What will get you to go intel?

When OS X replaced OS 9 I thought ok, I'll wait but then came safari and iLife so I had to switch. So what will get you to switch to intel besides speed? What app can they make intel only that will be a must have? The only thing I can think of that even comes close is some DVR TV application but I have eyeTV and it is the best DVR out there.

the question for me is not "will i switch?" but "when will i switch?" because the next computer i buy will be a mac anyway

I think there's going to be functionality moving to Intel OSX that will sadly leave the PowerPC behind.

Something someone mentioned as a possibility was the being able to use existing Windows plug-ins/codecs on the Mac. As long as you can tie into the hooks, the plug ins could run native.

It won't take much for me to get one of the new intel machines. All that has to happen is for a lower end laptop with an intel chip to come out, and my PB G4 to die (It's already got some dents in it, due to an unfortunate incident on the bus, but it's still humming along perfectly.)

Assuming my Mac Mini serves me well for a couple more years, then I suppose the relentless march of technology will force me to switch to an Intel when I shop for a new computer. Before then, I doubt there will be a "must-have" feature for me, as my needs are fairly basic.

I think for many of us it will simply be a timing issue.

I'm perfectly happy with my iMac G5 Rev. b, and I see no compelling reason to even be considering a new system yet. A few years from now, things will be different. Streaming HD, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, 20+ Megapixel cameras, etc... eventually all computers get old. When the time comes, apps will be x86 native, and dual / quad cores will be the norm.

If I needed a new computer now to do my tasks, I'd be getting one now. But I don't, so the switch looks to be at least 2 years for now.

I have three requirments of things to work before I can go:


WOW-Blizzard says by the end of Jan, they will have the release.
UT2004-According to a post at inside mac games, a version is ready, but they are waiting for a intel imac to test before release.
PORN-.jpg's are already supported in the new intels

Of course, the last one is more of a joke

I just got a PM this July, so I'm thinking in around 3 years I'll get a new box.

I'm just hoping it won't be too much of a pain when all Apple's line goes Intel in a year or so. Crossing my fingers that most programs will stay universal for the next 2-3 years.

If my PowerMac were to die, then I would probably get it replaced (AppleCare) and then sell the new one for a new Mac. Otherwise, I'll be waiting until I go to college (Fall 2007) to get a MacBook Pro.

CS will run on an Intel Mac with Rosette(?) but by the time I am ready to upgrade (4 years down the road I am thinking) it might as well be the full kitten kabutal Computer, software, everything. Well, not all at once mind you.

Probably when installing windows becomes halfway easy.

I will not use Windows that much but i have a feeling i will need it for my engineering degree when i get into the heavy stuff. D*** AutoCAD and there windows only support. The school requires that is what we use and as soon as i can run AutoCAD (and such) at near native speed on a Mac then i will switch.

I dont want to buy another windows only computer just to run the programs, but i would not mind at all buying a mac and running windows on it to use the few programs i need.

I'm starting to wonder if a company will create an app, or something, that allows you to dual-boot into Mac OS X and then Fast User Switch (or something along those lines) to Windows. Will it be possible?

Speed isn't an issue but the release of a Woodcrest Power Mac or whatever they want to call it is. Bring on Woodcrest and I'll bring on the cash!

What Blizzard needs to do is release a entirely new Diablo! Great game. Also, why the heck is UT2004 STILL UT2004? Why haven't they released anything substantially new?
