It will have a newer processor, which will mitigate the additional 5G battery drain. So I think it will have the same battery life as the SE 2020. That's it - that's all Apple have to do (will do) for the SE 2022 entry-level iPhone. Captures the right market, gets a round of news headlines and 3 billion YouTube reviews, keeps the shareholders happy.

There's no more room internally for anything new + the device has to hit a low price point. Boring but functional.

Does the 6/7/8/SE 2020 body have the room internally for that?
That's what I was thinking too. Perhaps there's unused (minimal) extra space from having already removed the 3D Touch sensor? It just seems like they're going all-in with MagSafe and I'd be surprised if a new release iPhone (even the lowest cost one) didn't have it.

Just give me SE Plus.

Nah. They probably figured there won't be a lot of buyers versus a price cut XR/11.

SE $399
11 $499 (XR in 2020-21)
That also makes it unnecessary as they would have likely put the SE Plus in a chassis similar to iPhone 11. At some point upgrading the silicon to an A16 or A17 may make it more worthwhile.

iPhone 11/modern bezel-free design paired with up to date specs at $499 is bound to cannibalize “regular” iPhone sales.

At least with the current SE, apart from anti-notch TouchID/Home button die-hards like me, the older design makes it less attractive to the more mainstream audience (basically 1st world customers buying phones on 24+ month contracts/installment plans).

Now if Apple gets rid of the notch on iPhone 14, then I can see the 2023/24 SE going bezel-free.

What surprised me this past week is how outdated the slightly smaller notch on iPhone 13 makes iPhone 12 look in comparison. A notch-less design, or even a cutout, is the perfect opportunity for Apple to reintroduce a similar iPhone XR design.

I was hoping to get a 14 but might have to get a SE22. I could care less about MagSafe. Everything I’ve read I’m not that impressed. The case I’d be getting wouldn’t be the MagSafe compatible version anyway. If I get a new phone this year it’s only to jump on the 5G bandwagon and if I have battery issues. Still holding out for the mainline phone to come out with some form of Touch ID.

Even if 14 is notchless, I doubt the SE will be bezel free. I’d expect it to have thick bezels for marketing and cost reasons.

SE will likely use power button Touch ID and will look too close to a notchless device. That’s why the current rumors of 5.7-inch display with existing rumors of XR/11 chassis make sense. Smaller and cheaper display with bezels.

More importantly, would price sensitive SE buyers consider MagSafe accessories? Seems unlikely. I doubt Apple would do it for that reason alone.

Affordable 3rd party MagSafe accessories are available.

Personally, while the price of the SE is attractive, to me that's a secondary consideration to small size and non-PWM display. I bought a 12 mini but that gives me headaches so I went back to the SE.

By bezel-free, I meant no more top/bottom bezels like the current SE.

I still get some degree of headaches with iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini, but the second-generation iPhone SE feels antiquated compared to those phones.

To its credit the design is reasonably appealing, the white color is still pearlescent despite being a budget phone, and the display is decent for a 326ppi LCD. It’s odd since the UI looks particularly dull in comparison to iPhone 13 Mini yet photos and videos aren’t half bad. In fact, color accuracy and contrast are relatively impressive. Apple’s display team doesn’t hold back on iPhone SE.

I’d be curious to see and hold a third-generation iPhone SE, even if the display should be more or less the same. I would be excited to have more colors to choose from, although that’s unlikely.

Having Night Mode in the SE and with better battery life will cannibalise the sales of the 11 and even the 12.

I would love new iphone (call it se if you want apple) with all the bells and whistles but with non pwm lcd tech, would pay same premium price as for oled flagships… but we will probably never get this dream phone:(

Yeah. Needed to take some pics of some nooks and crannies (network jacks/cabling) and Night Mode on the 12 mini was awesome. Too bad it gives me a headache.

That's why we didn't consider the mini - PWM - and we like Touch ID. I'd prefer more battery versus MagSafe. We're looking forward to the 8 Mar event.
