I used to upgrade every year i stopped when the released the iPhone 7 but i tend to upgrade when a worthwhile feature becomes available

For example I kept my iPhone 6s till the iPhone 8 came out which offered wireless charging and fast charging now using an iPhone 12 and that was partly due to wanting a 5G device and more storage than my previous iPhone

Unless the phone stops receiving support for iOS the only upgrade i'll do is replacing the battery.

Except from Touch ID and the processor, everything else is 2016 tech. Big pass!
Arguably the processor is the most important part but yeah, it looks dated. But some people like dated tech like touchID 🤷‍♀️

I got a 13 pro for battery, promotion and cameras. But I’d vastly prefer the size/weight of the mini. I get it, more features require more space. But if they were able to get those specs into a smaller form factor that’d motivate the upgrade from me.

And when you need to restore your iPhone because of an error, a portless iPhone would be very nonsensical. Not to mention you can't use the phone if it's charging wirelessly.
Yeah, case nothing ever happens to the port, and you assume that what happens today will never change… that’s nonsensical.

I will probably upgrade (from SE 2020) once iPhone has switched to USB C. I hope I won’t have to ever buy an apple product again that doesn’t offer USB C.

I upgraded from the 12 Pro Max -> 13 Pro Max due to Apple offering a $800 trade-in credit. I would upgrade to the 14 Pro Max if they offer this trade-in amount again this year.

Here are a few of the other reasons I would consider upgrading:
  • USB C port (finally)
  • Satellite connection
  • Much lighter weight
  • Matte titanium sides
  • Even greater battery life
  • All screen display
  • 1200+ nit display

I generally say goodbye to my phone once the battery starts to become obviously worse. Typically between 2-3 years of use. At that point, I just can’t justify throwing money into a 2-3 year old device that will begin to age quickly at that point forward.

i feel the pro max is too heavy, i can compromise on battery life of 1 hour less screen time on the 13 pro max . but please make it little lighter

I probably should have waited but I just teased in my 12 pro max to Apple and my 13 pro max arrives today. I did this last July as well with the 12 pro max

Selfie camera quality. I make a lot of TikTok content so that's the main camera for me.

Do you have the 13 pro max? Mine arrives today. Upgraded from 12 Max. Big difference in camera?

Honestly? Not a big difference, but its a good front camera! I think the best one for TikTok still, but it can still get better and according to rumours iPhone 14 line will finally do a big front camera update.

I never can be patient enough lol. I’ll probably still trade my new 13 max in for the 14 when it comes out

I’m really feeling we are at peak smartphone. Take my S21. I really don’t see anything in the near future that would make me want to upgrade, especially since I have the 256GB model, so plenty of storage still. And I’m only planning to upgrade my iPhone 7 Plus mainly because Apple dropped it from ios16. Performance used to be a reason, but imo nowadays it’s only edge cases where people upgrade due to performance.

Seeing at lay consumers, most generally tend to upgrade when their battery life is getting too short and/or they’re running out of storage space. Some will upgrade when their phone breaks (regardless of length of time of ownership).

What about you guys? What would be your reason to upgrade to any newer phone from your current one?
There will never be a “peak” smartphone. If anything it will be closer to a “plateau” smartphone but that won’t even happen. Smartphones will constantly get better just at decreasing rates. Increase in smartphone performance is more like an asymptote where it will keep getting closer and closer to perfection but never reach it. Even if we don’t get new features (which we will, we just haven’t thought of them yet), smartphones will keep getting faster with better battery life.

Better storage, better resolution cameras, processor improvements, integrated design, display clarity\sharpness, weight, video capabilities, 120 Hz, - etc.

My will to have the latest tech!

I think you need some sort of addiction and mine is tech-toys. 🤪🤩
And as I don't smoke or drink, I'm totally OK with this.
Same but I really just am into my iPhone and home stuff. Don't really care about tablets and bigger MacBooks are too expensive. I even just get a new PC Laptop once the current one is very slow or broken, and that is rare since I get at least somewhat current when I do get a new one. Video games are the only other thing but I'm more into free stuff. Rarely actually buy a game anymore.

I’ve decided to upgrade every year until I have a phone I love as much as I loved the blue XR.

I honestly loved that phone. It was my perfect phone. Colour. Size. Screen. Everything was amazing.

Kept it two years and only upgraded because I wanted portrait mode for pets. I got the 12 then the 13 and to be honest they’re okay. But I don’t like them as much as I did the XR (I know I could just buy an XR but I’m not downgrading my phone).

I’m going to try the pro max for the first time this year. Just fancy a change.
Yes I totally get what you mean. The XR is my favourite iPhone I’ve had, even though I’ve since upgraded to a 12 and then 13. Can’t quite put my finger on why but I loved it, especially in coral

I am mainly waiting for a phone with better or no PWM. I don’t care of it has an OLED or LCD screen.

Not enthused about the current SE, but if my current iPhone 8 were to die, that is what I would get stuck upgrading too. Hoping something better than the SE comes along before then.
That’s my biggest desire with a new phone, but also I’m getting sick of my iPhone 11 being so slow. My battery is at 77% though and I hear replacing it may improve speed, so maybe I’ll try that if the 14 lineup doesn’t have anything to address the current OLED issues.
