Apple has been known last couple of years of not updating the iPad on a yearly basis. We may not even see a M2 iPad but heck that would be surprising. We know a potential redesign with glass back was rumoured but how does that stand in regard to heat??? Maybe they working on the very issue of heat and that why the redesign. Either way expect a late release/redesign in rergards to all of this. Can’t wait

Would it actually run the GPU full speed without throttling though?
Based on my personal experience I believe throttle Will happen, but not as severe as I thought. Still, frame drop and stutter will occur after playing a while.

I think the issue is that there simply aren't apps that would really tax an M2 chip in a future iPad Pro. At most, maybe it will run stage manager a little more smoothly compared to an M1 iPad?
Apple will find a way to tax iPad Pro without user using demanding apps. They just don’t tax it hard enough.

Here is my overall opinion. I have the M1 iPad Pro…2TB. I only got that large one because that is all they had and I really wanted Stage Manager because I thought it was going to be the problem solver for all my problems with the iPad. Well, it wasn’t. I don’t see how M2 is going to change anything. I still use my iPad Pro the same way I used my last one. I am a pilot so I use a very intensive app while I am flying, but that is about it. Anyway, I really feel like Apple really needs to allow the iPad to run full Mac OS or some kind of variant before I can think of it as “Pro”…at least give us some kind of pro apps…but I don’t know. Maybe I am just being too picky as I don’t think I see my self using it anyway.

I think things like the M2's faster Neural Engine and video encoding blocks will be useful for the iPad.

The extra GPU and CPU power seems like it will be largely wasted either through throttling or a lack of software to take advantage of it.

I know it's unlikely but I rather wish there was an 'M2 Mini' CPU which dropped some GPU cores (down to, say, 6) and otherwise was tuned to be smaller and more power efficient. That could lead to thinner and lighter iPads with still excellent performance.

EDIT - of course the A series chips are already this! I guess I just want an iPad Air that lives up to its name!

The rationale behind any iPad Pro release is that whoever is in the market to buy, that they can buy into the latest version with the fastest chip/ more memory / greater memory bandwidth / or other new features. Irrespective of whether it is “needed” or not, irrespective of whether the software takes advantage of it now.

Most customers don’t upgrade every year - so if they are going to have a device for 4-6 years they deserve to get the most tech for their money.

My hunch is that they're probably going to aesthetically redesign the iPP this year because the performance bump with M2 won't be as big.
Just like how they did with the MBA.

The heaviest parts of the iPad are the glass front, metal back, and the battery. Are you willing to compromise on any of those?
A lower powered chip that allows less battery sounds fine by me.

And I would take a nice non-metal (carbon fibre? magnesium alloy?) back if it got the weight down.

Glass up front seems essential, but perhaps there is some stronger glass that could be made thinner.

Really how Apple does it is Apple's problem, but I think it can be done without much (if any) compromise.

Samsungs Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra cant be bent easily, so Im sure Apple could finally release sturdier iPad Pro in 12.9" size and bigger.
I will value longer battery life over M2 speed, I havent even tapped into power of my M1 iPP, efficiency and durability is where IMHO Apple should put their focus at with rumoured iPP update for, supposedly, this autumn.

Oh and magnesium alloy is metal.

Why would you want a VR headset which doesn't use the iPad AND a screen less iPad?

Because the glass is too heavy. I can’t lift an iPad with both of my arms.

A VR set plugged into the iPad with a M1 / M2 chip allows for a high quality resolution in the VR set with high frame rates.

I think a redesign is in order since they had this current design since 2018… but I honestly don’t see what they can do with it. Perhaps, move the FaceID camera to landscape… that’s about it.

We all know there’s going to be some wireless charging capabilities which will help free up the USB-C port… but a redesign brings different accessories to go along with it.
