For me, the biggest breakthrough is still the addition of the App Store. It went from an interesting device with a few functions, to a device that could be absolutely anything developers could come up with.

Has to be the Retina Display for me. The difference between previous screen tech and the Retina Display felt far greater than any screen advancement that has come since.

It fundamentally changed my expectations for device screens forever and is one of the few breakthroughs listed here that if reverted, would actually make the device unusable to me.

The iPhone 4S was Steve Jobs' last true iPhone. If memory serves, he was still with us for the 5 launch, but his tale had almost come to the end. But the iPhone 4 launch had to be his crowning shining moment: the iPhone come into its full glory as he could conceive of it.
actually the iPhone 4S was announced on October 4th 2011 and Steve Jobs passed away a day later on October 5th 2011.

I don’t doubt he knew about the future products (such as the iPhone 5) but the iPhone 4S keynote was probably the last one he saw :(

this is the only correct answer IMO. the retina screen turned the iPhone from "Apple's take on a cell phone" into a true portable computer.

Ah, thank you for the correction. Leaving aside matters of the loss of a human life being a bad thing, it is otherwise appropriate that the 4 was his last presentation. That was a wowee one.

From a usability perspective, Apple Pay was revolutionary for me. I can't remember the last time I used a card to pay for anything and the travel passes in the wallet make planes and trains way less hassle too.
It was hard to be patient the first few years when the adoption of it by places around me was slow. So glad that's not the case any more.

Favorite breakthroughs?

AT&T implementing MMS and cut and paste. Of course, I had a HTC phone then so it was interesting to watch friends of mine struggle with this when my Touch Pro had those from the beginning.
Wow I remember the hassle with AT&T MMS. Had to go to some link which still didn't work for me

Put larger screens, but most of them I liked. I definitely didn't like Lightning at first because some manufactures took forever to make Lightning accessories

I could easily vote for anything on that list. Great poll!

I’m going to go off the board and say Live Photos with the 6s.
I take a lot of photos. Mostly they’re just friends, family or trip photos.

I’ve taken so many Live Photos where it’s the motion and the sound that completely change the experience when I go back to look through them.

I ❤️ Live Photos!

Lots to choose from the list. I'm going to vote for Apple Pay. Every other feature on the list is out there on the market and has been updated/upgraded by all cell phone makers. The plus size phones was a big hit in tandem with the retina screens. However, I've used other brands wallets, i.e. Samsung Pay/Google Pay/wallet, and I hate them......sooo much. Apple has really built an app that will store just about any card you have. My state recently adopted digital ID's so I can put that on my phone now. No longer do I have to carry around the Costanza/Dad wallet. Apple Wallet has pretty much everything I need now (except cash) at my fingertips. While not as highly touted as the other features, this one has to be one my favs so far.

When I first saw iPhone 4 I was absolutely blown away. And not just by the beautiful retina display but also by the timeless design, excellent build quality and amazing and fun software like nothing else. I still remember when I first tried the phone at the T-Mobile store. What truly got me was when I took a picture and that beautiful shutter animation appeared and when I deleted the photo it was sucked into the trash can. It was so fun to use Apple products back then. Apple killed all this fun and imaginitive experience with that horrible iOS 7. I hope they will someday realize what a mistake it was.

I personally wasn't thrilled about the new sizes...BUT what you say is true. And I remember there was such pent-up demand that the 6 and 6 plus obliterated all records for iPhone sales. In some ways, Apple is still trying to live up to that, to see that kind of explosive sales growth again.
It's crazy the numbers the 6 series did, especially considering they are easily the worst phones in the lineup. Plagued with memory problems and the infamous bending.

The build quality? I loved the design, but it was notorious for shattering.

Touch ID didn't seem like a big deal when it was announced, but in retrospect it's way more convenient than a passcode. But I voted for the Retina Display because it was such an obvious improvement that made it difficult to go back to non-Retina iOS devices.

I'm surprised by the high number of votes for Face ID though. I've never viewed it as being better than Touch ID... it's just different. I don't care about portrait mode or animoji though, so it's purely an authentication method for me.

No doubt. The palm pre was putting the 3g/3GS to shame. Of course Apple still had iTunes and palm was doomed by HP. (If only Microsoft instead).

But the iPhone 4 stomped all that out. It’s like Steve said screw them. They wanna piggyback off iTunes?

I would go with 2nd generation TouchID and 3D Touch which were both introduced in iPhone 6s and 6s Plus...

And the capacitive home button introduced on iPhone 7 and 7 Plus and used in iPhone 8 and 8 Plus and SE 2020 and SE 2022

Did it? Or was it largely a convoluted and inconsistent feature that app developers never fully utilized and the general public had no idea about.
There are a lot of features in iOS today that aren't that consistent or obvious, either.
