i'll switch when my current machine cannot perform well when using the applications to use or have a desire to use, i am guessing that not all applications will be universal in the future.

It's going to take a whole lot more than just power to make me upgrade. Fortunately both of my Powermac's do anything and everything I need. I guess until both my g4 and my g5 gets too slow to run whatever application I need to get the job done, I will definitely not upgrade.

(i hate the idea of intel and mac, i feel like i just got stabbed in the back:mad: ) i guess it'll take some time to get used to, like a bad break up, or a bad drama. "why did you leave the power pc, i thought you were perfect together":(

I'm also concerned about applications not running natively, although it's just a minor setback. I don't think that apple will be forgetting about all of the power pc chip users anytime soon, in fact I know of a production studio local to me still using g3's and early g4's (to do video:eek: )

Basically what you are describing is VirtualPC running natively on an Intel CPU so that it doesn't need to emulate a whole processor just to run Windows. This will make it (almost) as fast as just running Windows by itself on the computer and of course VPC can be activated/hidden etc. like any other app.

Virtual PC for mac on intel will NEVER run at normal speed. If that were the case then Virtual PC for Windows would be just as fast as windows and its not, its a dog.

I'm just waiting for the Intel iMacs to get here...probably in 2-3 months. Then I'll get Adobe Creative Suite and MS Office when they go Universal.

I'm already in for a new iMac, but my PowerBook G4 is still going strong as my primary portable. The MacBooks don't really offer me much more. Not yet as least...

- I'd like the iSight to be optional in an even thinner 15" model (0.66"-0.75" or so would be nice).
- Through some of the massive Apple cash stockpile at the fuel cell problem and see if you can't get a 15 hour laptop battery by the end of 2007. :D
- A BluRay reader would be nice, just so I can keep it for another 2-3 years as BluRay disks slowly become popular.
- 4GB RAM should at least be an option, even if 2GB sticks are outrageously expensive at first.
- The screen should certainly be able to play 1080p at full resolution with no dropped frames and really good brightness.
- I really like the look of the Aluminum PowerBooks, so I don't really want/care if they change it too much further. A darker shade of silver (more gunmetal/graphite) would be nice for the professional line of laptops.
- ADD FIREWIRE 800 AGAIN
- Increase the ExpressCard to the 54mm model from the 34mm currently so any and all ExpressCards that come out can be used.

As for software, I have only a few requests:
- Delicious Library
- ChiefArchitect
- Microsoft Visio
- Pro/E

What will get me to go Intel is a dual-core Merom POWERBook :p and native (Universal) versions of Adobe CS, Final Cut Pro, and Cinema4D. But I really want to see some innovation from Apple in the next full PowerBook rev. The MacBookPro is nice, but there's nothing truly spectacular and new about it. I want...I dunno...hydrogen cel power technology...organic LED screens...multi-gigabit wireless and a way to stream HD video to your television...much faster storage (hard disk or whatever) technology...something exciting and completely new!

UT2004-According to a post at inside mac games, a version is ready, but they are waiting for a intel imac to test before release.

UT2007 and a graphics card in the iMac that can handle it flawlessly. Hopefully we wouldn't have to dual boot to play that game coz I never read anything about a Mac version being planned.

Which means at least after the second quarter this year.

Yes, I know, want to play games, buy a PC. But I would far rather have an iMac do it all.

I'm waiting for the software situation to settle down, which should just about coincide with "rev. B" hardware anyway.

The 1.33Ghz 12" iBook I just bought does everything I need, so I won't get another laptop unless it is substantially better in certain key ways. If one like that were to appear tomorrow, I might wish to get it on account of those vital features, but money is tight at the moment... another reason to get it would be that if I need my current iBook to be serviced, I don't want to be without a laptop for any period of time... so that would be an issue of money. Otherwise, here is what I'd need to buy another lappy from Apple:

1) All things being equal (i.e. not worse feature-wise than the current iBook), if it was 3lb, that alone would make me buy it.

2) All things being equal, if the screen were substantially better (brighter), 13" or bigger without greater weight, and without losing vertical lines compared to the current 12" - this is somewhat subjective (I'd have to see the screen).

3) All other things being equal, the battery life is 10 hours or more compared to todays 5-6 hours.

If at least one of the above 3 points are not fulfilled, then I'll ride this current iBook until the software is no longer supported, or I develop other needs (say desperate need to burn DVDs on the road), or this iBook fails somehow and either AppleCare or Amex Gold warranty can't fix it, or they decide to replace it with a new one (thus it's out of my hands).

The following things would be nice, but without one of the points above, these points below would NOT be enough for me to buy a new Apple lappy:

a) Faster - like, much faster - so that I do not have to suffer through the frequent pinballs
b) 2 firewire and 2 usb
c) BluRay superdrive
d)illuminated keyboard
e)iSight
f)hibernation
g)all apps I use - intel native
h)better speakers and better sound card
i)right-click button on trackpad
j)RAM expandable to 2GB
k)better keyboard
l)better fit and finish on the case - no creaks, cracks, ill-fitting keyboards
m)runs cooler, and I almost never have to hear the fans even under fairly heavy load
n)200GB HDD standard

Obviously points a)-n) probably will apply to the 12" MacBook Pro one day soon, but call me crazy, there's one thing I much prefer in the iBook - yes, I like the casing better on the iBook - guess I'm in a definite minority... I think the aluminum is meh, while the nice white is way superior, plus, very, very important to me, the iBook is much sturdier compared to the current PBs... the aluminum dents way too easily and is too hot (transfers heat too much). For those reasons I'm not crazy about the casing on the PBs and the likely MacBook Pro... I'll prolly continue to stick to the iBook for that reason alone.

Finally, in all honestly, I don't anticipate that any Apple laptops (I won't even consider PCs), will actually compel me to switch to Intel within the next 5 years... when I do switch it'll prolly be for some mundane reason, like my current machine just broke down, it won't be because I'll be wowed by the features, since I don't believe the *to me wow* features I outlined (points 1, 2, or 3) will actually appear in the next 5 years. Of course something totally unexpected might happen, something so cool I just gotta have it :)

Not really sure, to be honest. I just got a Dual 867 Power Mac and I'm very satisfied with it's performance right now and I will soon upgrade it to 2GB of RAM. I doubt it'll be for a long while. Possibly in a year or two?

Time ...

Around the end of the year, a Mini.
Soon after that, a replacement 17" laptop, or maybe a PM (or whatever they will be called by then ... MacMac? Mac Pro?), or maybe both.

Are they going to leave us PowerPC guys in the dust as far as new software and new Operating systems? I am completely satisfied with my Powermac and haven't even thought of getting rid of it as long as I can run new programs and future OSX releases i will be content for quite a few years.

I very seriously doubt it. The biggest majority of the installed base is still running PowerPC and will be for a while, I'd imagine.

What will get me to go Intel?

Pointless question. It's like asking what will get you to go PowerPC 10 years ago.

The inevitable march of time — it's not like you're going to have much of a choice 5-6 years from now if you want to run pro apps on a new machine.

I bought a powerbook last year so I probably won't get a new portable until 2008. My powermac is nearly three years old but I don't really use it that much these days. I might spring for an intel mac mini this year (if there is one) as it'd be useful for testing (and it'd be a company expense and therefore tax deductable ;) ).

Not really intel only, but for me a requirement is VirtualPC or some other equavelent windows environment that does not require me to reboot to use it.

And it must be able to print to my printer (HP Photosmart 3200).

The only thing that will make me switch is the passage of time - I've only just finished maxing out my G4 Powermac so I will be getting a few years out of her before moving on :D
