I’m my opinion …

the worst:
iPhone 3G:
The speeds on 3G were not mostly gaining just GORS or EDGE speeds. Hated how Apple stated 3G but the day bandwidth non tethering was terrible.

at that time I was still bouncing back/forth between Blackberry 9780/9900, Nokia E-71i and testing the iPhone 3G as my ex spouse got one for each of us on her phone plan. We both saw the potential but returned for full refund in the past 14 days of its run until Apple launched the 3GS at same pr cheaper pricing on carrier plans for 16GB models. Right on time for my wallet to get murked on freemium 1st person shooter games lol.

3GS faired a LOT better with faster Wi-Fi better data speeds and increased battery life. The camera on each was TERRIBLE!! I can’t believe that Flickr showed more uploads where from iPhone. Downgraded from 3.2MP cam smartphones to VGA/1.3mp was terrible, like stepping back 3yrs in time.

best:

of all the iPhones I’ve used, the 12 mini is THE best one I’ve owned.
3G, 3GS, 4S,5,5S,6/6S,7, 8 (X for 14 days), And the SE OG the best of all the small form factor phones. Battery life I wish was a bit better but for my use case more than satisfying.

iPhone 4S:
The extreme care in design, build quality, attention to care of the logic board layout, the debut of Apple’s first fully designed silicon for main cpu with integrated gpu … the weight and solid feel in your hand… it’s been years since a phone could be used as a self security deterrent lol (Nokia communicators had this reputation prior).

LED camera flash!!
- huge game changer for iPhone!
- quality glass lenses, real sensors, great pictures vs the competition, mmm-hmmm!!

multi-touch:
Really came into its own here on iOS and the flat screen which was much more designed to track our fingers accurately.

music:
That headphone jack was the truth back then. I spent years synching music to MP3’s in pocket size player, loading to MicroSD cards or Memory Sticks (SonyEricsson’s) and then the 3GS but the plug itself was flat. No issues with sound due to half the port being slanted like the 3GS.

glass:
Every iPhone with a glass back until the 12 series I’ve been nervous about since the 4S. Front pocket running through turn styled crashing my thigh holding iPhone pocket through the post not a dent scratch nor warp. Dropping it from 3.5’ approx never cracked it. ??!!! Thought it had fairy dust on it u Tim I saw someone drop there’s in front of me. Bumper went on really quick after work that day lol.

5: Apple refined the 4S in such a much lighter yet narrow body. This was literary Apple middle finger to the big phones race that started and they held their own for half the year of the production cycle.

7:
propped Aluminum allow used. Honestly I think the Mayte blue leak would’ve been sick as a production phone but Mayte black and pearl metallic black was made from dreams!!

Slightly after cpu, munch stronger design without the weight or bulk, significant improvement from the 6/6S

battery and headset issues plagued it though

X, XS - design looked great during the event. In person the thing was monstrous FaceID was too slow and should not have launched that soon imh.

the 11 series I think shoes is & Apple the limits to the physical size of an iPhone with bulging rounded sides. I think complaints of battery life led to the design. Ultimately much more efficient cores wins out.

Funny how the most basic features ended up being something to upgrade to. Having the flash on the 4 was big vs 3g and 2g with no flash. Heck I use the flashlight daily, its a must have feature. Its really hard to innovate phones these days. Going from 8plus to XS Max after the feeling of newness ended it didn't change my use case. Same with XS Max to 12 Pro Max. To me it was a step back, more cumbersome to hold. Hence why the Mini was such a great upgrade for me. It was way more comfortable. I can find songs while driving one handed. The 12 Pro Max was impossible.

But the lack of big feature year to year, even every 2 years its disappointing to spend over 1k on a phone and you don't experience a big jump like when the 3g to 4, to 5 and 6.

Considering the iphones after 2014 (thats when i started using iphone)
In my opinion, best should definitely be 6s and worst will be 7
few could argue that 11 pro series were also great, cant deny that but in terms of longevity its not tested yet

Like an apple nut I bought the 7 plus and I agree. Aside from water proofing it too few features. And battery life wasn’t an improvement. That was a terrible upgrade. My dad still has it as a spare iPhone though and I took the phone in the water to capture some really great pics I would otherwise be unable to.

Hard one. 🤔

Best, iPhone 4, 5, 6S plus, X, XS max, 12 pro max.

Worse, iPhone 6 Plus due to the 1gb ram, a lot of people were complaining about the phone slowing down because of the ram.
You could literally be in Safari, check a text message real quick, then return to Safari and it would refresh all of your pages. One of the most frustrating experiences ever!

iPhone X was the best. It gave us new design, edge-edge to screen, swipe gestures, Face ID.
iPhone 6s was the worst. I updated from iPhone 6 and noticed that nothing was different other that 3D touch, which felt super gimmicky
Not a single person would agree with this take. iPhone 6S was tremendously better coming from an iPhone 6. It got rid of the system wide lag and Safari refresh problems because they gave the phone the RAM it needed.

I would have to say the iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS . The iPhone 3G should have been the 3GS. There was no good reason for the iPhone 3G. The 3GS was almost perfect, just like the iPhone 11Pro was almost perfect.

I remember moving through the 4,4s,5,5s phase and feeling somewhat underwhelmed by each. Probably due to same design language.

I had a 6 Plus which was dire.

the 7 plus I replaced it with was much better (yet same design though…) but my favourite all time upgrade was the XS in gold. Quite simply , the best looking iPhone I ever owned even if the battery was poor. Downhill since then though to an 11 Pro Max.
The 12 Pro series design isn’t great in my opinion.

the 6s nowadays gets iOS 15, is the longest supported smartphone of all time beating any android and you tell everyone it’s the worst 🤦‍♂️

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus = worst most depreciated launched alongside the X in 2017

And in 2018 the XsMaxx

What iPhones were the best buy for the money at the time of their release and which were the worst?
If we're talking "best buy for the money" vs. "worst buy for the money", then you could easily classify the iPhone X, iPhone Xs and Xs Max, and any iPhone with "Pro" in the title in the latter camp (and pretty much all others in the former camp) seeing as you're paying for shinier materials that don't add any function, and a lens that previously existed on the 7 Plus and 8 Plus but now, require spending a good $300 more because Apple.

If we're talking "which iPhones had reliability issues and/or quality repair extension programs that covered a really wide range of sold units" (and not just the first few months of sale), then you can include the AT&T model iPhone 4, all models of iPhone 5, both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the original iPhone X, and the iPhone 11. It sounds as though the iPhone 11 issues stopped after a while, but most purchased during that first year were affected. The iPhone 6 Plus was more affected than the 6 while the 7 was more affected than the 7 Plus. But in both cases, both experience the failures. There were notable iPhone 6s and 6s Plus and non-Plus iPhone 8 REPs, but those didn't last long enough for me to feel like lumping them in that category.

Best vs worst is an interesting concept for me. A device aging isn't a bad thing for me. My question is always, does my phone still do what I needed it to do day one?

I don't expect new features necessarily. But if an update takes away key functionality (speed, battery life, usability) then that is what would make it the 'worst' year.

When I think of awesome Apple devices, I think of the 6S, SE, iPad 2, iPad Pro 2018 and X. Worst would be the 6, iPad 3rd gen with Retina and the 2016-2019 Macbook Pros.

It was a great feature and one I used heavily. The replication they’ve replaced it with (long press) is poor by comparison.

Yeah and they even replaced it on 3D Touch capable devices like my iPhone X and watch s5, now i just have to long press anyway. I liked the effects it would have on things when changing the pressure

I change opinions all the time,

I currently dig into the 11 Pro Max

Then out of nowhere I say the 12 Pro Max would win

----

I'm also digging into the 12 Mini looks like such a cozy phone

We tend to keep our iPhones for 3-4 years. We all upgraded from the 4s to the 7, and the 7 was great for us. I actually jumped on the 6s Plus as I was seduced by the larger screen, but everybody else stayed with the 4s. We are all happy with our iPhone 11's now but we haven't had them that long. I splurged on the 11 Pro Max and it has the best battery life of any iPhone I've owned. Spectacular camera too. I use it all the time to take quick snaps of shipping labels at work (FedEx). I love being able to straighten our a picture, trim it up nicely, etc.

I will be sticking with my iPhone X as long as possible. I love the 3D Touch camera and torch buttons

best iPhone upgrade will always be iPhone 4 until they make something as shocking and beautiful, say, a proper foldable.

2nd best is (gold) XS Max which imo is the closest thing to an iPhone 4 upgrade in beauty.

3rd pick 6S Plus as being solid solid solid and refined with performance, still decent enough in 2021.

//////

Worse by far is iPhone 6 (Plus), as from a performance standpoint it was a tiny hair faster 5S which would break phisically.

2nd worst 11 Pro Max, thicker, (basically) no performance increase a la 5S->6 and worse camera design.

3rd Worst would be 12 Pro Max as they made it wider and no matter how you spin it, straight edges are not as good as in 4". What I do LOVE about 12 Pro Max is the return of 2D flat screen, it's so modern and classy looking in 2021. Ever since Samsung started the trend in 2014 I always considered round corners/edges a gimmick a la Android with no actual benefit unless software done properly (which was never made). I think the "only" phone that made 2.5D actually good /stylish was Lumia 1520, which was the only phone I trully enjoyed besides an iPhone.

I actually liked the 2 year S cycle, as the normal one would please the hype people and Android mainstream scene and the S cycle would make the proper phone for the "Real" iPhone user. Apple should go back to that so they can have 2 years to develop a proper iPhone while also milking the scene and making money in an honorable-enough manner.
This is the way. I’m not very impressed with the 15 …
