What version of iOS are you most nostalgic about?

I ask this as usually I never look back to past versions of iOS.

However iOS 11 has been an absolute horror show and it’s made me think of what past versions of iOS that I most enjoyed.

For me it’s probably iOS 7.

A controversial choice, I know.

My reasons are that I was getting tired of the skeuomorphism (remember that word?) of iOS until then.

Remember the green felt of Game Center?

The window blinds material look in Notification Center?

The reel to reel tape deck of podcasts app?

And many more...

It was a breath of fresh air that really modernised the system.

I’ll always remember the time I installed it and as it moved to the boot screen due the second time, seeing the reflective Apple logo being replaced by a plain solid one.

And then seeing my apps start to update themselves over the next few weeks with iOS 7 icons and UI. And control Center was great too.

It really felt like getting a new phone, it was that dramatic a change. So much so that I didn’t mind the fact that springboard crashed several times a day!

Although I was very glad when its first major patch stabilised things - and toned back on some of the colour choices that made you want to get your sunglasses out. Phone & messages app icons: I’m looking at you.

I’ll end this on another positive note - already it looks like iOS 12 is shaping up to be the ‘Snow Leopard’ of iOS and one that I think thst we’ll all really enjoy using.

Until then, let’s wallow in iOS nostalgia.

I always enjoy using the latest version of iOS. Although for nostalgia I wish I could go back to iOS 6 for a while. (I can’t say the same about windows, windows 7 is my favorite, followed by xp)

I much rather prefer stability, performance, and user experience over new features.

I would say iOS 6 was probably my best experience.

For more recent versions, I think iOS 8 was the last iOS that had the best user experience across multiple devices.

Hey, I thought that no-one else in the world had ever posed this question!

iOS 6 - I’m being really lazy and can’t remember all of its features.

I remember iCloud & that it was pretty underwhelming in the end.

I also remember the blue tint used commonly in iOS before 7 was lightened for seemingly no real reason.

And I remember that it had the launch of Apple maps. Ouch.

It was stable though. But maybe it was because it was way less complex than today’s iOS?

Agree that iOS 8 was a great release. It cleaned up the excesses of iOS 7 and was its ‘Snow Leopard’.

I would’ve picked iOS 8 it’s just that iOS 7 I remember having way more impact on me re how I experienced my iPhone.

It’s funny, I remember not liking 9 that much. I can’t put my finger on it but it seemed to be the point where the simplifications of iOS 7 and the subsequent refinement of 8, got lost.

Mind you, it did bring power saving mode and night shift. Try using your phone at night nowadays after being used to using night shift. Ouch.

The poll results are interesting. I am surprised iOS 10 got more votes than iOS 8. I am also surprised that iOS 9 is tied with iOS 11.

I haven't used iOS 11, but iOS 9 was pretty bad in my experience.

If I ranked them, not counting iOS 11, it would go from best to worse iOS 8, 10, 7, 9. I'm scared to update to iOS 11, so I will probably never know how it is compared to the others.

There is an obvious issue with the poll, it assumes that people used the older iOS versions.

Don’t ever update to iOS 11.

Best is 7.011! It fast and has very few bugs! Cannot say anything about 10.11 and later iOS versions since I never upgrade my iOS after buying a new Apple device. Do not like to have my mobile devices become obsolete!

I liked iOS 9 the best. For me it was very stable and just worked well (I also miss slide to unlock). iOS 10 was quite stable as well, but I found it unpolished or having a feeling of being unfinished. iOS 11 is my favourite to date design wise, and has been very stable on my iPads, but has been a bit buggy on my 6s (especially after the 10.4 update which introduced excessive battery drain).

I had all of those on my iPad and 11 is the best because of the additional functionality on iPads.
