actually the iPhone 4S was announced on October 4th 2011 and Steve Jobs passed away a day later on October 5th 2011.The iPhone 4S was Steve Jobs' last true iPhone. If memory serves, he was still with us for the 5 launch, but his tale had almost come to the end. But the iPhone 4 launch had to be his crowning shining moment: the iPhone come into its full glory as he could conceive of it.
Has to be the Retina Display for me. The difference between previous screen tech and the Retina Display felt far greater than advancement that has come since.
It fundamentally changed my expectations for device screens forever and is one of the few breakthroughs listed here that if reverted, would actually make the device unusable to me.

I don’t doubt he knew about the future products (such as the iPhone 5) but the iPhone 4S keynote was probably the last one he saw![]()
It was hard to be patient the first few years when the adoption of it by places around me was slow. So glad that's not the case any more. From a usability perspective, Apple Pay was revolutionary for me. I can't remember the last time I used a card to pay for anything and the travel passes in the wallet make planes and trains way less hassle too.
Wow I remember the hassle with AT&T MMS. Had to go to some link which still didn't work for meFavorite breakthroughs?
AT&T implementing MMS and cut and paste. Of course, I had a HTC phone then so it was interesting to watch friends of mine struggle with this when my Touch Pro had those from the beginning.
It's crazy the numbers the 6 series did, especially considering they are easily the worst phones in the lineup. Plagued with memory problems and the infamous bending.I personally wasn't thrilled about the new sizes...BUT what you say is true. And I remember there was such pent-up demand that the 6 and 6 plus obliterated all records for iPhone sales. In some ways, Apple is still trying to live up to that, to see that kind of explosive sales growth again.
The build quality? I loved the design, but it was notorious for shattering. When I first saw iPhone 4 I was absolutely blown away. And not just by the beautiful retina display but also by the timeless design, excellent build quality and amazing and fun software like nothing else. I still remember when I first tried the phone at the T-Mobile store. What truly got me was when I took a picture and that beautiful shutter animation appeared and when I deleted the photo it was sucked into the trash can. It was so fun to use Apple products back then. Apple killed all this fun and imaginitive experience with that horrible iOS 7. I hope they will someday realize what a mistake it was.

Did it? Or was it largely a convoluted and inconsistent feature that app developers never fully utilized and the general public had no idea about.3D Touch got done dirty by this list.
There are a lot of features in iOS today that aren't that consistent or obvious, either.Did it? Or was it largely a convoluted and inconsistent feature that app developers never fully utilized and the general public had no idea about.
