I always said the best looking and most practical iPhone for me today would be the 4S with X/XS-like screen. That would be the most epic phone of all time. I'd pay $800 for it. I'd change nothing about it, aside from fitting the X/XS-like screen.

I agree, the 4/4s design was the best looking followed closely by the 5/5s/SE.
Revisionist history is going to be strong in this post. iPhone 4 design was praised. iPhone 5 design was initially very polarizing. People hated the glass cellular windows on the top and bottom on the back of the phone. Apple attempted to rectify that with antenna lines on the 6. People hated how strong the antenna lines were. Apple attempted to rectify that with the 7 by changing the curvature of the antenna lines to match the phone.

Should be a poll!
I've been using iPhones since the 3G, but I'd vote for the iPhone X as my favorite. I suppose that category includes the newer XS

The 5/5s/SE design is my least favourite. The switch from glass to aluminium made it feel cheaper to me.

Next would be the 6/7/8. Of the iPhone 6-esque models, the 8 is the sharpest of the bunch as I’ve always preferred glass.

Next, the original design.

Then it’d be the 4/4s.

Finally, much as I’d never have thought it this time last year, the iPhone X is my favourite. On particular the silver model.

I hope that the next iPhone has the same style design as the 4/4s or even the 5/5s with a huge display, I think that would be stunning

In a focus group with a desktop filled with phones, the iPhone 4 is usually the first one picked up off the table

Nobody seems to remember the iPhone 4 being a bit rough to hold due to its sharp edges. It was a good looking phone though.

I liked the 3GS best. It felt good to hold.

Worst is the iPhone 6/7/8, especially the Plus models. Huge bezels and massive physical size on the Plus. Kept me away from iPhones for years.

4/4s for me too, I think, although I really love my 6s (and looks wise I much prefer it to the 7 or 8). I hated the 5/5s; they were too tall and skinny.

My 3GS was white (a decision I regretted) but I hated subsequent phones in white because the white bezels look all wrong to me.

Apart from its looks, I liked the fact that my 4s could effectively be its own tripod.

I do think the X/XS is gorgeous too though but my ideal version would have a black back but polished silver stainless steel edge.

I must admit I’m a bit worried about the stainless steel band on the Xs getting micro scratches, so putting a case straight on it

Based on how I use my device today I’m hopefully I can answer XS Max.

Historically it would be the iPhone 5.

I see a lot of iPhone 4 mentions. It’s not my favorite design but I, to this day, feel it was the best keynote and greatest singular leap.

White 4/4s. The glass and the matte steel was soooo premium feeling and it just felt right. Then it would be the gold 5s. Gorgeous.

The silver iPhone X might tie for first, though.
