Wi-Fi & cellular that had never had its battery replaced even though it is used probably a minimum of 2 hours per day. It recently became unreliable at charging., sometime yes, sometimes not, swapping to a different charger seemed to help, then one day nothing worked. I took it to a Ubrakeitwefixit shop (or some name like that) he said it could be the charging port or they were known for having the power management chip on the board inside go bad.
I brought it to Apple Store 2 hours away from home. they diagnosed yes it would not take a charge but were able to read it thru the lightning port. they said it was vintage , not obsolete and if they had any in stock, they could sell me new one for $600. Obviously they tried to sell me current model. Mean while I had bought new iPad Pro 12.9 Locally.
apple was able to replace the old one and I returned the model. For my use, the new one didn’t seem to make sense for $900 more. This way, I’ll hold out for new model as the old one is still on current ipadOS.

I have a iPad mini5, I used it to read e-books and I'm using it to watch the video now. I've been using it for three and a half years. Now its battery life has dropped a lot, but I'm not going to sell it, I'm going to replace the battery and keep using it.

Assuming it meets the conditions for battery service. I brought 2 iPads to Apple recently, a mini 5 and a 10.5, both didn't meet the conditions. The iPad analytics (so no third party software) gave me 81.% battery health and 85% maximum battery capacity. Apple told me it was at 90%.
As for my 10.5, which according to iMazing was under 80% Apple gave me 87%. So again way above the 80% threashold for battery service.
By the time it goes under 80% according to Apple it will be obsolete. Currently battery life is less than half what it was when new.
Check you iPad analytics and add another 5-10%...
