Ok, love the iphone, dissapointed in a few things with it, ie the lack of Bluetooth and the lack of MMS, oh and 3g is also a loss, due to the lack of a huge EDGE network in south east Uk, so i know that the Iphone 2 will address these problems. Seeing that most of the current iphone owners will want to upgrade as and when it comes out, how will Apple handle this change over, will they insist on buy outs of the exisiting contracts , or will they simply allow existing users to buy a new phone and swap the sim cards, yet new owners will have to sign up to a contract.

Just got me thinking last night as i can definately see a new iphone turning up mid 2008.

I should think you would have to carry on your contract for another 18 months, I doubt it Apple will allow it to be that hard to swap i.e. in itunes just type in your phone number agree to the contract and then press transfer, it will probably take 2 minutes.

Wireless sync via BT may be good, but I use the dock, much easier. in terms of mms, does anyone use that anymore? I just send an e-mail.

To start with, I'll get one when the version 2 comes out. The first run of anything is always a bit 'hit and miss', and it's not until they get it working in the wild that they can really see which bits of the design work and which don't.

there won't be a new iphone until 2009 or so

Do you have some evidence for that thesis?

I think we can expect a new iPhone before Christmas 2008. It seems to me that the iPhone is going to follow the update pattern of iPods and remain at a consistent once per year rate. Since Christmas is probably the most important time to sell iPhones, it only makes sense to update it before then.

okay for the 80th time.

repeat after me.

apple. won't. release. another. iphone. (that being gen 2). until. 2009.

We have contracts! 2 year contracts!

Think smart. The 2nd gen iPhone will probably come out Summer 2009. Around June. Guess what happens then? The people that bought iPhones early..........their contracts will be up. Perfect timing.

Tell me. Who seriously buys a $500 phone every year. Anyone that wanted or cared about the iPhone bought now. Maybe 3% of people are waiting for the second gen.

so you don't think anyone else might possibly buy an iphone? Also, you can get a new phone even if you are in a contract started with a different phone.

That really makes no sense at all. June 07 customers would still buy a new phone in June 09 if one is available. Besides, the largest wave of contracts will not be from June 2007. Christmas (Nov-Dec) of this year will be much bigger in terms of new sign-ups.

In addition to that, Apple really doesn't care when contracts expire. Apple cares more about snagging new customer for the iPhone and increasing the base of users. Christmas is the best time to do this. Ergo, by Christmas 2008, we will have a new iPhone.

Little. It would be a horrible mistake on Apple. Anyone that wanted an iPhone would of bought by now, or planning to buy for the holidays.

Apple stated they want to sell 10,000,000 phones.

Then right away they release a new iPhone?

Bad press for them. Just like the price cut.

Apple will have to release a 3G iPhone for the Asian markets, otherwise it will be laughed off. I expect there will be a iPhone 2 in 2008.

The states have 2 year iPhone contracts, other countries do not. But we all know that Apple cater for the states primarily ( even if its small as only shipping u.s dictionaries only - i.e., in 10.4 ) :-\.

Maybe apple will work out something for existing iPhone owners.

Maybe only 2% of potential customers in the states are waiting for gen 2.... I suspect its a lot higher in more mature cell phone markets such as Europe.

You think Moto waited 2 years before updating the RAZR? Nope. The iPhone will probably be updated in 2008 sometime. Probably at MWSF so they can send it to the FCC for approval.

So anyway, what will happen? Us Apple elite will cough up the what? $150-175 cancellation fee for our iPhones and buy the 2G iPhone. :D :p

And the contract timing is important because? Since you omitted why I'll elaborate. It's important that a new iPhone comes out before the contract expires. That's all that matters. If Apple were to release an iPhone this month November 2007, current AT&T iPhone consumers would simply buy the new one and place it on the AT&T contract to start a new. simple.

The same people who get the new iPod every year :p

You can't compare the RAZR with the iPhone. Apple doesn't make 50 kinds of phones. With the iPhone it has to be something worthy of upgrading to, and thus buying, especially if it's a $400+ phone.

And besides, how many years between the RAZR and RAZR 2?

Contract timing is important.

You guys are forgetting the average user. This is a cell phone.

I'm well off money wise, and even i wouldn't spend another $500 the following year on the phone i have that got updated.

They have to have iPhone 2 be worthy of upgrading.

Are you going to pay another $500 for a phone that has 3G, is maybe skinnier, and what else? There isn't anything revolutionary they could put into a phone within a year.

the razr v3i, successor to the original razr v3, came out about two years after the razr's original release. as for a 2nd generation iphone, at&t customers won't have to cancel their contracts to buy a new iphone. at worst, they'll have to start a new 2-year contract.

I am absolutely convinced that iPhone v2.0 will be out next year in time for the launch in Asia, and will be a worldwide launch.

Why? Because in its current state it's just not remotely up to spec for the Japanese market...

Do you honestly think that they will wait nearly 2yrs to update the iphone? bearing in mind its been out in america for neraly 6 months???? of course they will update it just like when they brought out the ipod it got updated. The iphone will sell in this country but i personally believe that it will not sell like it did in the US for these reasons:

no 3g - which is where we are at in this country, so thats a downer

no mms- again people here like to send picture messages

no bluetooth - so no sync with handsfree.

also people are not used to paying such a high price for phones especially when they are not up to current standards, my friend has a hacked iphone - its impressive but to be honest for £200 quid i could have a ipod touch with everything but the phone app AND I WOULDNT HAVE TO HAVE MY PANTS PULLED DOWN ON A £35 Tarrif that is quite frankly a joke in terms of what you get for the money.

the mac fans and purists will rush out and buy one and if i had money to throw about i would too, but i think the smart money is to wait and see if A) they drop the tariff price to something reasonable
B) they release details of the next iphone.

Apple have been real sly about how they have done things here in the UK they cant loose because they are selling the phone regardless of wether people buy an o2 tariff - in reality i personally think o2 will do themselves harm over this because they have basically mugged off their existing customers by making them pay way more for a lesser tariff and not even subsidising the phone - when you look at it like that why would you buy one???

screw asia they have this :D

and to the above post:

2 of those are software related.

Good excuse to spend another $500 for 3G aye?

I just hope we get some good software updates before they make an ipod 2nd gen. I want my bluetooth file transferring!

While you are correct about the phone not being up to spec for Asia, the unfortunate possibility of iPhone being released in Asia in it's current form seems likely. Why? because its Apple.

I think in the future iPhone revisions will be more frequent as with iPods, but for the initial launch it's going to be closer to late 2008 . Simply because of the partnerships that have to be formed internationally ...its a growing process right now.

Once the iPhone worldwide network of carriers and distribution points settles down a bit I would expect to see more frequent updates. This will also allow each revision to be launched more simultaneously internationally vs the current launch procedure of US..then Europe...then Asia ..etc.

This initial launch is taking an excessive amount of time unfortunately and unfortunately unhealthy for the initial success of the product. By the time iPhone is officially available in the last major market its going to be time for the next new thing.

They dont need to release an iPhone there, they have their cheap meizu knockoff

Apple are concerned about their overall business performance in Japan; they'll see the iPhone as key to regaining some momentum. Let's lay off the cracks about cheap knockoffs; the Japanese phone and internet market is years ahead of the EU and especially the US.

Well we have the iPhone. They don't.

USA and EU - 1 / Asia - 0

I think we'll see the iPhone 2 in 2008, and it will most likely be with AT&T/O2 again, and they'll let you upgrade, as long as you promise to carry on for another 24/18 months. Apple will make it that way, because they know all the people who really want(ed) an iPhone (and there are plenty of us) will be wanting to upgrade asap, and by letting us make more money and ensure their extra profits from contracts keeps coming in. Everyone wins.
